Although, I will admit that I am torn on this "to-romance-or-not-to-romance" issue.
On one hand, I absolutely ADORE Varric as he is right now: the best friend. He is awesome and supportive and mother hen-ish, and there's something to be said for having that nice, close bond without sexual tension involved. That's especially appreciated by my non-mage Hawkes (which are a-plenty) who, despite Carver's irksomeness, often feel a brotherly void in their lives and Varric seems to fill that in. He's the one I feel my Hawke can turn to (or just go have a beer with) when Fenris is having a broodfest... or Anders is being all manic with his manifesto... or Merrill is pawing at her Mirror of Potentially Awful Consequences again... or Isabela is off being, well, Isabela. So, I can definitely see where Mary is coming from with the "careful what you wish for" tone. Varric is about as perfect as a companion can be, so there is a fear and a hesitancy of potentially hurting that by forcing in a romance if it doesn't feel (especially to his writer) right or natural.
On the other hand, I am terribly selfish and would be highly intrigued by Varric being romancable. He's got everything there is to swoon the ladies (Gaider and his "dwarf/human relationships are icky" be damned): ruggishly handsome, suave vocal delivery, smoky/husky voice, roguish activities, snarky sense of humor, protective of his friends and family, loyal, 100% real and what-you-see-is-what-you-get. The list goes on and on (and I don't even have to mention the chest hair; it's a given). Sorry, but who WOULDN'T want to tackle-hug that? I kinda want to dry hump his leg just thinking about it.
So, I don't know. Ultimately, it's Bioware's decision, I would assume, and if Mary doesn't think it would work and can't conceive of a viable way to write it without discrediting her already brilliant character, then I wouldn't want her to force the issue. But I will say that Varric is my favorite companion (I practically take him EVERYWHERE with my Hawke... he is the blanket to my Linus) and ANY additional content revolving around him (romance or not) would be absolutely welcomed. In fact, anything that adds more Varric content makes me feel like this:

Although I still plan at least one, no-romances rogue playthrough with my Forever Alone Hawke who will pine for Varric and save herself in the off-chance that he will ever consider her less "high maintenance."
But I do have two questions for Ms. Kirby, should she poke her head back in here and choose to answer them:
1. How's Bartrand doing these days, for those of us who helped Varric place him in a sanitarium?
2. Will we ever find out how/why Varric eventually leaves Hawke after endgame (where he reports everyone except "current love interest" leaves the Champion)? Difference of opinion that was insurmountable? Homesick for Kirkwall? Guilt at leaving House Tethras twisting in the wind?

Oh and I already have a Forever Alone SarcastiHawke that pines for Varric...

Y U NO GIVE ME VARRIC LURVIN' BIOWARE?
Personally, I won't take what Mary has said as completely ruling out Varric romance... Hell, I don't think anyone is perfect really. Writers can invent problems for him in the future (probably not DA2 as he's needed as a neutral party there). I don't mind if DA3 (or 4, or 5) has a different protagonist, I want to explore what Varric romance would be like, I wanna know how the story plays out... You could let him have a bit of commitment issues (ala my beloved Zev but not carbon copied of course) initially due to some past trauma (...Bianca..? Is the namesake still living... or...).
I mean, just see Anders in DAA compared to DA2. He was laidback and pretty much okay except for some phylactery issues but he is given extra dramaz for DA2...
Oh and for those who argue of Varric losing his "bro-value" if he becomes an option, I think that opinion is silly because a bro character like Garrus (Mass Effect series) manage to maintain his "bro-ness" despite becoming a romance option

I thought Gaider was said to seem pretty open about it (dwarf romance!) according to Virusq when she asked him at Gamescom?![]()
Oh, has it changed? I just remember back in, like, the first Varric thread that his initial reaction to everyone pining for a dwarf romance was "ew" or "icky". I guess it could have been tongue-in-cheek, though. Always a bit hard to tell with that boy.
Personally, I won't take what Mary has said as completely ruling out Varric romance...
The fact that she has even engaged in dialogue with us about it gives me some modicum of hope. Means she's at least thought about how a Varric romance would or wouldn't work, if nothing else.

