Agreed. Cheeky is a good tone to shoot for, rather than racy.

@KawaiiKatie: You don't have to be scared, just google romance novel covers for ideas. There's really no nudity or actual sexual acts on the covers, just shirtless men and women with their straps falling off their shoulders, while both of them pose awkwardly near/holding each other. A lot of times they're not even actually kissing.

...I can't draw, but I was trying really hard to pluck up the courage to participate in the romance-novel meme.... but now I'm too worried that I'll ruin the joke...

I really love the Varricmance meme. I hope people keep adding to it! Varricmance is too epic to be contained! <3

Don't stress about it. Even if you don't think you're funny or punny or whatever, the key is, as Mike Laidlaw so wonderfully put, "Sexy, not sex." And don't lose sight of the absurdity :)

Since I'm being a forum wet blanket today, and in a bitter mood, while we (and I am speaking for others too here, they know who they are) appreciate others contributing to the meme, the point of the romance novel covers is to celebrate Varric's tremendous man-itude in cheeky and cheesy and corny ways. Contributors need to ask themselves if they could reasonably see the book uncovered on a major chain bookstore shelf. If not, the point of the joke is missed, and it becomes gratuitous and OOC smut with puns.

When in doubt, google 'romance novel covers.' Big embossed text, romantic flowy attire, awkward and unnatural poses for the benefit of the viewer, exaggerated masculinity and femininity... but nothing really more than PG-13 at best.

Sorry for the timing, cynicalmuse, I know this probably sounds entirely directed at you.

Well said, and I think it needs to be said.  It's a wonderful meme but it does run the risk of stepping too far into, well... what you said.  And when it does it loses a great deal of what makes it so funny.

I did model my second piece of art after a romance novel cover, but I did realize that I failed in the translation and it ended up being more smut than I intended and even went back to cover the main character more. I am fine with leaving it up in my DA gallery because there's a different audience that will appreciate it out there, but I will remove my links in this thread. No offense was intended.

I don't think the criticism was meant to be specific, more of a warning that it's not what the meme should become.

This.

I'm sorry for the harsness, Gilsa. I love your cover. I just worry about what the meme could become now that it's been released into the wild. No need to take down links.

Yeah, this. I think aimo has a good rule about her art that can definitely apply to this. If you wouldn't let your mom see it (or in this case show it to her to make fun of the utter cheestasticness together), it's probably not appropriate.

Oh, Gilsa, will you please leave up "Carved in Stone?" I loved that one so much! I mean, yes, I'm biased in favour of that one because I came up with the title, but it waS the first Varricmance cover with two guys! A "shocking twist" indeed! Please don't take it down, I didn't think it was too raunchy...

I just... ...I just really love lurking on this thread, and I love the romance-novel meme, and while I don't want this thread to get shut down for being too raunchy, I also don't want it to become elitist or... un-encouraging for new people or people like myself who possess--shall we say--minimal drawing talent... I mean, who's to decide what's "funny" or not? Let's just encourage each other....

.....because, hey, when it's Varric, it's love! I'm sure he would encourage all of us to give one another a big ol' hug! ...and then maybe kiss a little bit.... and, oh Varric, you never quit, do you...?

.......my point being... I don't know. YAY VARRIC. YAY LOVE FOR VARRIC! IT'S ALL GOOD.

It's cool. It's not something I would show my own mother anyway. I did get one person saying she'd try out the dwarf prostitute at the Pearl when I said that's where the "Stone-met, indeed" saying came from. =D

Now I have to sit here and strum my fingers on how the hell people make sigs that are 35 pixels high (or less). That's a whole other art form unto itself!

Edit: LOL, yuki, jinx. We both used the "show your own mother" analogy at the same time!

I just wanted to drop in here and say how awesome you all are for keeping a stiff upper lip despite Varric's non-romanceable status and continuing your pilgrimage to campaign for his appearance and romance in DA3. All this artwork, organization, and fan commitment is amazing.

Unfortunately, I can't understand the love for Varric, because I am personally a Fenris and Anders fan, but I do understand the desire for fans to support the character they love. Great job everyone and keep on trekking!

(BTW none of this sarcasm in case someone thinks I am speaking with a mocking tone. This is the internet so no one can hear my tone and might confuse the meaning behind this post. I really am indeed surprised by how committed all of Varric's fans are.)

Elitist or not it is just an opinion. We are ultimately not arbiters of what is humorous and what isn't. Just saying what we think, that's all.

That being said though a carte blanche "let's just encourage each other" can lead to creative inertia, and a self-indulgent atmosphere bereft of criticism - and places like that can become awfully insular and unwelcoming - of newcomers who may not understand the unspoken ban on criticism - not to mention well, boring.  As long as people do not take things personally, everything should be fine.

Take that for what it's worth.

^ What shorts said.

Also in my experience having tighter, more specific boundaries breeds more creativity.

It would just be unfortunate to have people down the line doubting whether it's a joke and think instead that it is an excuse to pull pairings out of our butts and indulge one another.

Yeah, otherwise we get called chest hair cultists or whatever, without realizing that along with our genuine like for the character, our tongue is planted firmly in cheek. Well, at least that's how I feel about it, might just be talking out my ass, heh.

Is it weird that I find Bianca more attractive than Varric?

Even Varric wouldn't hold it against you... she is a fine one.

Me too but there have been people on other sites pointing out this thread as an example of Bioware attracting the wrong crowd. Among other supposed failings.

Pphhhttt! We are exactly the right kind of people. We're intelligent, creative, and passionate. The fact that Bioware attracts us simply means that Bioware writes a good story filled with compelling characters.

I just watched a duckling bounce around in a pile of leaves, and I can still safely say that these novel covers have delighted me more than anything else I've seen today. Makes me wish I could draw ...people. Silky sheets. Bianca... *_* And with that, I return to lurking!!~

It's like one of those unauthorized tabloid fodder books, like the ones about Brangelina's relationship or something xDD

It's so beautiful though, payroo... *sheds tear*

Hawke can only hope s/he could experience the same kind of devotion in her/his lifetime :crying:

I love it, Payroo! From Varric/Bianca to the colouring to the cheeeeeeeesy blurb and title XD
