Because honestly - though men of course would enjoy these things, how many of them are willing to admit it?

Exactly.

Which is why stereotypes are a bad thing, they reinforce the idea that men shouldn't watch 'girl' things.

And to compound on that very point, marketing works with those stereotypes (they can hardly get to know EVERY SINGLE PERSON that might look at their product after all). Sad, but true - until men step up and admit they like that stuff, it will be few and far between.

Sterotype against sterotype though, in theory the men of Spain and Italy are much more free with this culturally, stepping up and letting the romantics among them be counted. (So is the French, stereotypically, but a holiday in France revealed it to be more the city of Lust than of Love. Ehh. That's sterotypes for you though.)

A lot of these stereotypes are culturally biased, and won't apply to other countries. Since Bioware's fanbase obviously consists of people from all over the world, there'll always be someone who calls out on a generalisation.

To sum up: You put an emphasis on women over men. Men enjoy it just as much. To blanket womens' preferences like that is stereotypical.

Here's something short for you:

If you can't be a***ed to read a comment, don't feel you have the right to pass judgement on it. Especially since you evidently DID NOT READ IT, since you just summarised the OPPOSITE OF WHAT I WAS TRYING TO SAY. Now, can we PLEEEEEASE just get back on topic before this gets locked....?

To point in my comment on this, I really like the romances. I feel the give the characters depth. I am GLAD there are romances in there. It can allow for extra roleplay, in fact, since my character might seem like a god match for this NPC/party member. <3

Or maybe I don't read indignant essays based on a few sentences. You could have been brief.

Yes, but I'm being equally as stereotypical. So, I win. Yay me. Where's my No Prize?

I think the more important thing is whether the general player base cares about romances.

Clearly they do. I feel very much in the minority as someone who loves Bioware games but is apathetic to romances. Its very foreign to me, I feel like the popularity of romances has only become so prevalent since DAO and ME2. My first Bioware game was KOTOR and my second was Jade Empire. Those games had romances and those romances had fans, but there was NOTHING like the romantic infatuation that exists today.

It is a bit concerning. I don't want Bioware's brand to become synonymous with romances. That is too close to the date-simulators, or worse, fetish-simulators, which is, imo, the very low-water mark of the video game industry. Those genres are filth and smut, and while Bioware is NOT anywhere near those low-quality products, the association with date-sims will put them in that category of much crappier and smuttier content.

I fear that if romances have grown in popularity so much in the past 2-3 years, how much more will they continue to grow? Romances are not even a full 5% of DAO or ME2's content. There is way more story and action that make up those games. Yet the fan response to the tiny .01% of romance is so overwhelming.

Part of me trusts Bioware not to create romances that would impede other parts of the game, but 2-3 years ago I also would never have thought romances would become as prevalent as they are today.

It has the official stamp, right? Because I'm sending it back if it doesn't have it's official stamp, with a strongly worded note.

We all play Bioware games for the companion interaction, right? I know I do. I always put Baldur's Gate above Icewind Dale and NWN waaay above Spellforce or Gothic for the sole reason of having a party I can chat with, companions I can hate or love. And if my companions add more to the story - be it by romance or plot importantce - so much the better :wizard:

Indignant....? Interesting. Since you asked so very nicely, here is your Teal Deer summary:

...it appeals to female gamers This is true. It appeals to males too, of course, as allowed with: (though nothing stopping males enjoying it too, of course.)

You know, like how romantic comedies are popular among women. Or at least more so than among men. Fact. I allow for men that like it and women that don't.
  •  romances ARE a major influence
  • not necessarily THE major one - eg: many like being a female character
  • many men are quite the romantics, but
  • they don't normally express this as freely (society has deemed this unmasculine)
  • marketing relies on sterotype
  • Men are allowed to enjoy the romances
  • There ARE dating sims aimed at men though they are not paticularly popular
  • YES, THE MALES ENJOY THE ROMANCES.
Tali, Leliana, Morrigan etc have their appeal (but among females too)

Again - MARKETING

I apologise for any offence, but my opinion is my own. I respect yours.

NOW LET US TAKE A BREAK FOR COOKIES AND FUN TIMES! :wizard: So looking forward to the release date!

I think its a case of each to their own.. poeple that like the romances can enjoy them and in bioware games if you didn't want romances you could say no and viola.. no romance. they aren't being forced on anyone male or female, so in my mind they aren't a huge issue.

yes they have plenty of fans on the net.. but so does every aspect of the game.. I can't stand loghain so i avoid those threads - poeple that find the romance stuff annoying can do the same

Whenever there is a thread with "Female" or "Romance" or "Male" or "Sexy" or any noun / adjective with gender distinction (or require gender), the war between girls vs boys always erupts.

Ever since the days of Harvest Moon, avid interest in romance has existed.

Actually, ever since the days of old stories like The Book of Genesis... but I digress. People like to have their fantasies fulfilled, particularly since real life usually isn't a great place to start. I for one would NEVER go after a cold, jerky, mean spirited person in reality. As a matter of fact, I also wouldn't turn around and BURN DOWN a WHOLE circle of INNOCENT MAGES just for giggles.

Thank god for Videogames and their beautiful, beautiful outlet.

Not sure what all the fighting is about?

anyway Im male and i love the romance part, I get to play a girl AND kiss a girl, what's not to love!?

although my wife did give Leliana a bit of a funny look and wasnt keen that my character usually looked like her!

Guess that must be the Role Playing part of the RPG huh.

I gotta disagree with you on that one. There are plenty of romance movies out there that were huge blockbusters for the boys. James Bond is the first thing I think of. Spiderman. Superman.... The last two Batmans. Action, sure, but most 'boy action movies' almost ALWAYS have a romance central to the story.

I digress.

Romantic subplots appeal to both genders. Not one moreso than another. I just have to stroll over and compare most of the LI threads mostly populated by the ladies with Tali's. Guess whose gonna win in the popularity-among-romances competition?

As a man I can state with complete honesty that no man will ever enjoy a ribbon. As for women, we know they enjoy ribbons thanks to the preponderance of ribbon-enjoying woman in other media. All ribbons are marketed at women. Hence only they can and must enjoy ribbons.

Edit: If you can't tell me and Saibh are having some fun rather than flaming, you need to get your Internet-mood-detector checked out.

Ahh, true enough. Although I had seen James Bond to see a little wayward what with all the women he went through, which didn't seem particularly 'romantic' to me.

But back on topic - why such avid interest indeed? It is the mystery of the ages, that inevitably erupts into torches and pitchforks.
....err....debate.

Still, what I love about Bioware's games is the CHARACTERS (rather than gameplay or story) - games with weak characters just don't have the same appeal. Romance options (or even romance rejections!) add a bit of nice depth there.
