Resource management would probably make it so he isn't a LI should he return, for some reason people really hate dwarves and the money could be spent elsewhere giving them attractive human #235 or attractive elf #323, which would give people more bang (literally) for their buck.

It just pisses me off that if Varric was a human, we'd have none of the "used car salesman" or "raping pedophile" comments that we hear about him in other threads. The very idea of Varric, if introduced to the people, would probably be well loved if you didn't mention his dwarfness.

Which is why I doubted Varric being a love interest, though I really wanted to ignore it and hoped for the best because from what we know Varric is already shaping up to be a mighty awesome character of his own right and I loved Mary's previous work. I'm just bitter because... well, three big reasons.

1. The other romances for FemHawke don't look very... lighthearted, somebody you can chill out with. Anders might've fit the role but the whole "I CAN GO CRAZY AND FEAST ON THE BODIES OF THE DEAD AS I RAPE AND PILLAGE" isn't... very lovey dovey to me.

2. As a straight guy, I had no interest in any other romance except for Varric. It's true, we have a lack of information about most of the others characters but the principle of each character and the few bits we've heard here or there have me disinterested. The companion that had me raise my brow and was interested in was Aveline, though I'm friend zoned there too.



3. The implications of a narrator being a romance could've been very interesting, I'm sure a lot of people would've done a Varric romance for -that- reason alone.

But alas, I have bitterness that sustains me. I just hope the people who were crying at the thought of not getting their two prefered love interests are pleased, though I'd like them to stop laughing in the face of anybody who held out for Varric.

On the bright side, we'll like the character for something that isn't simply because we can sleep with him.

Yea definitely, I mean Lady Hawke will have some serious relationship issues (vis a vis guys), between a bitter lyrium infused elf and an abomination. Varrick is the only normal guy around. 

I still do not understand the reasoning behind not making his a romance. A wasted opportunity.

I know this thread is going to be my first port of call after finishing DA2 for the first time. I'm definitely going to want to see how others react to the Varric we actually end up getting to what we have, not too unreasonably I think, built up in our minds over last half a year or so.

And yes fan feedback does make a difference.  It doesn't make any guarantees but saying it won't happen pretty much ensures it won't unless a writer or someone else on the team really advocates for it.

I'm assuming (keyword) most writers dislike dwarf romances too, we already know Gaider dislikes it. Not sure about the other writers, though they have to go on the dwarf shaped motorcycle and jump over thousands of human and elf shaped vehicles and going through multiple suspended mage fire loops while anti-dwarf protestors are shooting them with bullets laced with lyrium. On fire.

This is ignoring the fact that they have to make a perfect landing with nugs on the track.

Just to clarify the "saying it won't happen" bit was if all the time we all collectively threw our hands up in the air pouted and sulked about it never occurring. Occasional and individual saying it won't happen is perfectly justified.  Not blaming anyone if that's how it came across
It's just easy for me to be optimistic about the next game when it's so far out.
