Why is ME1's music 100 times better than ME2's music?

As for why I think it was better: it was ambient, in the background, not in your face.

What is the point of this thread? Seriously...
I got the impression the original poster honestly wanted to understand what makes "the other side" tick. Not saying it *couldn't* be throwaway flamebait, but...
Unfortunately a huge number of people can not-, or refuse to comprahend the concept of subjectivity and enjoy claiming their own opinion as a universal absolute.

The OP obviously thinks that, 'Opinions on ME1 vs ME2 soundtrack' Might have been a less flameworthy thread title...

While I like the ME2 soundtrack better, there aren't many tracks that stick out, either. But I noticed the music more than in ME1 where it was more or less annoying background noise, especially during combat. I HATE most of the combat music in ME1.
The first thing I take notice of when watching a movie or playing a game is the music. Some crappy films have great music (like Evolution). I'd consider ME a great game series with mostly mediocre music. By itself. While playing the game it adds to the atmosphere. So I guess the question is what makes a good soundtrack? Working well with a game/movie or well without it? I'd say a great soundtrack carries emotions without what it was composed for.
Uematsu Nobuo's music I could listen to all the time. Talking about BioWare games, I really enjoyed the DA:O soundtrack.
By the way, the ME2 soundtrack is rather electronic, too. Some tracks are very reminiscent of ME1. But yeah, ME2 feels more epic. Not too originally epic, but I prefer generic over synthesizer any day (I absolutely hate 80s music^^).

ME1's soundtrack was better because it had Richard Jacques instead of that noob idiot Jimmy Hinson. He pretty well ruined everything.
Well, I'm given to understand that Jimmy put together the Samara and Tali tracks, two of my favorites from ME2. So I'll forgive him--this time.
ME fit the game. It was conteplative, mysterious. Same with ME2, which was way more action oriented.
Better is a matter of taste, and I'm happy I don't have to chose between them. Neither will ever leave my MP3 player.

Yes, Noveria's music from ME1 is good, and it's associated with only Noveria, but can you really sit here and tell me that it's better than Suicide Mission? The quality of the piece, and the overall emotional feeling you get with Suicide Mission is just so much greater.
And don't even get me started on battle music in ME1. The battle music in that game is so "thematically unified" that everything just sounds like electronic beeps and boops. I can't even remember 1 battle theme from that game other than Eden Prime's.

People tend to equate "better music" to "music in which they can pinpoint specific moments of gameplay", forgetting completely about overall quality of the pieces.

"Suicide Mission" is overwrought, and it's not even that original.
It's cheap and easy to make "epic" sounding music with simple ascending melodies. Most of the ME2 OST is good, I'm not saying it's bad, but it doesn't give one room to breathe. It's constantly sledgehammering away at one's ears. I much prefered the understated ambient elegance of the first OST, I thought it created a much more impressive and mysterious atmosphere for the whole game.

But that's exactly my point! People are defining "good music" through facets like originality, overuse, domination, and linkage to specific game moments, while forgetting overall quality of the music. Who cares if it's used often, or sounds like a piece of music from something else? Shouldn't quality be the main determinant for "what is better"?marshalleck wrote...

If you want to say, ME1's music was "more appropriate" for the game, then fine, I can understand that (and to an extent, agree with it). However, saying flat out that "the music in ME1 is better", without tying it back to overall quality of the piece, seems silly.
To the second part of your post, I agree with you, in that it is a little overpowering. I like it that way though: I guess it's just a matter of opinion.

Mass Effect 2's music gave off a much better impression at times, although sometimes a little boring.

But anyway, ME 1 soundtrack all the way. So much memorable tracks for me. I never forget the first time I stood in Presidium with that awesome music playing in background.

I thought ME1's music was close to what it was about. Exploring and learning, yet they threw in a nice hook when your ally dies at Virimie and when Udina gave shepard the business.
In ME2, the music was emotional. When it was hype it was hype, when it was cold and creepy, it sounded creepy, when things got dark, it had a track for eveything.
