I have a windows 7 and a windows vista and they both do the something they play fine when you insteal the game baldurs gate 1 then if I shut down the computer and try to play again you can load it up it plays fine then if you try to save or leave the area it will take you back to the desktop and stop working. If anyone can help that would be great.

Make sure the game has write permissions to all of the game folder. You'd need to check both the read-only attribute of the folder and your own Win7 user permissions.
Also, add the line Logging On=1 under the [Program Options] header in the file baldur.ini* and make the game crash. Provided logging was successfully enabled you should have at least one line of text in your baldur.err file. If you're lucky you'll also have an error message that may be helpful in narrowing down the problem.
*Baldur.ini may be located in the game directory, but it's not altogether unlikely that the file the game is actually using is located among Win7's "compatibility files."

The other thing thanks to UAC (User Access Control) Baldur's gate doesn't get write persmissions to its own folder (so hence can't save). If you installed to the default folder you should uninstall and install to C:\\games\\baldurs gate\\ . Then the program can write to its own folder in Windows 7 and Vista.
