Great little fic!
XBeth approves + 40
If there's anything else you might want to share, I'm always happy to learn/read anything about Varric ^^

@Merllle
Wow, that's excellent. Maybe we can make Varric an LI after all... Now, can anyone contact Mr. Bloom to make a voiceover for this?

Anyone knows what is the font for those subtitles BTW?

Mary, will you marry me?

I'm guessing you wrote that around the time those other shorts were written for the love interests? Seems the same sort of thing. It's a shame you couldn't talk the guys handling Codex duties to put them into the game! I think they really add to the characters. I loved your Merrill short as well.

Varric is just so readable/watchable, I would happily tuck into a novel about him or featuring him. A fantastic creation, and one of those rare occasions where something you hype up in your mind/on the forums actually exceeds your expectations.

I would say the biggest thing that surprised me (and that I love about him) is how perfectly balanced he is between comic relief and heartwarming confidant. By the end of the game he really did feel like my characters best buddie, without it feeling forced or relying overly on one liners and such.

But yeah, I could go on for days about how much his character adds to the game so I'll stop.

Aww yeah! I had given up hope of a Varric short story, but I think it's actually better that we get it now, because now I can hear his dialogue in Varric-voice in my head.

The messengers bits were my favorite part. Everyone has his back, awwww.

YAY! SHORT STORY!

That's so Varric :3 It's hilarious that everyone in the Hanged Man pretty much plays along whenever the messengers call for him.

And I love that Ser Thrask is in there. He's a likeable character, and one of the reasons I don't write the Templars off completely.

And the tweaking continues!! Now MengDe found a way of messing with the subtitles.

Bianca does not approve of my obsession with you. She believes you're a distraction.

The potential... The. Potential.

I fully believe that Varric could even play host to a card game among zealous templars and apostate mages and it would turn out without incident... or at least without the incident everyone would expect.

Anyway...
followed MengDe's guide and swapped Anders for Varric in the romance scene. You can watch it here:

Sorry for the sound quality, Fraps must hate me...

I had to turn the sound off, because if it ain't Brian Bloom speaking, I'd rather vocalize his voice in my head.

Anyway, I was switching between swooning and laughing my a s s off...it is so hilarious when whatever that was appropriate touching and kissing for Anders automatically becomes WHOA THERE, BOY for Varric (I was rolling in laughter when he reached for her chest instead of her cheek prior to the smoos--er--kiss).

But then came the soft glances, and I d'awwwwed :3

It seems that on the forum most people don't take alot of the events in the story for granted due to them being told by Varric who is a "liar".

So am I the only one who felt that (aside from a few obvious moments) that Varric was actuelly quite sincere and honest when telling Casandra the story. I'm thinking of the Casandra/Varric moment between act 2 and 3 where he says "I owe Hawke that much". Seems to me that he wanted Casandra to hear the truth in order to clear Hawke's name or atleast make him seem less of a bad guy.

Thoughts?

::dies laughing::

The epic love affair between Varric and Hawke's breasts, apparently.  XD  Varric is a man who knows what he likes.

So, let me guess. Once this thread gets too long and locked, the 4th edition will be named "Varric Tethras: 'Never heard of him."

I do think Varric is being sincere, though i like the idea that he exaggerates and makes some careful narrative choices.

I'm convinced he was being (mostly) truthful. If he was less caring and more of a scoundrel I might have had my doubts, but I think you're given a pretty good idea of his character and his motives in telling the story to Cass.

Exactly. While he is something of a scoundrel (but in a good way) it is clear that he is generally caring and has a sense of honor.

For some reason I think he is something of a dwaven Han Solo!

I agree. Even on the Rivalry path and while actively abusing him, he always seems to at least respect Hawke. He certainly has the eye for potential he claims he has in his intro. (Hey, aggressive Hawke isn't going to give 50 gold to the first dwarf who asks her!)

Replace Han Solo with Varric in Star Wars, and you can't tell the difference! (other than height-wise, ofc)

@Lizardviking I prefer to think of him as a "lovable scamp" :D

@jackkel dragon: I haven't been able to do a rivalry with him yet. It seems the only way to do it is to pick the mean options in conversations with him and I just can't do it. *so weak*

Varric is totally my weak spot. In my first play, Beth died in the Deep Roads so during that one quest they kidnapped Varric. I was all "Oh NO they DIDN'T" *rolls up sleeves, puts game face on*. And then I had to rain down righteous vengeance on Grace.

Nice!:P

While Merrill was my Hawke's romance. Varric will always be his one and true bromance.

At any rate. Hope Bioware will crave in and give the ladies a chance to romance Varric with whatever main character there will be in DA3. Hopefully they wont make him crazy and have him secretly plot to blow up the merchants guild.

Indeed yes! If your sibling is dead and he is not in your active party at the time. I'm not sure what determines which companion is taken but I suspect probably all of them potentially can be.

The priority list for that quest: (must not be in active party)
- living sibling
- romance partner
- most friendship points

I'm considering dismissing or killing characters until only Aveline and Varric are in my active party one of these days, just to see what happens. ;P

I think you can get rid of Aveline too can't you? I believe the only one you can't ditch is Varric.

But that explains why they kidnapped him. I had a dead sib and my LI in my party and Varric was the first to max friendship. Interesting!

He is easy to please and to be honest since his Frienship self buff is 5% more Attack Speed and Dodge? I have no reason to ever drive him to Rival. Would be more trouble than it's worth. Varric is like Isabela though. They both respond highly to sarcasm. Partly why getting friendship with them is a piece of cake.

I went over companions that can leave, and the only ones who can't before that quest are Merrill and Varric.

Also, rivaling Varric is easy when you find out which conversations affect it. The "business discussion" can get a +15 right off the bat. The accumulation of +5s from little things isn't as common as with friendship, but Varric was mocking me long before Act 2 was over. Of course, playing a mercenary aggressive Hawke sometimes gets friendship boots from asking for money. I wonder if Varric was telling the truth when he said dwarves are like magpies...
