All four optional companions (Merrill, Anders ,Isabela and Fenris) can apparently be recruited early into act one. But none of them seems forced into the party like the other three (Sibling, Aveline and Varic). And Anders having the map makes him as important as Wynne or Zevran were in DA:O. You must meet him to progress the story but there is no need for him to join the group or even survive the encounter, after all you can take the map from his corpse as well. The same is true for Merrill. Though it does seem that both Anders and Merrill must be met to progress the plot even if you can refuse them to join your team, while Isabella and Fenris only show up if you take the associated side missions. So I would say Anders and Merrill are straight and Isabela and Fenris are bi, if we follow the theory that the bi companions are more easily avoided.
Hawke (supposedly this all is) need Merrill for Flemeth's ritual. So yes she would need to be in the party when Hawke goes to preform it. Maybe it unlocks something important (supposedly it has a significant impact), Anders wouldn't be easily killed and attacking him would probably do more harm than good. [Wynne didn't do
anything for you other than be a party member everything she had on her/told you were things you could've learne from someone else, Zevran had no significance at all in the plot other than letting you know Loghain was after you *which you would've figured out in Lothering or Orzammar or even Denerim]. Also Anders
was a grey warden which would make him extremely useful for when you venture in the deep roads.
Killing Wynne, Zevran or Leliana made practically no difference on the main plot. Meanwhile how you treated Alistair/Morrigan had a much larger difference.
