I'm having trouble finding Disc 1 for my game :-/

The game won't start with Disc 2 in the drive, of course, so I figured I'd try the EADM method to play without the disc until I can locate my hardcopy.  I downloaded the EADM software, put in my CD key from the manual, and click the "Ready to Play" button, which brings up the launcher.  But when I press Play, it gives me the "Failed to authenticate the disc. Please insert the correct disc and try again." error.  Isn't the whole point of this EADM thing so that you can play the game when you don't happen to have your game discs with you, or am I missing something?

You are missing the fact that you installed from disk in the first place, and thats where all of the file and registry entries are pointing to. Just because you downloaded the EADM software, it doesnt magically change your registry settings.
You can either;
Uninstall the game, download from EADM, and reinstall once you have the source files
Contact EA support and ask them if they know what files or registry entries need to be changed
Search through these forums. Smoenoe asked something similar a month or two ago, and I think a workaround was given in their thread.

Ah, awesome. I thought maybe the DM software would just circumvent or fulfill the disc check on its own somehow, I didn't know I'd have to totally re-install it. What a pain. I'll see if I can find that workaround though, thanks for the info!
