im used to playing as the basic sword and shield...i want something new but im not familiar hehe with anything else thats worth while...and wont get masacred

Spellcaster, Melee or Archer?
If Melee:

Generally speaking, you want to use Fighter to get to a prestige class or for multiclassing. So you might want to look and see if one of those options appeals to you. If nothing else, it might give you an idea of the different combat styles you can choose from, even if you don't want to actually pursue the related prestige class.

Not necessarily. There is also Paladin, Ranger, Barbarian and Swashbuckler to look at for melee-style base classes.
