Thanks for the stories! I really found them interesting.

The first pair of open shutters he saw and Fenris dived through. He
landed in a kitchen filled with the smell of baking bread, and a human
woman screamed as he rolled to his feet. No doubt the sight of an elf in
skintight armor, carrying a blade almost as large as himself, wasn’t a
welcome sight. He got to his feet and noticed the surprisingly comely
woman, dressed in a nightgown that revealed more of her cleavage than
she no doubt expected, pressing against the wall.

ROTFL
This is amazingly bad.

"The cave mouth is unbearably spooky, even for Sundermount, which you’d think was trying for some sort of spookiness medal.  Most Terrifying Mountain in Thedas, maybe. Mist swirls out of the blackness as if it’s breathing, and the hillside around it is barren. A gaping maw, devouring all the life within its reach…

Not a good mindset, Merrill. Think positive! At least the weather’s fair."

Merrill I think I love you. Scratch that I KNOW I love you :)

Ms. Hepler, so did Anders really eat parts of those guys in his story? The first time I read the "eaten flesh" line I didn't think much of it - like I thought it was just a metaphor saying the bodies were so messed up it looked like they'd been eaten. But now I'm not so sure.

Hmmmm...

Just a quick question. The Anders story is very (very!) cool and all, don't get me wrong, but if something like this happened to Anders (as in, he dissapeared after killing a whole bunch of templars and wardens), my warden (Warden Comander, btw,) would be all over it.

As in tracking him down, getting to the bottom of it all and trying her damdest to help him.

Again, I'm not trying to put the warden back in DA 2, this is Hawke's story and that's fine by me, but it would suck to think that my warden could abandon her friend like that.

Anyone else bothered by this?

Yes because my Warden would've hunted him down to kill him.

She'd probably cry while doing it but she can't let Anders change into some abomination and rampage at will.

From what I've seen on the forums and the intertubes at large, it's considered pretty "Forever Alone" to put much interest or effort into the love interests in DA and ME.  Many people apparently wish Bioware would take them out completely and focus on the stabbing darkspawn aspects.  But I must confess, the romantic subplots are part of the games that I really enjoy and that I think sets the series' apart from standard (that is, non-Bioware) RPGs.  Romantic love is part of the human condition, a huge, integral, all-consuming part, actually.   Just yesterday, many of us celebrated an entire holiday based around the concept.  Adding that element to a game is just one more step toward the video game experiences becoming fully realized stories, rather than simply a series of tasks or fights or achievments.

With that said, I am a bit disappointed with the (apparent) romantic attachments announced for DA2.  In both ME and DA I have played female lesbian characters.  I thought Liara was amazing in ME1 and ME2 Shadow Broker DLC (though I chaffed at all the simpering on whether it really counted as a same-sex relationship.)  I also really liked Tali and found it a bit annoying that she was a F/F love interest that was intentionally removed, despite the presence of completed audio files.  It seemed like a weak-kneed response to the Fox News controversy from the first game.  But then there was Leliana in DAO who was also wonderfully realized.  She was really quite a break-out from the same-sex stereotypes, she was mostly chaste (her past notwithstanding) and highly religious.  Not only that, she was sweet, caring, and had an unbeliveably sexy accent.

But if Isabella is truly the bi-female option in DA2...I think my Hawke will remain herself forever alone.  I would imagine gay men felt the same way about Zevran in Origins.  He was a great character and quite a cool addition to the party.  But I couldn't help but think his constant hitting on other characters (primarily the female party members)would become annoying if a male Warden was in a same-sex romance with him.  That, to me, is more game-breaking than having a party of four potential bisexual love-interests.  Which wouldn't be a problem if the gay male Warden had other options beyond Zevran.  You want the flighty guy who may be romancing any number of bar wenches behind your back?  Sure!  You want character Male character B who is more romantic, loyal, or simply different?  That's fine too.  Opposite sex characters had that romantic choice, same-sex ones did not.

Isabella (and, again, this is all purely speculation still) seems to be on track for a similar role as Zevran, and that's simply not appealing to me.  Now, surely anything can happen.  Perhaps the character is so well written and portrayed that there is far more depth to her than simply a sex-crazed, untrustworthy pirate.  But I was, and to a lesser degree still, hope Merrill will turn out to be a FemHawke LI as well.  But even if that's not the case, I can't complain too much.  As I said, Liara and Leliana were just wonderful characters and I really enjoyed and appreciated their romantic subplots, even if that does make me one of "those" gamers.

I am sad that there's no Aveline or Varric romance, though. Those are the characters I've been interested in the most.

While I really quite love Zevran and didn't feel the same way you do, I understand why someone might.

Either way, great post <3

To be honest, I probably wouldn't play Bioware's games as religiously as I do if it didn't have romance. Sure, someday I might buy it. But I pre-order and do my best to save up money to get their games as soon as possible. If it didn't have the romance aspect, I probably wouldn't either buy it or I'd wait a while till the price came down. Romance is everywhere. Its in movies, books, and your lives. People that complain about it don't seem smart enough to realize that you don't even have to romance anyone at all in the game. Why complain about a function you don't even have to explore?

Anyway, thats my opinion. I love Bioware immensely for their romance sub-plots. I get all games as soon as they come out with what money I have. Back when I was in school, I'd even save my lunch money instead of buying lunch just so I could make sure I'd have enough when it came out eventually. I knew my parents would never buy it for me, so I used that money.

I don't see a problem with the statement. It's the exact same sentiment as the gaggle of fangirls squeeing over how bishi he is and how he simply must be the bi LI so their yaoi fanon can come true... <_<

As much as I would have preferrd Fenris as the m/m option, those short stories seem to suggest to me that Anders will end up being the m/m option because there would be a way to parallel his motivations with being bi/gay and seeking to be accepted.

I don't have an issue with Anders as the option. :) But I'm a bit sad at the prospect of not being able to romance Fenris with mHawke.

Still - we shall see... :D

Apparently,

SPOILERS ON MERRILL JOINING THE PARTY

she gets her ass kicked out of the clan before or as soon as Hawke meets her.

END SPOILERS

so no big deal.

Actually, the only 'good-aligned' game character that I've ever wanted to kill was Aerie in BG2, and for exactly the reasons you just mentioned. Thought Zevran was alright, though, so I'm not too concerned about Fenris.

Oh gods, yes.  I started out being nice to her, but by the middle of the game's first act, I wanted her dead.

We don't know what happened to her, but if she is traveling in your party...I'm pretty sure she isn't following the rules of the Dalish anymore. Its not unusual for a Dalish to leave. Zevran's mother was Dalish. To romance anyone other than a Dalish, even City Elves, will get you thrown out.
If she is a companion then she no longer belongs to her clan. Besides, she is young. She is prone to falling in love. Especially for the infamous Hawke.

I'm not even going to broach the subject of what makes Isabela such a horrible choice in your book, but would it make you feel a tiny bit better to know that the same person who wrote Leliana wrote Isabela?
