I hate to be a downer but I'm 90% sure this is going to be the case in ME3. There may be one or two returning squadmates, but that's just how these games work. ME2 was almost entirely all new characters, what makes you think ME3 will be different? In ME2 most of the crew is only there for suicide mission and all the squadmates are more or less expendable as bad as that sounds.

I expect they will have significant cameo roles in ME3, sort of like Liara did. But I wouldn't expect much else.

Oh, I'm not saying they all have to be squadmates.  "Significant" cameos are fine, and a LotSB-style mission with each non-returning squadmate would be totally cool with me, as long as such missions fit into the plot well.   I'm sure Bioware can think up ways to include the old squaddies but not treat them like the Virmire Survivor has been treated (up until this point).  But if I hear that they're getting tiny cameos like Wrex and the VS, I might reconsider a purchasing a new copy.

Yeah I'm pretty sure Bioware will have significant cameo roles for most of the characters. Tali for example may or may not be the Admiral you talk to get the Quarian fleet to join you, etc. That's about what I'm expecting. Expecting anything more is just kind of delusional fanboyism.

I didn't mind Wrex's role in ME2 really, it seems reasonable that Wrex would go back to try and help the Krogan and become the big chief. Really the only cameo return I didn't care for was the Virmire Survivor. Which pretty much everyone hated, unless you already hated Ashley/Kaidan. Kaidan comes off as a complete douche which is really out of character for him. Ashley is a little more believable in that she's kind of a hothead, but even still Bioware might as well have had both of them say F.U. Though that's essentially what they did.

I think Bioware has learned their lesson though. Obviously if they try to pull another "Horizon" with any of the characters in ME3 they're going to have a lot of angry  fans. Or it could all be they simply have had something special planned yet for the VS. At least I hope so.

I agree with Bluko, although I've got one toe in the pool of "delusional fanboyism."

I don't mind cameo roles as long as they are done right and make sense. To assume that everyone is your friend and WANTS to stay with you after the SM mission is delusional in itself. Bioware knows this.

And as of right now..there really isn't any deal breakers for me. I know Bioware isn't going to implement multiplayer and if they do, I know that it will be EA's doing. I know Bioware better than that.

What takes more effort, developing characters you have spent years already shaping, and giving them roles despite the fact that some of them may not be used by every body, or starting from scratch with a whole other bunch of people who nobody has any reason to care about?

If Mass Effect 2 didn't take so much time on the characters rather than the whole Reaper/Extinction plot then I could see what you mean, but to do that now would just make Mass Effect 2 an almost complete waste of time.

Obviously you may very well be correct, but I am sincerely hoping Bioware are smart about this, as even most of the people who don't think the team will return are hoping they do.

Although if all this "We want the games to work standalone" crap is to be believed then we may all be very disappointed...

Honestly it's more difficult to write for a character that's already been in a previous game. It means that for all decisions possible with that specific character they have to take in to account. Having cameo roles greatly reduces the amount of time and effort they have to put into this. ME3 is coming out in less then year, and even if it wasn't trying to put all or even most of the crew back into ME3 squadmates would take forever. Certainly would take longer then 2 years, considering that they also have the main storyline to worry about. Every player needs to have available the same number and  types of squadmates. You can't have people go in to ME3 without any Biotic or Tech specialists. And writing stand-in squadmates for people who died is just silly then. You're better off creating a brand new and balanced team and then finding or creating reasons for old characters to move on.

It's far easier to create new characters who's stories and placement will make more sense in the narravative of events anyways. Frankly what exactly would Garrus' and Tali's roles be in ME3 other then to help you out again? ME2 was all about getting a team together and more so gaining their loyatly for the suicide mission. Essentially a good half of the game was about gaining the loyatly of your crew. We learn a little more about the Reapers, but for the most part ME2 is basically just an interlude to the big finale.

I'm pretty sure Bioware isn't going to have a loyaltly mechanic in ME3 simply because it's a bit contrived, and in the face of extinction personal problems should really take a back-seat. Also I imagine the crew is going to be a lot smaller in ME3. Maybe 8 characters at the max. In ME3 basically you'll get your new team together right away and then go deal with the Reapers. I mean in ME1 you pretty much got everyone right away, except for Liara. It really wasn't that time consuming. I imagine ME3 will follow suit.

I already swam in that pool before ME2. I thought I was going to have Grunt and Wrex on my team. And that I'd also have the cool Reptile/Frog man, crazy bald lady that kind of looks like Natalie Portman, a hot brunette chick, and a Salarian. All of these new people along with Liara, Garrus, Tali, and Ashley/Kaidan.

But then I talked to T.I.M. and I was like Harrison Ford: "WHERE'S MY FAMILY?!"

@Bluko: I giggled more at that video than I should have. But hey! You only got three out of ten wrong. Well, two and a half if you factor in LotSB. All things considered, that's not horrible.

Really, the only embarrassment out of that whole set was Kaishley Willenko. I'm okay with some returns, some temps, and some Wrex-level cameos, but any offstage deaths or Horizon 2.0s will result in fan rage/boycott/flaming bags of dog poo left on the doorsteps of notable Bioware employees.

multiplayer would ruin ME 3 in my opinion. So would a very crappy storyline.

That's the most likely scenerio, though Tali has any number of factors to track:

1) She might be an admiral, or some other leadership position in the Flotilla
2) She might be exiled
3) the Flotilla itself may have broken apart
4) She may never have been recruited in the first place
5) She might be dead (combined with any of the previous four)

Agreed.  Wrex cameo is cool. That's a role I could expect of him both in ME 2 and ME 3.  VS is in my top three range of "Who thought this abomination was a good idea?"

Yeah, I'll be putting this game under a microscope before buying.  I'm thinking no preorder bonuses for me

Yeah, pretty much all that and the other thing. Unless initial reviews quell my fears and doubts, I'll most likely wait for at least the first time it goes on sale on Steam before buying it.

Dear Bioware: Please build the game around the story (like ME1), rather than building the story around the game (like ME2). KTHXBYE.

edit:
And before anyone dogpiles on me for that, mind you I love ME1 AND ME2. I just love ME1 MOAR! :P

I have to say that the 'creator' theory is one I'd hate to see as actually turning out. It doesn't seem much like 'Shephard's story' if this happened.

I'd like to see something more about the 'Beings of Light', but I'm hoping it's just technology we can employ that we never really thought about using before, but can be re-engineered into our own specifications etc for advantage.

Everyone keeps saying "no multiplayer", but is it impossible to imagine that it could be implemented well without detracting from the singleplayer experience?

I know, I really hope it can be kept to a mature discussion on the possibility of a good MP, and what, as a community, we might want out of it.

I would have already paid off my pre-order for it by then, but that would just be rude and I wouldn't be buying any DLC for it for at least 4 months

As others have said I want to complete the trilogy.

So to modify your question, something that would ruin the series,

gaining loyalty of a new squad.

MULTIPLAYER======== Huge series and game destruction. But it is EA and I actually expect to see it implemented.

Seeing ME1 and ME2 choices sidelined. Should that happen the series will be ruined for me, I may rent the game beat it and return it to never play the series again.

I believe its possible if I look at MGS4, granted the MGS online isn't exactly the most popular thing on earth... despite being one of the more full featured MP games I have seen in awhile.

The problem is that it cuts into development funds no matter what, even if they brought in another studio, it would detract resources from a game which quite frankly should blow our minds in terms of scope.

I just don't see things coming together.
