@ReallyRue: Shale's acerbic wit made DAO for me and kept me from ever siding with Branka against Caridin in my play-throughs of the game. For DA2 I'd hoped for Varric as a LI, but since he's already entrenched in the role of storyteller and plot weaver, I understand why that's not an option.

@EtherealWriter: I definitely get an Anders+Justice/Vengeance vibe from that song, but now I'm depressed. Thanks. >:T

I don't find it depressing. I find it uplifting. Then again, all music to me is uplifting. Provided it's good music.

I kind of like that Varric's not an LI for that reason (although he would have been an interesting one), it makes a pleasant change to have a very important party member (likely the most important) who is not an LI in the same way as Alistair and Morrigan were. I hope it means we get a deep friendship with him without having to romance him.
I only got Shale once I got the Ultimate Edition, but I really wish I'd gotten her earlier. Soon became my favourite.

Thank god someone else said it. The whole 'dating sim' thing annoys me no end.

"I wish X's romance was better" ... "OMG just go play a dating sim!"
"I really loved it when my warden and X got together" ... "OMG just go play a dating sim!"
"I wish the sex scenes weren't so awkward" ... "OMG just go play a dating sim!"
"I wish all genders and orientations were better represented" ... "OMG just go play a dating sim!"
"Wasn't it lovely when Alistair gave me the rose?" ... "OMG just go play a dating sim!"
"I wish X was an LI because they sound/look awesome" ... "OMG just go play a dating sim!"

I might start answering any and all comments about combat in Dragon Age with "OMG just go play a shooter!", because seriously, that would make about as much sense as the dating sim bull.

I wish you'd read my response.  I don't actually think that people who play Bioware games ought to shove off and play dating sims.  My irritation with having so many LIs is that not enough attention is given to those potential relationships because the developers have to spread themselves so thin.  Case in point, most of the romance options in ME2 had the potential to be fantastic but all fell short of the bar, excepting maybe Tali'Zorah.

I cede defeat on the dating sim part and I'm sorry I ever brought it up.  :?  Didn't realize so many people bandied it around as a reason not to pursue relationships in Bioware's games, and that wasn't ever a portion of my argument.

I will have to say I hope there is a Achievement/Trophy for each LI like in DA:O, really encourages me to replay the game in different ways. One think i hope DA2 didnt take from ME is the single romance Trophy, I wouldve played ME1 and ME2 alot more than i already have if it wasnt for the single romance Trophy.

So all in all I hope there is a different Trophy for each LI, and I also hope its not as simple as to break up with the previous LI to get a new one. Hope the relationship evolves as you keep talking to them. Sorta like how you have to do a mission each time when talking on the Normandy to get new dialogue if your pursuing to see how doing all available LI in one ME2 play will affect ME3.

I think I saw in another thread that there is only one achievement for pursuing a relationship.  Nothing more specific than that.

Yeah, I saw this as well.  A complete list of achievements--excepting maybe five that are secret, I think?--was released recently.  Here's the link:  http://www.xbox360ac...2/achievements/

I read it. *has no willpower*

It was surprisingly non-spoilery, but then again, what I consider spoilers is probably different from what other people consider spoilers. :P

Last time I looked, there were lot's of 'secret achievements' that we couldn't look at, so that's probably where all the spoilers are hiding.

Yeah, they're all pretty much what you'd expect of in-game achievements. I wasn't too surprised by anything, and the plot is still ~*~*~veiled in mystery~*~*~.

For a minute I did, but I was like... No that would be too cheap. Especially since Varric goes "The world is on the brink of war, and you need the one person who can help you put it back together". Either he was talking about himself or Hawke, but if it's Hawke as I believe it is, a corpse is not very useful. Unless you're a demon. other than that nope you're royally screwed.

meh regardless I'll wait until March 8 when I get both my SE of DA2 and the Collector's Edition Strategy Guide to look at them. I just want things to be as much of a surprise as possible, y'know?

Anders, on the other hand, seems to be literally sharing his body with the spirit.  This could make for interesting conversations and as well as a highy unusual romance.

They did say in the dev diary that they were "trying some different things" or something like that.

I was wondering if the rumor that there is one romance which can only be started on the rivalry path might be Anders.  Assuming a rivalry path would mean opposing Vengeance, and trying to get the "real" Anders to come out.  I can say I don't find Anders appealing as an LI, but I'm very interested to see what they do with his story and hope that his buddy angle is good, too.  Like, I found Zevran's story to be almost as touching on the friendship path as in the romance.

Where does that rumor originate from? I hope it's not true :/

Ok, what Jennifer Hepler just posted on the Anders thread has me thinking my guess might be right:

As a general rule, the way friendship and rivalry works, is that friendship means agreeing with and supporting the follower in what *they* want to do, no matter how crazy, illogical or dangerous to self and others. Rivalry means opposing their big cause, often for the right reasons. So it's very possible to be a better friend to someone by choosing the rivalry path, since you're trying to stop them from giving in to their own self-destructive whims. It's not always the most intuitive, but definitely don't think of friendship as doing the "right" thing and rivalry as doing the "bad" thing. It's just as likely to be the other way around.

That's very interesting. It also sounds like it might make for a fuller, more rewarding, and more RP immersive experience. I often felt a little discontented the way approval worked in DAO, because the only way to make the NPCs like you (important if you want quests/relationships/stat boosts) was by toadying to them even when your character might not necessarily agree.

I have to admit, I like that idea of the frriendship and rivarly system allot more, sometimes if you really care about someone you have to actually attempt to stop them from doing things that are harmful to them.  This way around could make relationships (not just romantic ones) very interesting

Yeah, and now I'm thinking Fenris' story might end up with me feeling as torn as I did with Garrus.  Posted Image  My renegade Shepard let him take the shot, but after seeing the paragon path on YouTube I was kind of sort of sorry I did.  And with Fenris, just hearing what happened to him makes me think of all the creative ways to make the magister pay.  But vengeance doesn't necessarily bring peace.

and now I'm torn between which way to go for my relationship with Anders, if what I think will happen to him does happen.

if you side with Vengeance and destroy the Chantry, I'm afraid Anders will become a full Abomination. There will be no shred of control or self left within him. Yet all mages in the future will be treated as humans, not like the dirt beneath my shoes, fit to be walked all over.

Yet if you side with the man you (I mean actually YOU. Not Hawke but YOU) knew from your time in Awakening you bring both him and Justice back to their senses. Both would be cured, yet mages would still suffer the horrifying treatment they have been for centuries.

Ultimately, I assume the Anders-Justice cure would be the best, because he'd be back in control and could fight the Chantry and Circle without worry.

That's what I think will happen anyway given the friendship/rivalry paths.
