There is actually an amazing f!Brosca/Zevran fic flying about, and f!Tabris/Zevran. m!Surana/Zevran too. Never went to the Alistair part of fandom since I dislike the character.

I agree on the Mary Sue bit, but I also like reading about an interesting OC (a damaged rogue Brosca or a scarred, socially inept Tabris sword-and-board warrior - both of the OCs of the fanfics I mentioned are prertty awesome). For some reason I got less Mary Sues when I read slash fanfic >_> Might be a coincidence, and I certainly will be writing some fHawke/Isabela and Hawke/Fenris... Not sure which gender for Fenris >_>

haha love the incest warning

So, this might only make sense in my head, could we have rivalry-romances?

Yep, and some romances might lend themselves better to rivalry than friendship, or vice versa.
EDIT: Ack, beaten to it.

I wonder if some of the romances only are available in one direction or the other, or if you get a different one depending on which one you pick.

It would make sense for Anders to be a rivalary only romance if the only way for him to exorcise Vengence is if you challenge him not to give into his anger at the Chantry.

Or for Merill to be friendship only, I think that one is the most likely to be restricted. I'm most interested if the different rivalry/friendship paths actually lead to different conclusions... like if you have a rivalry romance with Fenris you guys go your seperate ways at the end, but if it's friendship, then it's a happy ending for you two? Things like that.

Edited cause I can't read properly.

They did make it sound like picking a side, friendship/rivalry and sticking to it is important. I do hope you're right and they make it a different thing depending on what you pick. Not that I won't be replaying the game more than enough times to see it all, but still.

Hm...depends on how well it's done I guess. Though that would be interesting.

I dunno... I saw DG say that the friendly/rivalry romances are two different paths to the same place. Although I suppose there's a chance certain choices you make in the game could cause a 'separate ways' ending.

Good enough for me. I'd hate to lose out because I chose the 'wrong' end of the meter.

What do you think the rivalry path will be like, by the way, for the LIs?

Anders' is pretty obvious, but the others. I just... don't know >_>

Merill - maybe not letting her explore forbidden magic or just speaking out about it? She has more utilitarian thoughts on magic, I think.

Isabela? The only thing I saw her object is slavery, and it is a hot-button issue in Kirkwall... Don't see Hawke siding with slavers though, so maybe if you go the law&order route, just because she doesn't enjoy being caged?

Fenris' is probably something about his "I will kill anyone who tries to come after me" thing, but then again, how do you object to that?

Thoughts?

I'm actually more curious as to how the whole rivalry/friendship mechanic will work. I mean, I'd say "approval" like there was in DA:O seems very different from "rivalry" as an idea. I'm curious if the game just looks at specific key decisions and affects friendship/rivalry accordingly... like it's assumed everyone is your friend, but if you killed Conor, Alistair would be sent towards rivalry even if he loved you kind of thing... If it's done by just base approval rather than looking at key plot decisions to determine friendship/rivalry, I think that it may result in most people going the friendship route for all characters except the ones they hate... so rivalry romance might be pretty rare. I hope it's by plot decisions, and not, say, being ****y to them in private convos.

So, I think that the rivalry/friendship will probably be determined by your character alignment. A renegade hawke would be friendship with Isabela and Anders, a paragade would be friendship with Fenris and Isabela, and a paragon would be friendship with Merill.

I also remember a developer saying something like for rivalry, once it hits a certain point there will be a "standoff" which can cause the person to leave the party. So, I'm pretty sure all rivalry romances can potentially have a bad end in that regard.

I am so hoping that a rivalry romance will feel a lot different than a friendship romance. That way, I can re-roll plenty of times to try out romancing the same characters but with different approval ratings.

I'm pretty sure it does base itself on plot decisions, because Mike Laidlaw said that they might come up to you and be like "I know we haven't agreed on a lot of things but I need you to support me on this"

He kinda elaborated on it, but like all those darn developers, he's still very secretive. Evil, evil devs.

Side note: off topic question, but we've gone off topic so many times before it doesn't matter anymore. Why didn't the devs ever make a patch to fix the Jowan's intention bug? Were they not able to fix that or something?

Yeah, that makes sense for the rivalry thing. What was the bug you're talking about? Maybe I haven't run into it...
EDIT: Looked it up, I never ran into it because I never told him to run away! Yeah, that is really bizarre that it hasn't been fixed but.... DA:O is actually pretty buggy on the whole, IMHO. They still haven't fixed that "Ancient Elven Boots" not appearing in the closet in Lothering's Chantry on PC version either.

If you told Jowan to just get the hell out of Redcliffe, a Chanter's board quest called Jowan's intention opens up, but on all 3 systems it's bugged so that you can never complete. A PC workaround was made, but I have the PS3 version and I'm going to do another Mage story, this time a female one, and release him so I know he's alive (yes I care that much about a video game character), so I just wanted to know why the devs never fixed that

all the more reason I wish they had done a DLC that reboots the conscripting thing. Jowan would've made a really good Grey Warden.

EDIT: need a cover to make it seem like I'm on topic. uhhh..... uh... Isabella is awesome. Actually, yea she is. I like how she's not taking **** from anyone in this game.

I actually agree -- I really liked Jowan's character. I was kind of sad my flirtations on my f!mage couldn't go anywhere with him. I hope he shows up in DA2.

If not DA2, then DA3 just due to the whole Jowan's intention bug and that really messing people up. The Jowan fanbase is pretty large, and people really liked the idea of a Blood Mage Grey Warden. It would go over pretty well with him as a companion you meet. Maybe he starts a Refugee settlement somewhere, and they become threatened, and in order to protect them he joins your cause.

I'll agree he was annoying a lot of the time, but wanting to genuinely make up for his mistakes? Not fighting the idea of sending him into the Fade? Protecting refugees? That makes him pretty mature imho. He only trusted Loghain because the teyrn was a hero, and most likely he hadn't heard anything bad about Ostagar regarding the Teyrn.
