Ouch. That is cold. I've never played a mean Hawke before. I'm guessing that's the only way to rival Varric? He'd always the first one to lock in on the friend meter.

Well, first of all, Varric LOVES to elaborate on his tales, so if you just skip asking him for details you would gain rival points.

Then he also hates violence, which is usually Aggressive Hawke's hobby lol For instance, after Donnic is ambushed, Hawke can say "Somebody needs to die for this!" and Varric "disapproves". Also, threatening the guy who works at the docks would gain you rival points...

So in a way, mean Hawke has an advantage when it comes to making Varric a rival.

But if you want a full guide on how to get his rivalry points, the DA Wiki is useful.

I actually laughed my ass off at the bonbons comment from Varric, so much snark!

For those in the know is it just Varric's dialouge with Hawke that changes if he is a rival, or is it also with Cassandra that it changes?

Heard conflicting things about this.

If I recall correctly, the way Hawke is described to Cass is as if he doesn't really like Hawke... But I think it's a blink and you'll miss it thing.

Okay, so there's this kmeme prompt I've been eying up that suggests an alternate universe fic where Hawke's year in indentured servitude is served with House Tethras... Just exactly *what* would House Tethras need Marian, Bethany and Aveline for? I need some ideas that don't immediately jump to the obvious kmeme answer.

Ohhh, that's a tricky one (also, hi, I'm new to the Varric thread).

What class d'you have Marian as? I reckon you could play around with different tasks set for her based on that. If she was a rogue, I could easily imagine Varric snagging her for a bit of not-strictly-legal activity. ;P

Bethany is a mage, and Aveline is a warrior. I pretty much imagine Aveline being set to be security guard for the Tethras warehouses, or a body guard for Bartrand and Varric (I imagine she'd have so many complaints, too). Unless Bartrand wants to make use of Bethany's magic for business purposes, I imagine she'd be the one most likely to find herself in a domestic servant position, much to her disgust.

Combination of what Athenril and Meeran needed. Well, maybe not the hit jobs, but more killing than Athenril's sort of smuggling involved. Keeping tabs on the Coterie or the Carta? Cultivating ties in the city guard and templars in order to facilitate bribes? Just some thoughts. Can't wait to read what you come up with!

Varric doesn't like the direct approach, if you have a Hawke who is really aggressive and just plows through things, you will get rivalry points with him rather quickly. Like lets say you kill Javaris, you will get rivalry points with him.

 Ah, Varric, where would we all be without our loveable dwarf companion? "Crying ourselves to sleep" of course! 

Love him, love everything about him (even when as playing as a "bad" Hawke, it just felt impossible for me to be an arse to him, he's just too easygoing and loveable!)  I could easily just sit and listen to him spin tall tales all night at the Hanged Man if I could...
