I think I took the idol shard.... that's when you're inspecting the mansion right? that thing is such bad news
Yah it's when you go back to the mansion in act 3 I think. I had Varric kill his brother in the earlier act(mainly because he caused Bethany to become a Grey Warden) And felt bad so I let him keep the shard.
Don't think it was ever mentioned again, kind of funny at the ending he brings up the idol as one of the reasons of the war breaking out when he has a piece of it with him.

Does he say that when you play a male Hawke? In my version he just says 'a case of hero-worship'. Does that mean canon says Cassandra is straight?tmp7704 wrote...

I never let him have the shard, he's not thinking clearly and it's bad for him. I do equip the rune that gets made out of it on Bianca though, so he gets it in the end.
Likewise, not letting Varric go all loopy fruit on me. Bianca is deadly enough as it is anyway.
Edit: I loved his and Cass' banter about Hawke after you beat the Arishok like that.

That was after my male Hawke beat Arishok... if lady Hawke gets different line then that's possible. It'd be just Varric's presumption though, doubt he really knows at this point if Cassandra does or doesn't fancy women.
I just beat the Arishock with my Fem Hawke last night, and Varric made the comment about Cassandra developing "hero worship". Cassandra responded by saying that she can admire a "strong woman". It seemed to me from the tone of her comment that Cassandra was more than a little attracted to my Hawke . Yikes! A chantry seeker is attracted to my apostate mage. Truly scary.

How many Varric friend points do you lose if you refuse to give him the idol shard? My Hawke handed it over (I think after initially refusing.) I just don't think she had the heart or energy to argue with him. (Especially because I think this Varric quest came shortly after Merrill's last quest for me, though I can't recall... I'm pretty sure my logic in having her give it up was that the whole dire business with Merrill shook my Hawke's confidence a bunch. Nothing like slaughtering a clan of Dalish to make you feel as if you have no business witholding shards of dangerous artifacts from your insistent friends.)
Still, I'm replaying now and will probably have her deny the him the shard.

By that point in the game he's usually locked in at 100% friend for me so I'm not sure. He seems to realize that it's affecting him though because he hands it to you saying he doesn't want to argue about it and then he rubs his forehead and says he needs some air.
My Hawkes are quite protective of the dwarf

None. You always talk sense into him if you don't give him the shard.

Just had to say Varric is one of the most awesome, well-rounded and well-done characters I've ever had the pleasure of "meeting". He was a staple party member from the get-go and, after that first playthrough, he will always, ALWAYS be a permanent party member. It was neat that a lot of the thread speculation pegged his personality pretty well, but it was just extra awesome that he was SO caring and did all sorts of behind the scenes stuff to keep Merrill and Anders safe and unharrassed.
And that codex entry when you first meet him. Being the son to try and help keep his mother together. Oh, my. Having some personal experience with that myself, it really made me respect the hell out of him from that start. He man technically be a dwarf, but Varric is a damn good man. Bar none.
As far as LI status, I'm torn. On the one hand, yes, I would have totally tapped that if the option had been there. But at the same time, he is just such a good and caring friend -- my Lady Hawke had the sweetest "bromance" with him. Their joking back and forth, looking out for each other on the battlefield... he's just awesome. And totally respect that he tried to talk sense into her when she started shagging the "possessed mage". varric is the kind of friend everyone needs. I'm... rather bummed he's not real, honestly. LOL But him not being a LI does put a funny mental image in my head of him strutting around Kirkwall with this as his theme song.
So, Mary, major props to you on this one. Outstanding job! In fact, it is so impressive to me that I must award you with this: a college football team down here in the south has fans that will do a Bow to the Awesome whenever their defense does an outstanding job (interception, fumble recovery, goaline stand, making an opposing offense go three-and-out, etc.). Varric is so freaking good, I must stand and give a Bow to the Awesome to you!
