I found a thread on the bioware forums about how to get glass translucent so you could see what was behind it, unfortunately the answer was never posted on the thread.

I've set the alpha channel on the glass to 50% gray, everything else white,  pretty standard stuff.  I'm pretty sure I have the transparency set up in 3ds Max right, but I could be wrong, if someone could put a step by step transparency guide real fast thatd  be cool.

Someone also said that you had to use a vfx in the toolset to get it to work with the alpha but I dont know which one it is.  I've also been messing around with the gray value and haven't had any luck.

So was this issue ever solved? Could use some help :)

Thanks,
Ixion

Did you export the texture to the proper DDS format? Did you try with a TGA file that includes an alpha channel?
Did you set the proper flags on the object? (Alpha test etc)

NWN2 doesnt from what i can tell, do gradual transparency... its either punched out or fully opaque. There is a blog post somewhere about some technique that does allow you some control over actual transparency but I dont think I have it here on this machine.

One other way is to split that mesh into two separate objects so its a multi part object that can be interchanged in the toolset like how weapon parts do (might have to fiddle with some 2das for that since I dont know if torchs are set for multi parts) and have the orb as part number 1. Then assign the item a custom visual effect that has a model effect for alpha transparency. This will only effect part number 1 (the orb, just as such visuals such as partical meshs only effect part 1 on weapons, usually the blade) and should make it transparent, unfortunately i dont think the glow effect with be incorporated, transparency seems to negate any glow effect a model might have in its texture.

Its one of the biggest complaints I have with NWN2 is its lack of transparency. NWN1 had some wierd issues with its transparency, but at least you could get transparency and you could assign it to the model through the textures opacity value in the material editor. NWN2 doesnt.
