So is anyone wondering what the "catches" are with the romances this time around?
Like the Morrigan/Alistair "catch"?

You know it's in there, at least for one of the romances.

This question has been on my mind for days. I'm excited to find out ... and I'm sure Gaider et al will wallow in our tears once we all do.

Anders and Isabella are the only ones who are literally bisexual. Fenris and Merrill just go for whatever Hawke is (IF you romance them).

It's not like you have your whole team going on about how many men and women they've slept with.

Yeah but Mr. Gaider only wrote Fenris. That leaves 3 other companions, 4 if you include Seb. The Zev/Leli romance was actually quite normal...sort of.

I'm also wondering if you can make your companions jealous of each other again and how "cheating" will be handled. the one thing in DAO i didn't like was if you initiated a romance, on purpose or accident, everyone thought you were already sleeping with them. :? I think there should be some kind of recognition there between serious and none serious status. It was really awkward when I was serious with Alistair and I got the "you are staring at me" convo with Zevran, only I didn't realize it was flirting and the romance initiator. My response was "Oh, ok, whatever." Next thing I know, I get a convo from Leli talking about "how my Zevran was quite a character," and was making remarks about the nights we spend together.

I actually dislike that idea, as far as I can see it seems likely as a result the Fenris and Merrill romances are going to be fairly bland and generic rather then being more indepth so there won't need to variation between when Male or Female Hawke is romancing them (appart from changing he to she ), and to not have to worry to much about comments coming in banters etc.  I also worry that this malabilty will mean these two characters will have much less depth and characterisation then Isabella and Anders, because this aspect of their character will be naturally only surface deep (to depend on Hawke's sex), will limited reference to their past (unlike you go with the Origin LI).

I would much have preferred in making this game the devs had decided they were all bi from the start and then written the characters, but from this I suspect it will be Isabella and Anders who will have in the more unique and interesting romances and characters.

I might be wrong, but I'm not a big fan of this malabity to these to companions

Isabella's cheating on Hawke with an entire pirate ship.
Anders is going to be killed by Templars.
Merril finds out that the Blood Magic is killing her and she won't live past the final battle.
And Fenris must run away to protect Hawke from the people chasing him.

How's that for drama?

Are you making sh*t up, or did you just ruin the whole game for me?

And why can't I tell which one it is?

I'm guessing Anders.  Romancing the abomination sounds like a recipe for heartbreak.  But, all of them could have catches- I'm sure that would please the writers immensely.

@catabuca:  And the people on the forums who call the ME writing team "homophobic" because they chose not to write s/s romances (such as the ME romances are)?   But, the subject long since ceased to be old, so finis.

The ME writing team aren't homophobic. Just stupid. That they're stupid has nothing to do with what they chose to do regarding S/S romances, though.

I like to consider it a spoiler-vaccination.  I give you a dose of fake spoilers so that you'r prepared to disbelieve real spoilers.

The trick is to make them just believable enough that you are surprised when they don't happen.

I prefer avoidance to innoculation. I will most likely hide in PMs from the time I start playing 'til the time I finish the first time :police:

That's why I wrote 'Gaider et al' - et al effectively means 'and the others'. It is easier that writing out everyone's names.

There were a few awkward moments in the origins romances, sure. They were too easy to fall into. I don't know whether DA2 will have different attitudes by members during different stages of romance, but at least the heart icon will make it easier to avoid romantic involvement.

I bet it'll be just the same, they come on to Hawke, then the heart comes up for responding.  And when I don't choose it, they're going to act like I shot their puppy.  Again.

I personally believe the people who say the ME team are homophobic to be wrong, and I make this clear whenever that argument is raised (indeed I have just done so not 10 minutes ago elsewhere - how's that for timing?). Please stop generalising one opinion as belonging to everyone. You don't like it when 'the other side' do.

I doubt it'll make Merill/Fenris less complex. It is very much possible to build interesting characters completely disregarding sexual orientation (that's how it is in most games), and the way I see it, it seems like the types of romances for those 2 characters would work well for both genders anyway (not gonna go into details as to avoid spoilers).

I never hide behind PMS. When my ****iness presents itself, I own up to it.

And since the s was (quite deliberately) left lowercase, I imagine you're one of very few*

You've already shot their puppy once?

I knew there was a reason I preferred NotTale to you.

well that's true. i read a certain spoiler about him where i'm sure it would put a lot of strain on your character if you were in a romance with him when that situation occurs.

I know you didn't mean it that way. My very random mind just did a double-take when I read it. Don't see the need for mild ****inessImage IPB.

I was responding to a poster who said no one was demanding.  I also don't consider myself part of a "side."

I'm thinking that being a mage will put a bit of strain on a relationship with Fenris, especially if you side with the mages which I plan to do.  The question is whether it's an "it's over" sort of strain, a "I don't like that but I like you" sort, or an "imma gonna kill you" sort.

ah see but i am going the rogue route as usual, will be saving mage playthrough for later, but by that time i will have meta game knowledge. i suspect the mage route may play out like mage/alistair route in dao?
