The problem to some people is the big flashing heart shaped switch-o-romance which switches on/off a part of NPCs personality - minor part but also an important part. Some players don't like being the ones to decide something vital like that through a game mechanic rather than gameplay.

That's the thing, though... for the characters who are "switched around" depending on whether or not you flirt with them, that isn't an important part of their personalities.

There were a few prretty crazy homophobes, like the one that came on a while ago screeching about how much he hated 'homos' and constantly reassuring us that he's straight and whatnot. Not to mention the people whose concerns were less about characterization and more about "omg i'm a striaght guy i don't want another guy hitting on me if they do i'll kill them". That might have been what falconlord5 was referring to.

It would be pretty annoying if everyone in your party was hitting on you, but I gather from the dev comments and what we've seen of the videos that that's Isabela and Anders' job and that Fenris and Merrill are more low-key.

Like I said, the comment wasn't directed at falcon specifically, and the people you mentioned (bolded) just strike me as trolls who only post comments like that to 'get a rise' out of people.

There were some people who were just genuinely concerned about characterization being labeled as 'homophobic', and THAT'S what irked me.

;)

Yeah, after a while Zevran started to irritate.

But I'm reasonably certain that you can shut these guys down. With Zev, you couldn't.

Oh, I won't doubt that it would be annoying. But these people were assuming that bisexual = perv who hits on everything with legs, and that all the companions would be so bold even though we know Merrill and Fenris aren't the type. They then proceeded to talk about violently killing every same-sex character who hits on them. Seemed like a case of some serious insecurity to me.

But then the writer could have made them all bi and integrated it into their personal stories (like they did for Zevran Isabela and Anderas) instead of "click this" and they they are as the player wants them to be in this playthrough. Mind you, I am still speculating here as I haven't played the game yet but if the heart really is a "switch" then it's not something I can get around. I metagame, I know it's a switch for any gender and therefore I won't use it.

I had no issues getting Zev to stop hitting on my Warden, but everyone else seems to. Then again, maybe it was because all my Wardens have been male so far (I've heard he's a bit more...ambitious with the females?) and because there's only been one where I didn't romance him. So my experiences here are probably a little skewed :P

Well, very imperious of you.

Regardless, by "straight romance" I mean, romance story line with a straight LI.  And it's a matter of opinion and taste whether that being unavailable is a good thing or a bad thing.  Personally I would prefer at least one straight romance story line, because I cannot relate to the bisexual point of view.  If you can, that's fine for you- don't tell me how I should feel about it.  It's not that big a deal, however.  I enjoyed Zevran's romance story line in Origins and I'll wait to see how the romances are implemented to judge those in DA2.

This wasn't supposed to be a personal attack on you.  I was talking more about the people that have been openly and unapologetically homophobic.  I guess my problem with people saying they wouldn't  want to be with someone because they are attracted to both sexes seems closed-minded to me.  That being said, I can understand that not everyone thinks the way I do.  Evidently there is a straight romance option though if you count Sebastian, but he is a little celibate for my tastes.  All in all, I hope that it won't make such a big difference to you.  But if you enjoyed Zevran's romance, it probably won't be a huge issue :)

Well, and that's up to you. As Addai pointed out, someone is always gonna be (or feel, anyway) left out, and there really isn't a whole lot BioWare can do about it. Gonna step on somebody's toes.

However, as you say, your just speculating. We all are. Something in my guts tells me it isn't a switch, that there will be a character based reason for it.

Could be wrong. But I got this feelin'...

But the writers didn't want to write them all as bisexual. They wanted Merrill and Fenris to be straight or gay. I understand that you don't like having that much control over NPCs, but most people don't mind. Some people don't like the star ratings for equipment, but most people don't mind. Just play the game. You're not going to like every single thing, but I hope you like enough of it to derive some satisfaction from it :)

[EDIT] Oh my god, I sound like a dev. BioWare, make this happen. I'll fax you my resumé in the morning.

Caliban? That explains much :D.

And charming, clearly, is subjective.

Charming in a cosmic horror, your mind cannot possibly comprehend the true nature of terror, sort of way.  Like Cthulhu with a tophat.

I understand why writers did it, I just grumble to myself. I know they've made a lot of people happy, as they should, I'm simply not among them.

Oh, and I'll drive a lot of satisfaction from the game and the story and have my Hawke rise to become a champion. She'll just be a lonely thing as she reaches for that power :crying:

You know, she worked hard on Merrillcat, and I think Merrillcat is adorable. But if all you people are gonna do is tear her down, I'm going back to something more mainstream :crying:

The only straight romance being celibate, that's got to be some kind of joke.  Hardy har har Bioware!   I don't have his DLC, so not even an issue for me (not sure if I'll get it or not).

"Closed minded," well people tend to be attracted to those like them- for the most part.  I just can't relate to that outlook so it puts me outside myself more, the same way that playing a male character, I was at more of a distance and mostly putting myself in the female LI's shoes as I was playing it.  There is also the issue that others have brought up, that Fenris' and Merrill's "status" being so unclear and seemingly keyed to fanservice rather than their story is something that makes me less enthused about them as LIs.  And since they were the two I was planning to go with... well, I don't like Isabela and have no interest in Anders, so I probably will stick to the original plan, but overall it adds to my sense of pessimism about the game.

Yes. He's taken Chantry vows, so he won't have sex with you.

Yep, definitely, it said so in the guide book. Unfortunately we're not quite sure what exactly that means, but it probably definitely means no sex.

It can't be much of a romance if he's taken Chantry vows. I mean, the spirit of those vows is likely to keep yourself from attachments, not just physical contact. If he's gonna break 'em, he might as well... you know. But it could be sweet if it's presented as him kissing the PC in a moment of weakness or something. Sweet in a heartbreaking way.
