Why would whether they're optional companions or not be related to whether they're bi or not? Just because that's how it worked in Origins? Is there some idea that they don't want to be controversial by forcing a bisexual character into your party? Couldn't that logic also apply to make one question why they've promoted Isabela as the leading lady as opposed to the traditional uncontroversial straight romance?
Well, their argument (which apparently got an aggressive-toned response from Ms. Hepler) was that Isabela is completely optional. Regardless of how she's been marketed, you can still do the game without ever meeting her. So, she must be the bi option! Because, they've already noticed a pattern. After one game.
It was the fact that you met her second that was the pattern.
And it was after four games. KOTOR, Jade Empire, Dragon Age Origins, Mass Effect (and an arguement could be made for ME2).
Well, going back to look at Hepler's red-fist post, it looks like that was the line of thinking before she made her post. I'm more referring to the line of thinking adopted immediately after, with Shepard talking about Morrigan and Alistair being required and Leliana and Zevran being optional.
