Because 10^2 = 100.

It's not.  Perhaps 10% better.

Uh.... it isn't? Who says it is? ME 1 hardly had any music at all, and when it actually played it was forgettable background beeps and boops for the most part. This is, of course, excluding the amazing Soverign, Saren, and Virmire battle themes. But overall ME2 had a FAR better soundtrack.

The music for both games was really good (yes, I can say nice things about ME2) I couldn't really say which is better overall.  Though" The Long Walk" from ME 2 is probably my favorite single track

That's entirely a matter of opinion. The difference (good or bad) is likely because the tone of ME2 is suppose to be darker. But to answer your question all I can say is because you like it 100 times more.

Seems like a troll post, but I'll bite.

Generally Mass Effect is considered to have better music, because it's different. There aren't really any games that have Mass Effect's style of sound. I dunno Mass Effect themes seem very fitting for the setting of exploring an unknown galaxy. Mass Effect 2 while good and fitting trades the unique synth/80s sound for something a little more dramatic and what you typically hear in most  Sci-Fi adventures.

Not all of ME1's music is amazing, but in general it feels right. The music almost always perfectly fits the environments your in. In ME2 you have a lot of the same tracks used over for various instances, even though many of those tracks are suppose to be dedicated to specific characters. ME2's themes in general feel rather Earthly. They don't really do much to convey the idea your not in Kansas anymore. ME1's themes give a distinct impression of being other-worldly.

But that's just my opinion and I am by no means a music person.

Perhaps Jack Wall is inconsistent? Certainly seems the case with numerous composers, like Inon Zur which create a fairly average OST for Dragon age and he know he can do better.

I don't know, I actually found ME2's music to be far more successful in terms of music. Sure, I suppose you could say that ME1's is definitely more atmospheric, but it certainly doesn't work for standalone music for the most part. Don't get me wrong, it has some good tracks, like Therum's battle theme and the like, but for most part, it just seems like synthetic noise. Which is definitely an interesting choice in terms of composition, but I know that I do not care for such.

ME2s music is very well done and diverse. I really like some individual pieces more than most in ME1. With the diversity comes a significant problem though: The game lacks this continuous atmosphere, this scifi vibe the first game had. Also I really love the menus music (in ME1), as it captures the essense of the Mass Effect feel. What I love even more is how that same music plays only one time during the game, at the end when you know that the big finally is comming and all pieces fall in place. It gives me goose bumps every time. I had no such experience in ME2.

IMO simplicity. Much easier to get stuck in your head. It all goes back to retro gaming, where that one series of chords or whatever would just resonate in your head as the theme song. Same goes for Halo today with that male chorus, or the Mass Effect galaxy map song.

the only superior music in ME1 was the "alliance victory theme" played during the "save the council" cutscene, and of course...the end credits.

i sat in awe when faunts came on. still in my opinion the perfect ending to a game.

That Faunts track fit so well with the rest of the ME1 soundtrack it was sort of like the crowning moment of an awesome game. It was a brilliant way to bring us down off the high of the final mission.

That the Faunts wrote that song and that it fit so well with what Bioware were doing at the time was an amazing coincidence. I seem to recall the story of how Bioware came across the band, they were playing in Edmonton and one of the devs heard them at a club and was blown away. Loved it so much and thought it would be such a perfect fit for the game they brought them on board.

I don't think they'll ever be able to intentionally reproduce that feat and I hope they never try...it's bound to fail, and just come off as awkward.

Me1 had the best song ever created M4 pt 2 by faunts after listening to that it made the game 100 times better. I liked the ME2 music a lot more as it was a lot more darker and dramatic and that is the preferred music i liked ( i'm not emo). the club music and the overlord dlc music was great as well but i got let down by the end song was good but not up to the standards to Faunts song.

I enjoyed the ambient music in ME1, they had a really nice vibe to them. The music is exceptional in ME2, but only really picked up during fights sequences. There wasn't enough stuff that you could just relax to.

It's really sad that if someone hears music that stirs an emotion in them, they feel the need to qualify the statement with "I'm not emo"

Really shows where the culture is at

Nail. Head. Hit.

It was the background music which really puts ME1 head and shoulders above ME2's soundtrack. Atmospheric scene setting music. My personal favourite being the C-Sec music but all of the background music is memorable.

That said, it also has Vigil and M4 by Faunts which in my opinion nothing came close to in ME2. Vigil being an eargasm of a piece which played during the best segment of any game (Vigil on Ilos). M4 being hugely satisfying end credits music in which the guitarist sounds like he's playing 5 guitars at once.

I can't really recall any atmospheric tracks in ME2, most the memorable tunes came during dramatic action sequences, and that's all well and good but like the above poster said, there's just no ambient, relaxing tunes whilst walking around.
