Origins Ultimate Edition now completely freezing my computer every time

Hi.  I've been to Bioware's tech support chat six times and I'm starting to get desperate.  I'm writing this because I hope someone else can help my with the tech problems I'm having with Dragon Age Origins Ultimate Edition for PC.  I'm unsing an Asus G73J with Windows 7.
So the game was working wonderfully for me, I managed to play about 20 or so hours with no problems or indications of future problems whatsoever.  Then I decided to play with the sound options and checked the button that is listed 'force stereo'.  (Turns out the headphones I was using weren't even stereo, but that's not important.)  The game told me I needed to restart so changes could take effect.  When I restarted the little mini menu came up and when I clicked play, it completely froze.  There was also a horrible buzzing noise.  Alt-tab, ctrl-alt-delete, nothing would work except for manually powering down.  I tried a few more times and the same thing happened every time I hit play.  Then I tried some of the other buttons on the little menu.  The configure option also cause my computer to lock up.  After some experimentation I realized every button caused the computer to freeze.
I started contacting the online tech support chat people from bioware's official site.  The first few times they suggested loading up with a different windows service pack setting and administrator privledges.  That didn't help.  Then they had me update my sound and graphics card drivers.  That didn't help.  Then they had me try without the firewall and with my antivirus off.  That didn't work either.  They had me delete all temp files and close all other processes from the program manager.  That didn't work.  Finally they suggested trying to uninstall and reinstall the game.
I was able to uninstall.  When I tried to reinstall with the disks the little menu first popped up with the install option.  When I clicked install it froze.  If I allowed the menu to come up and chose to exit, it froze.  Again, any other option from the menu also caused the computer to completely freeze.
Then tech support chat told me to try to install without the disks.  I copied all the files from DVD one to my machine in a folder.  The first time it started installing but asked for disk two and wouldn't complete.  The next time I copied all the files from both into the same folder.  The installation was successful.  When I started it up I got to the first menu and hit 'play'.  The the Dragon Age Origins: Configuration Utility came up and the computer froze immediately, this time before I hit any buttons.  I've tried again a few times and it keeps freezing at this point. It gets to the little screen and begins to scan my computer to select settings.  I'm doing this with firewall and antivirus off.   Each time, it completely locks everything up and Ctrl-alt-delete doesn't help.
Aside from Dragon Age, there have been no other freezes on my machine.  Starcraft 2, Fallout, everything else is still working.  Yet I can't understand how Dragon Age could even be doing this before the game is installed.  How can it cause a freeze before the information is there and how come there's no problems with any other game?  Also why did this start the time I clicked that button in the sound menu.  I have no answers, but I do miss playing Dragon Age Origins.

You problem is very complex and, of course, you understand your computer best.  So let's start by saying this:  there's a lot of knowledge on this forum, more than a year's worth.  So I encourage you to search around.  The actual search function on the site is quite bad, so consider using Google.  Type in site:social.bioware.com your search terms

Now, people here will be happy to troubleshoot, but you'll need to provide more system information than a model number.  It doesn't mean anything to me, for example, other than the fact that it's a so-called "gaming laptop."

I will go ahead an offer one theory right now... Core i7 laptops, for example, do not have true Core i7 CPUs.  They're mobile versions which have a relatively low clock speed.  They compensate by something called "Turbo Boost", which is suppose to generate the equivalent of almost twice the clock speed.  Problem is, Dragon Age is actually an old, clunky program... it was developed over something like five years and is VERY CPU intensive.  It also does not tolerate overclocking... which is kinda what Turbo Boost is, if I understand it correctly.

I am sure there are many other factors involved, but that's my first guess based on what you provided.  Again, I encourage you to search the site, and if you still need help, post specifics.  The first few sticky posts on the forum page will guide you.

Best,

RI

EDIT:  Beyond system performance, if you're having installation problems, I suppose it could be a problem with your discs.  You can use the EA Download Manager program to download a (very large) digital copy of the game.  Go to the main EA site and you'll find more about that, or, again, search these forums.

Silly question: where did you play around with the sound options?

To OBakaSama: In the game itself (not from the mini menu option that first comes up with autoplay.)

To RaenImrahl: I do have an i7, and I'm sure the 'newness' of my computer could have something to do with it. The confusing part is that it ran for so many hours without any crash and now crashes no matter what. Installing without the disks did help me to get further, but now it crashes again upon hitting play at the Configuration Utility that determines initial settings and comes up because it thinks I'm 'starting for the first time'

See if you can disable the Turbo boost function on your CPU for the game... there has to be some way to configure it. And of course in Win 7 it's important that you are using an admin account. You may want to consider turning off the UAC stuff, too.

Also, do not discount the possibility of overheating. Play with the laptop plugged in to AC power and monitor your system temps. An online search will help you find free software, like GPU-Z or speedfan which can assist.

@King: Did you ever find a solution for this that worked? We have the same exact computer, same exact problem.

One of the OP Author's component suppliers was ASUS, whose hardware is excellent, while their software in a real pain in the rear.  If either of you accepted the "Gamer OSD" software install, you should uninstall it now.  The same goes for an Asus program with the word "Doctor" in it.

Hey not sure if any of you have had success with the above issue but I experience the same exact symptoms and it ended up being related to my sound card. Try going to the 'speakers' properties / Sound Blaster Tab / check 'disable enhancements'.

@Avayla, no I never found a solution.  It's oddly comforting to know that I'm not the only one in the world with this issue though.
@Gorath.  I hadn't updated software before, but on the EA help chat they told me to update all drivers and everything.  That's when I might have accepted any updates Asus recommended.  I'll double check for those things.  Thanks for the info.
@Swedishmoose, I'm going to try this now.  If it helps I'll post back here immediately.  If not, I'm still up for suggestions.

Swedishmouse, that did something. It booted up for the first time since I first hit "force stereo". Haven't actually gone into the game yet (since I have to install the content before I can get back to my save) but it definitely helped get me farther and is something Avayla and other should try too.

Thanks so much! I ended up bypassing the autoloader completely and went into the bioware folder, clicked on dragonageorigins.exe and it started right up. Honestly, after trying everything else in the book, from defrag, virus checks, overclocking, key registries, etc, I kinda felt really stupid lol. I think the computer just did not like the autoloader. That was my solution anyway. Thanks for the suggestions! Hope this helps someone!

Havana - I haven't had any problems running DAO since making that change. I had originally tampered with the sound card settings in an effort to disable my mic that was having some serious echoing issues... I think I might have set the 'realtek digital output' as the default device in 'sounds/playback tab' - not having any external speakers connected maybe caused it to freak out? lol. Anyway, hope it works 4 u.

i dont know what to tell you but i had a similar issue with my anitivirus. i was using gdata
you are gonna have to config doa in safe mode back to your old settings. also bring up task manager and make sure ur antvirus is off completely. one easy way is to just delete your config save ur saves in a foldersomehwere safe. like on your desktop. they can be located in your docs.
