So that's why I'm asking the following question:

Is it actually POSSIBLE to get him as a rival?

Sure you can! You just have to be a bit of an ass.

You can be a marshmallow! More specifically, a marshmallow that's been over the fire too long - all crusty and hard on the outside, and squishy sweetness on the inside. A hot-headed grump who  loves punching the stuffing out of fools and throwing ale on bad poets in bars while secretely helping elderly people carry heavy things and making up stories about elven heroes to the children in the Alienage.

My elder sis says the key to making Varric rival you is to NOT let him talk.

You know the "Investigate" button where you ask to know all kinds of fancy info? DO NOT click those options. Varric loves the sound of his voice

Then act all aloof and such, rather than snarky. He always dislikes meanies XD