Or even one of the ones she listed that she seemed unsure how much they would "change" his character. I actually would be tickled if it was something as "simple" as his feeling awkward because of the difference in race. More likely, I would think, is the potential deathbed-promise-to-mother. Varric doesn't give a rat's arse about dwarven society/tradition/values, but his codex entry (and general nature) show he cared very deeply about his mother. What if her dying wish really was for House Tethras to not end with him and Bartrand? With Bartrand now either dead or in the loony bin, the potential guilt/pressure for producing an heir would fall squarely on his shoulders. And given his reaction to the House Tethras ring gift, he's still got some shred of sentimentality for it, despite his apparent laid-back aloofness in all things rigid and dwarven. There's your potential "inner conflict/turmoil/what-have-you" that could have some possibilities, could lead to some interesting conversations, and all without changing Varric's character/demeanor too much (in my opinion).

If I learned anything from DA2 romances options, it's that is now everyone must be f***ed up in the head. (The exception being Isabela and Sebsastian. She's just a selfish tart, and he's just a spoiled, hypocritical choirboy.)![]()

Varric BSing Cassandra completely about everything, including not knowing where Hawke is. Cassandra buys it and leaves. After a few minutes, hawke sneaks out of hiding and throws her arms around her mad dwarven stallion, who smacks her on the rump and says "Who's yo daddy, baby!"
So, I am content with things as they are, for the moment.

No, I definitely want to make sure the Tethras' line's obvious genetic superiority is avilable for furture generations to enjoy. Varric must reproduce, this is a commandment of the Maker.
Though, I suppose i could accept a Hawke/varric romance if it was revealed varric had secret dwarven love children he was secretly paying child support for as well as coaching their little league games. Then at least I'd have assurance that his awesome will outlive him, and I can then have him and his chest hair all to myself.
Bianca's just gonna have to deal with it. I ain't afraid of no possibly sentient crossbows....<_<

No. The drama has to be why they can't be together.
...I just figured the in-game relationship(s) between Hawke/(insert LI) fulfilled that aspect.
But there is drama, if you think about it.
SOMETHING causes Varric and Hawke to part ways. SOMETHING causes him to stay in Kirkwall and still have access to Hawke's estate. SOMETHING causes Hawke to put a giant dwarf sized stone chair on his/her living room floor. SOMETHING drew Varric to Hawke in the beginning.
SOMETHING also removes Bianca from Varric.
My current pet theory is the shard reminiant found at Bartrand's estate. The player is given two options: destroy the shard or let Varric keep it.
If you destroy the shard, chances are Varric is still infected with whatever siren song that stupid piece of lyrium carried throughout the game. Destroying the shard destroys that chance of investigating what happend to Bartrand. It destroys the opportunity to delve deeper into the Thaig's history/worth. It symbolizes Hawke's distrust of Varric's own willpower/restraint.
Letting Varric keep the shard improves Bianca's performance. ...But we all know what it did to the other weapon it touched. Who's to say that all that attention Varric bestows on Bianca didn't get a little extra demented with the shard involved? What would keep Hawke from outright burning Bianca to destroy the shard and get Varric back to his old self? You can't tell me he'd be okay with losing his baby and his love interest in the same move. No wonder he didn't follow Hawke off into the sunset -- the fan fiction was better!
Not that I want to argue with anyone. I'm a strong believer that the existing relationship between Hawke and Varric is perfect as is. I'd appreciate a kiss, but the winks and nods are already there. I'm not sure I'd want to complicate it with romantic drama. Lord knows I don't want another Morrigan or Anders on my hands. I just want some snark and attention for my Hawke that doesn't come packaged with crazy demon mirrors or qunari relic theft. ...And I have that. As is.

I really appreciate having had a chance to speak to David Gaider about the whole dwarf LI thing. I didn't get the slightest hint that he was completely against it, simply a little weirded out by the implications involved with pint-sized women in pig tails bouncing around seductively. And, you know, when you think of it like that, I can totally see where the problem arrises. But Varric is completely adult: deep voice, chest hair and all. I can't imagine any size complications from a Varric/Hawke relationship, except for maybe having to redecorate the house. ...WHICH HAWKE ALREADY DOES.
TL;DR: I wholly support the writers' decision to friendzone Varric. They're professionals. This is what they do. You love them, or you wouldn't love the character(s) they created.
...But. You know. A little tomfoolery goes a long way.
