Movies have romance. Books have romance. So why not games? Besides, as others have said, it's as good a chance as any to get to know the romanceable characters better - in real life, there's certain sides to people that they'll never show to someone else but the one they love, so...
As long as the romance isn't forced on you I'm more than fine with there being romances in the games Bioware make

It's not just in the signature , I've seen some in the main body it self.

Its just people compensate what they cannot achieve in real life. Its the hard truth... But I'm sorry.
I resent that Shayboy 4. I would be more inclined to believe that people who make asinine comments such as yours are the ones that lack the romance aspect in their life; therefore they feel the need to make assumptions about other people's lives. I am interested in the Romance in the game because I feel a good romance adds more depth to any powerful story. I'll have you know that I have been married 11 years and my husband and I hold more passion and love for each other than a simple-minded fool such as yourself could not even begin to imagine. Next time you make a comment make sure you have things in order in your own romantic life-if you have one-instead of making comments about people you don't even know. Your ignorant comment just shows what a fool you are.

I think it can also give characters some more depth if they hit on your character (to be REJECTED, OOH, BURN), or if your character can hit on them (MORE STINGING REJECTION) etc.... but the fact that EVERYONE seems to fall in love with your character and you can pursue any of them seems... strange. Unless, I suppose to account for the different personalities YOUR warden/Hawke can have and therefore changing which ones s/he identifies best with.
I quite liked lines in DAO that implied flirting - either on the Warden's part, or the companions. For example, Oghren's "you know when you spend time with people... and... things...", you could say "I love you too Oghren". If your Warden is female, he will be flattered (but 'it's too soon, lady... too soon') - and if male, he will be weirded out - and yell about how weirded out he is, too.
Males can also hit on Shale when discovering she is female, just with a "You just look cuter than before... weird..." Shale is unimpressed, but you do have amusing dialogue afterwards at least.

Long and the short of it - it appeals to female gamers (though nothing stopping males enjoying it too, of course). You know, like how romantic comedies are popular among women. Or at least more so than among men.

Makes you care. Makes you love. Brings you in and doesn't let you leave.
I love that these games embrace romances and make them very good quality wise.

He may not have worded that well, but I think there is a kernal of truth to it. From my observation, female gamers place greater emphasis on romance in RPG's.

But in this case I think it might not be as correct as you think--people in general have loved romance for centuries. Think 15th/16th century Europe--literature then was almost exclusively written by men (more specifically rich men, but not the point). And what did they write? Hundreds upon hundreds of sonnets going on about how perfect women are, and oh, how love hurts and makes life crap, and how that perfect lady is just oh so unattainable (I had to read so many of these last semester--stupid stupid Petrarch).
O' course, we've moved into a different medium here with video games, but, though things have been getting more equal lately, men still make up a majority of the demographic. That said, the romances are very popular, and if the majority of the people who experience them are men...I just don't think they make romances just to appeal to the women.
Oh crap, that was longwinded. (This is what happens when you're an English major, bah)

I am certainly not one of those women and yet I am curious to see how romances in DA2 will play out.
But for me there are other reasons.
First, and this has been mentioned before, it is a great tool of characterisation and development, if done right. Also it can make you connect to a character in a different way. - But this has been said before.
For me it is also very interesting from a designer's point of view. I maybe one day will study game design, and I - personally - am curious how a romance can make a player feel and how it lets them connect to the gameworld, what is done right and what is done wrong? How well do different characters work as romance-options? Which are more popular then others?
I love to analyze such things and see what works and what doesn't. So that's my point of view.

I think women are more open about it, but, like I said earlier, men care about it a lot. Morrigan ("WHERE IS MY MORRIKINS") and Liara ("WHERE ARE MY BLUE BABIES") and Tali ("BUILD HOME") should be a good indication of that. The live chat Friday was reeking of people asking where's Morrigan, will we see Morrigan, is Morrigan coming back, will Morrigan be with the Warden, and on and on.
I think guys care just as much. I think they like to pretend they don't.

You pretty much nailed it, a lot of men are insecure and are unwilling to admit even to themselves that they are interested, and many who do are afraid to admit it because they do not want to be rediculed by the insure douches and their tag alongs. Just take a look at the people who post against romances or playing a female character, my money would always be that if they where secure and didnt have an interest in these things they would just leave it be, the insecure ones attack the options.
