It could be normal, yes. There are many variables.
Who's with you? What side quests have you done? What gear do you have? Do you actually have any experience with D&D?
Your actual build is probably not the problem. Pure fighters can do just fine. Unless you really screwed up somewhere (you don't have INT > 20, do you?)

well, i have khelgar, neshka and qara..the best equips i can find at lvl 6. which includes astral blade +1, and doom mace. heavy crossbow. i let the ai lvl up my companions. i have done all side quests up to here. its just when i get jumped by 5 thugs they tear down my two fighters and then obviously slaughter my mage and rogue...i played nwn1 quite a bit...

(1) Elanee is probably the best NPC in the game, definitely at your current point, and definitely the most versatile. You need her. Probably toss out Neeshka (though I would send Khelgar packing with a Fighter PC, but you're new). You need to give Elanee at least one Healing spell of each level, plus some of the damage spells, restoration, barkskin, etc. And turn off her Polymorphing - she's really not any help as a bear.
(2) If you think the Astral Blade +1 is the best weapon available to you, I think you've missed a few things. Step out the gate of Neverwinter and look at the Travel Map closely. Maybe there's an area you overlooked. Also, in Neverwinter itself, you may want to have Neeshka use some of the skills she hardly ever uses. You may also want to ask in the Temple of Tyr if they have a job opening.
(3) Buy all the good Healing Kits you can get and make sure everyone has them, especially Qara. You can also buy unlimited +1 HKs at Highcliff, so you should get a few stacks.
(4) You may have to wait a bit, but when Qara next levels, give her some defensive spells. Stoneskin comes immediately to mind.
