Hi, this might seem like a dumb question but long story short is that i never played Dragon Age Origins, and its several DLC and I'm wondering if I should pick up the Ultimate Edition first and then play Dragon Age II? I'm pretty much just asking if anyone knows how big a loss I'm at if I start playing at DA: II. Just like how big an impact it will have on the world if I don't import from DA:O or maybe how much lore I'm missing?

It would be great if someone could answer and sorry if I posted this in the wrong section, it just seemed like the correct place to ask. Thank you for your time.

You play as a different character in DA2, so it's not really important. However you do import your Origins save in DA2, so your choices in Origins will have an effect in DA2.

But, why wouldn't you play Origins? It's not really old, it's cheaper and it's much longer than DA2. Unless you really hate an unvoiced protagonist, Origins is probably twice the game DA2 will be, in both quality and quantity.

DA2 is not a remake of Origins, it's a completely different different story. It's like saying "I'll never play GTA4 I'll just wait for GTA5", or saying "I'll never watch the LOTR trilogy, I'll just watch the Hobbit"

I don't think you will miss that much to be honest. I believe Mike (I think it was Mike) said a while ago that people who played Origins/Awakening and DLC will understand some things quicker and won't need an introduction to certain things (for example there is creature the Harvester which makes an appearance and it was also in one of the DA:O DLC).

Besides that Origins is just a great game and if you are into this genre you should buy it just because you want to play it, don't buy it for the sake of import files alone. :)

Well, we don't really know how much it will affect DA 2. Bioware told us that you can still pick up Mass Effect 2 without playing the first one, but having played the first one and then attempted the 'default setting' of Mass Effect 2, I was left really unsatisfied with the default choices that were made for me.

You might not care if you haven't played the first one first, but may have to accept that some decisions would be made for you that you wouldn't like had you played the first game.

Personally, I would prefer playing the game knowing that 100% of my decisions were made by me as the story is then made that much more personal.

"Improvements" like no races, no origins, shorter length, no armor for party members etc ?

Origins is a great game and a lot of the decisions you'll make there will have an effect on the world in Dragon Age 2. that said you don't NEED to play it to enjoy DA2. There are three preset "histories" in DA2 for you to choose from. I'm sure the story will be accessible for new players. Try the demo on the 22nd!

Lore wise I think you'll be okay. There'll probably still be a codex that gives you all the deeper background stuff and if there won't be one for some reason, then you can read up on everything on the Dragon Age wiki. But I wouldn't worry; the DA setting is pretty accessible. There are some fantasy'esque terms that might confuse you at first, but you'll catch their meaning pretty fast.

As for the impact if you don't import a save. We don't know the full impact yet, but I'm guessing it will be similar to ME2 in that if you don't do a import the game will default to certain options and cameos from the DA:O won't appear.

Actually, I feel that gameplay wise, you won't miss out by much. But lore, you will miss out quite a lot. Plus, having experienced DA:O, you will come to love the DA universe even more.

Thanks for everyone's reply. I think I will pick it up, it was really just a question if I should play DA2 first or DA:O. So I think I'll hold out a bit on DA2 and beat DA:O first. Once again thank you for all the replies.

Okay, here is most of what you need to know.

Humans are the dominant race in the world and control most of the land and kingdoms.

Dwarfs mostly live underground beneath mountains in stone cities.

Elves are a lithe, pointy eared people who excel at poverty.

Darkspawn are like demons. They are very evil and want to kill you.

The Maker is God. So instead of "thank god" you hear "thank the Maker!"

The Grey Wardens are like the Jedi. They protect everyone from the Darkspawn with cool armor and swords.

That's probably all you'll need to know

how bout it having an actual art style now instead ofn instead of smudgy browns and greys and greens, and the combat systems better  ( the consoles actually have one) having watched the demo I'm very pleased w/ what I'm seeing, and I do call those improvements.
As for no races umm yeah there are diferent races in the game if you havent noticed.
No Origins, that was cool the first 6 times I played them, but now we have a more focused story.
And if you watched the live demo chat you would know you can buy different outfits as well as unlock them over time for your party members.
And as for the length we havent played it yet so just because its not 70 hours long doesnt mean its not  good.

You got a bit less than a month to get it done so that should be plenty of time to finish the game.

If you've still not completed it by DA 2's release, it still might be worth pre-ordering if you have the cash to spare even if you don't play straight away. Everyone gets the Lion of Orlais shield and the Fadeshear sword ( sword levels up with your character) as pre-order. Everyone gets the Black Emporium for buying it new.

Granted, they're minor things, but some people are bothered about extra items. *shrugs*

The main character of dragon age 2 is completely different buddy. You can only import your decisions from origins to da2.

^Its a completely new PC in this game. You just have some of the decisions/choices made by the last PC reflected in this game. When the next game comes around it will be another new PC.

Not really, but 3 will read your 2 file which contains your 1 file when you import, so you may need your Origins choices later on.
