I've been playing the DAO Ultimate Edition off and on with no problems, but recently I started getting frequent lag in about 30-second periods while playing one specific character. The framerate drops ridiculously low and the game is very slow to respond during these periods. I have the settings on max, and rarely had slowdowns except the occasional bit during some cutscenes. I finished the main campaign and imported this character into Witch Hunt and Awakening and the lag continues there as well. I've played other characters under similar conditions and none of them have this issue, just this particular one. My specs are:
2.53GHz Intel Core 2 Duo P8700
6.00 GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M
Windows 7 Ultimate
DirectX 11 (Aug2009) or later
So why is just this one character having this problem? It occurs so often that it nearly renders the game unplayable.

Okay... first, brace yourself, because there are many people here who might roll their proverbial eyes at the idea of playing on a laptop. There is some reason for this... overheating being the chief issue. Laptops get HOT. So that's something to consider. I'm just saying....
If this was a long-standing problem, I'd suggest making sure you have the latest drivers. It wouldn't hurt to make sure they're up to date anyway... 266.58 is the newest one, and according to the Nvidia.com site, it supports your mobile GPU.
An obvious test is to lower your graphics settings, both in game and in the Nvidia Control Panel, and see if the frame rates improve. Or for that matter, drop the resoulution down.
Why is it happening now? With just one character. That's the key, as you pointed out above. Let me ask this... have you installed any 3rd party mods since creating that character? Or is that character someone who has a lot of power-ups with special effects (like a mage, arcane warrior, something like that)?
EDIT: Further thought... could it not be the character but rather that you installed some other application that's running in the background since creating the character? You may want to check your pagefile size...there are some links in the thread that is linked to my sig.

I cleared the pagefile, and still no go. And yes, my character is a mage, with a lot of buffs active. The thing is, the slowdown occurs no matter what buffs I have active, what resolution it's set at, etc. I tried lowering the settings and that didn't work either. I'm currently downloading the latest drivers for my GPU, so hopefully that may fix it.

Once you get the new drivers installed, if there are still issues, you may want to double check and make sure the Nvidia Control Panel is set for "Let the 3D application decide" under "Adjust image settings with preview".
Good luck!

I'd agree with Raen... Laptops after a while tend to run a bit slower after they get hot and if your playing one character more then others you might notice it then.
Also you might be having anti-virus or another program running in the back-round and it's just happening at the same time as you playing the one character, being a coincidence.
Also updating drivers, Windows, probably won't fix it, but can't hurt and if none of this solves it then turning down your graphics card might be in order.
In my opinion, I'm surprise that your running on max everythying with a mid-range 200 series laptop card, etc.

It's definitely not a heat problem. I've played for a few hours on different characters, all with no problem. However, I load up my mage after booting up and within minutes I'm getting hit with the lag.

Again, any mods in your game?
Also, consider lowering your desktop resolution as well as the game resolution. Let's see if that helps performance. If you need to chart system performance, GPU-Z is a great way to monitor graphics card temps (things may have not overheated before because you weren't a mage before) and FRAP is a great frame rate tracker. Both can be found with a Google search.
And finally, if you really want to test it, turn everything down to minimum. 800x600 res, lowest texture settings, no vertical sync, nada. Nvidia Controls set to "Let the 3D application decide". See if there's any performance improvement.

Are you running a lot of sustainables with your mage? I find that mage sustainables use a lot of Visual Effects and having them turned on can slow things to a crawl.
Arcane Shield, Combat Magic and others that create shimmers, transparencies and other effects like that will create lagging. Which is why I rarely play a mage, and when I do, I only use a few sustainables.

I feel like I ought to point out something - Dragon Age Origins has a memory leak. Long load when first booted up, then short loads after.... but as you play, the loading takes progressively longer... and lonnger... and loooooonnnggger. Just save, exit, and restart if you think that might be your problem.
If push comes to shove, drop down your graphics settings to Low.

I've read about the memory leak, and DAO isn't the first game that suffered from that. Firefox was known for it, as well. Like Kars said, exiting and restarting the app or game would usually fix it, for a while....
I'm gonna take Raen's suggestions and see how the game runs then. To answer the question, though, no, I have no mods installed. I wasn't even aware that any had been released, until now.

Actually, I've been having this problem too. I've been running the game on my pc for a year and never had problems. Now I decide to play a mage, and when I entered the alienage orphenage I got hit with a massive drop in framerate.
Now, I will say this; it's the first character I've played since installing Witch Hunt and the latest patch.
Right now though, I'll try updating my drivers.

I updated my drivers, and dropped the quality and resolution to the lowest, disabled all frame-buffer and antialiasing, etc, and lowered my desktop resolution to the lowest setting as well. The game runs great, looks somewhat decent, but no slowdown. I raised the resolution, played for a while, then raised the detail, played for a while, and so forth. Seems to be running fine for the time being. There is some frame rate drop with a lot of sustained abilities running, but that has been normal. So far it seems to be running fine again. I'll continue playing and report how things are going in the next day or so.

Well, updating drivers didn't help, BUT...
I recently replaced my dvd drive, and Future Shop went and installed a whole bunch of needless crap from the software disk that came with the new drive that has been running in the background all this time. Now that I uninstalled half of it, the game runs fine.

Turns out it was an overheating issue. The exhaust vents on my laptop were clogged with dust and pet hair. Once I cleaned it out the fans and heatsinks worked fine, and the game ran great once again.
