I hope we can side with the Chantry and the Templars in DA II. Mages are simply too dangerous to live.

You should contact God for an employment, I'm sure He will be pleased with your view about power. ;-)

BTW, a little poem for you (I feel poetic this morning):

Nor for good nor ill, what aim has act?
Without its climax, death, what savour has life?
An impeccable machine, exact.

He paces an inane and pointless path
To glut brute appetites, his sole content.
How tedious were he fit to comprehend Himself!
More, this our noble element
Of fire in nature, love in spirit,
Unkenned life hath no spring,
No axle, and no end.

His body a bloody-ruby
Radiant with noble passion,
Sun-souled Lucifer swept through the dawn colossal,
Swift aslant on Eden's undaring perimeter.
He blessed nonentity with every curse
And spiced with sorrow the dull soul of sense,
Breathed life into the sterile universe,
With Love and Knowledge drove out innocence

The Key of Joy is disobedience.

@Amioran

Was that supposed to depress me? I liked it by the way but it sort of bummed me out a little.

Prisons have also provided prisoners with academic opportunities

Which isn't relevant.  I am saying they are prisons (which can have academic opportunities, sure) anyway.  We have access to an example of daily life in the Circle Tower in the mage origin.  I saw plenty of learning and teaching going on.   It was just as prevalent as the watchful eye of the Templars.

Because the issue is that it's not merely "supervisory imprisonment" when mages can get killed or made tranquil based on the decision of the Knight-Commander, and it's not a "collegiate atmosphere" when you're providing education to prisoners who are who are forcibly confined under armed guard and are all deprived of their basic freedoms and rights. It's a prison that provides academic opportunities, as well as death or lobotomy.

The Circle is no different; it's primary function is to isolate the mages from the rest of society, and keep the mages under the authority of the military arm of the Chantry.

That it is the primary function does not invalidate its other functions.  The whole situation must be considered, unless we (or our characters) are being idealogues.

Prisons don't become academic institutes because they provide prisoners with educational opportunities, it's a privledge afforded to prisoners.

And the fact that there are people who don't think the Chantry controlled Circles are the proper means - per the codex - illustrates that not everyone agrees with what the templars do. Unexpected and transcendent change is a possibility.

And if the people rise up to overthrow the status quo in just that way, I wouldn't be making this argument.

I guess we'll have to wait until DA2 to find out if it's a possibility.

I'm rather side with darkspawn and kill everyone. It's the only way to treat everyone equally fairly.

I know I'm a minority, but I can definitely see the perspective of the Chantry and the templars and understand it. And I think that most people here over-exaggerate the level to which the mages are "imprisoned." They're not punishing the mages, they're simply taking a necessary precaution. They're isolating the mages to keep the away from where they could possibly be dangerous. And while they are there, they are given a decent amount of freedom. Heck, we even know mages can get permission to leave (Wynne, Wilhelm, Fynn, the botanist from Awakening). The only mage we've met that was at all discontent with his living condition was Anders. The templars don't go around mindlessly slaughtering mages for the fun of it, despite popular opinion on this forum.

Heh so every mage should die even if they don't want to be a mage?

Thats like saying every african american person needs to die because they are black and didn't choose to be black.

Your analogy only works if all african people were mages, mutants or otherwise exceptionally powerful by nature.

They are not REALLY powerful. Besides in the old times they thought black people were monsters and had no rights just like the mages.

One problem with that, african americans are not ticking time bombs that could turn into monsters and start randomly slaughtering people at any given moment. All mages are potential 'bombs' Some mages never 'go off' but some do, enough that it warrents some sort of precaution.

Their is no real world analogy for this, we have never in history had a group of people who could A. suffer from the human condition and use their powers to KILL PEOPLE WITH THEIR MINDS to further their own cause, or B. have the potential to turn into horridous monsters that slaughter everything they can, at any given time.

The game hasn't done a great job of translating the lore of how dangerous mages can be, which hopefully Dragon Age 2 will show better, because if it wasn't for all the codex entries and background lore that tells me otherwise, I would agree with most that the mages chance to turn into abominations is not that big of a threat.

However, since the lore, codex, and dev posts are there to tell me it IS very dangerous, I am pro oversight.

Who is not really powerful? Mages or black people? Lost me here a bit. I probably should have said that racism is a bit different than fearing someone who could easily control your mind or let a fireball explode in your face with nothing more than a thought, a word and a gesture.

Seriously what with discussion about black people being monster, that's just racism even you try to point out Mages and Abomination. How is this even relate to topic anyway, it's just racist trolling.

A better analogy would probably be that in medivial times the church tortured and killed people in the name of god because they feared/suspected someone to be possessed by the devil. Or sometimes it was just a welcome excuse to get rid of someone who bothered you.
