But part of the joy of choosing between playable sexes is that lots of things are different! Why should all romanceable characters be bi? It just takes some variety out of the characters that they write just for that. I've got nothing against having bi characters, I just appreciate having some heterosexual specific and maybe homosexual specific (long time since Juhani!) characters too. It's more interesting
Granted, but think about this... you're one of the people who's just in love with Aveline. Sorry, she's not a romance. You're pretty bummed (as a lot of people were). Now, imagine that they said, "Sure, you can romance Aveline. You just can't do it the way you want to. You
have to do it our way."
I'd imagine that a lot of people would say, "Hey! So, the guys get get some Aveline action, but we can't?"
I liken it to this: the fatigue system in Origins (hey, remember that?). You have to have some amount of strength to even put on the armor (just as the character has to be romanceable to begin with). But then, on top of that rather high requirement, it ALSO makes the stamina cost of your abilities go through the roof (just as you now have to pick a specific gender).
I think that one requirement is enough. If a character is romanceable by anyone, she should be romanceable by everyone. Less realism maybe, but better gameplay, and, most importantly,
more rewarding gameplay for the player.
