Did Varric's rivalry and felt it was completely... well, I don't like it. It doesn't have the "You disagree with Varric" feel, it feels more like Hawke is an **** and Varric follows along because there's nothing else to do. I've done multiple 100% rivalry playthroughs with everybody but after the first one, I've had to argue with myself to stop doing Varric's friendship.

Wow, gosh that's hilarious! I love how developers think of these things! It's wonderful to see a facet of his character reflected in a detail like that. And who doesn't love that voice? xD

Anyway, did it bother anyone that Hawke snaps at Varric when he narrates his/her actions briefly in Act II? At first I thought it was only because my Hawke was a goody-two-shoes diplomat, but then I learned all Hawkes react this way, even a sarcastic Hawke! Personally I thought he was just having fun, and wished my Hawke would've played along.

I feel that being rivals with either Aveline and Varric is really meant for meanie Hawkes only. Mary Kirby once said that rivalry is supposed to be going against the character's beliefs and behaviour? Well, I guess it's a sign that Varric and Aveline are already quite good people on their own. Not to say that everyone else is bad or anything but you know, flaws...

I find it easier to pursue a rivalry with Aveline than Varric. That said doubt I'll ever manage a rivalry with Varric.

I tried so hard to get Varric to be a rival with my angry Hawke. I even had him kill Bartrand after Anders made him slightly more sane or whatever. But then I got friendship by talking to him RIGHT AFTER THAT.

Well, I guess it would make more sense in the story for Varric to be Hawke's friend, which is why it is harder to be rivals with him than it is to be rivals with, say, Anders or Merrill. He wouldn't want to tell Hawke's whole story if he didn't care about him/her that much.

Completely un-related but thread relevant... Next quarter I may have access to a machine shop... Which means I may fullfill my dream of a making a functional Bianca crossbow.  Or atleast try.  I may have to press some mechanical engineers into slavery an extra credit project.

I think it can be operational but I don't think I can pull off the folding up part (ie. when Varric goes out of combat and puts Bianca on his back).

That's a good point. But then, that could be why friendship points are so easy to get, because a neutral Varric wouldn't care as much.  But then, he must care to some extent.  He does follow Hawke around for like ten years after all.

I also wonder though, if Hawke's story is actually more interesting, or if any of the narrative is embellished by Varric since he likes making stuff up so much.  I guess video games are a hard medium to show that with though. :/
