I've seen this discussed a few times here and there but to my knowledge there has never been a dedicated thread to the subject. As we all should know by now your decisions in ME2 could make the ending go in any number of ways, which includes getting everyone killed. What I think  would be great to really hit home that our actions have REAL consequences is having a potential "All is Lost" ending based on our past actions/screw-ups from the previous games. To me it would not only be realistic but also an extension of what ME2 did to emphasize, "actions will have consequences". One RPG I can think of right off the bat that had a potential "All is Lost" ending would be the classic "Chrono Trigger". Always loved that one, but that is just one example and I've always been a fan of multiple endings, both good and bad. Of course, there is always the KOTOR dark side ending. Not exactly "All is Lost" material but it might as well be. Knowing Bioware it is something that will be possibly included in ME3 and that I would definitely support.

Discuss!

I just want the survival of humanity to depend on one tiny decision you made in ME1.

I wouldn't mind it, but I kind of doubt it will happen. It kind of screws with continuity to have an ending like that. Though you could get Shepard killed in ME2 for good, so you never know. More likely I think there'll just be endings where Shepard and company live, and others where they die.

I get the feeling as Renegade Shepard seems to be more canon Shepard, that only Renegades will be tough and brutal  enough to survive ME3. I'm guessing Paragons might up end up making the heroic sacrifice. It'd kind of make sense.

The survival of humanity should depend on Conrad Verner taking a bullet for you. And if you shot him or pissed him off, he just stands by...

Even just thinking about it makes me sad for when Shepard will die.

Shepard should get indoctrinated at the end of ME3 and be the Big Bad of the next game.

I would love to have an ending like that!

Basically, if you have close to or barely the minimum score of required story "points" (like having the Rachni on your side, having peace between the G and the Q, etc.), then the story could require you to start making very costly decisions for the greater good... for example, sending the Alliance fleet into a Reaper killing field surrounding Earth? Other sacrifices, such as assigning half your team to hold the line, sacrificing yourself and Joker in a suicide run with the Normandy, etc. could also be required to stop the Reapers.

If you don't meet a minimum threshold of "story points", then the Reapers wipe out everything.

But then, that all sounds too complex. Of all the variables we might see in ME3's endgame, don't expect them to give us something that would complete change the outcome of the story. Although, it would definitely be something to talk about if it did happen.

Just sayin'. :P

The "canon" Shepard is actually just one that has as much carry-over content removed as possible so that new players don't get confused.  As for the books/comics, they tend to pick whatever is the most convenient.  If they need Anderson to be running around doing heroic things, it makes more sense for Udina to be Councilor.

As for paragons, they can get everyone out alive just fine, too.  Exhibit A: Collector Base.

My theory is that the best endings will be reserved for those who followed a pure morality path.  You know, since Bioware seems to hate it when people try to mess with their arbitrary red-and-blue system.

As for the OP: Yeah, why the hell not?  The possibility of failure makes things more interesting, and is what made the Suicide Mission so much fun.

Wing Commander 3 had a very nice fail ending where humanity is totally defeated and the Kilrathi bomb Earth to death. Something like that for ME3 would be fine.

I support this crazy idea. It would be a cool ending to see if nothing else!

Crazy? Hmm....maybe, but it can also make sense, and would be a real mind-blower too! Under the right circumstances of course. B)

Shepard: I gotta take a leak. Hm...I'll let Zaeed monitor the ship for a moment.

Cannot be stopped achievement unlocked - you failed.

Just joking, but, yeah, I would like such ending, but this one should be easy to achieve and not like how they did in ME2.

I don't think the success of your missions against the Reapers will have one thing to do with any decision you made in the game or any renegade/paragon points.

In KotoR, lightside or darkside, you Revan still wins. The only thing different is what they win.

would actually love it if there is an ending like this. It seems kind of weird to guarantee the success of the player when there are so many variables, plot twists and important decisions. just like ME2, the game would be way less interesting or engaging without the possibility of you and your team failing in the end.

Exactly my thoughts! I can remember my heart racing sometimes when I first played ME2 wondering if I did everything to get everyone out alive. Naturally, my first few attempts were not successful. :P

I really want this. The worse thing that could happen is that Shepard died in ME 2. Make it really impactful by having it possible that everything is wiped out. AGAIN.
