Mage NPCs Lacking?

My personal problem is a personnel one. Id like to take a Mage, but neither Wynne or Morrigan appeal to me. As I don't want my character to be a Mage I am stuck. I miss the option of someone not being a ****y Witch or Tutoring Aunt.
Like.. An average Mage. Like Wilhelm from the book. The typical "boom here it goes" mage option is kinda absent. Someone more neutral then the Peoplehating Witch or "Goodytwoshoes" Wynne. At least thats how they seem to me so far. Only listening to the Wynne trailer made me annoyed at her (Reminds me of blathering Jaheira of BG2) And morrigan... I dont know, i just dont find the whole "people suck and only POWER is importantl" thing appealing at all. She is not someone I´d like to have around.
Thats why I always like to have the option to create more then only my main char. Ah well I will somehow manage. But I still hold out a tiny bit of hope there is another NPC Mage hidden. /rant

Only Communists dislike characters voiced by Claudia Black.

I bet you can beat the game without using a mage.
I bet you can beat it without a tank/warrior. But there is 5 options for that place (at least).

Don't assume these characters have one layer to them, little snippets of conversations aren't going to tell you who they are.
EDIT: Wrong, There are two Warriors, a War Dog, and a Golem. Dog and Shale don't have 'warrior' abilities, just because Dog takes hits doesn't make him a warrior. They are 'warrior-like' but they both have special abilities that make them different.

When I say normal I don't mean boring, or one dimensional but rather someone I can identify with. Someone I would like to have around at the camp fire, someone with an interesting character. I Liked Edwin!
Also Dog and Shale count as warriors, I am talking function not "class".

While that might be the case, they have the same role as a warrior. As far as we know, you can’t use Dog to open chests, and you can’t use Shale to heal or deal massive AOE damage.
Now, if you want a difficult game, you can ignore class roles entirely, but we already know that at normal difficulty the game is hard. If you don’t have a balanced party, you’ll probably be hurting. Not taking Wynne or Morrigan is possible, but will likely involve a great deal of dying.

First, you have not played the game, so you cannot truly tell if the characters you refer to will really annoy you in the end. Maybe both will surprise you?
Second, how much do you gain from complaining about existing companions? Certainly you will not gain a fully voiced and great mage-character to your liking just out of the blue.
Third... there is a toolset. If you are not fully happy with a companion go on and try to create your own. Gets you a lot of practice and characterization, writing and scripting.
Fourth: If both really will annoy you that much you can always play your game without a mage. Noone ever set up a rule about mages being required in your party.

I don't think you'll find a mage that just likes being a mage, due to how magic works in DA:O. It's not a lifestyle you choose to follow (in a sorcerer's case I guess it's closer, being born with innate magical abilities), and magic isn't taboo in D&D. In DA:O it is dangerous, not only that, if you're born with the 'magic gene' you get taken away from your family, shut into a tower, being constantly told you could be killed at any moment, if the Templars consider you dangerous, and that you are possibly going to kill everyone you know simply because you are a mage and you could be possessed. It's hard to be excited about learning about magic with that looming over your head.
Morrigan is probably the closest to Edwin, she enjoys power, and likes insulting people.

Oh right. I still have flu-brain.
@ Maria: Yes, that's a perfectly good point, I was just making it clear they don't actually have the same abilities.

She is more like Edwina though, a bitter bitter woman.
