Well, in liking a dwarven character and dwarves in general, oftentimes the sense of humor comes with a bit of defensiveness attached. It's kinda difficult to always be funny and jokey all the time when what you genuinely do like (even if you don't take it as srsbzns) is constantly belittled as disgusting or weird or whatever. Especially when it is just based on a physical attributes that are also found commonly amongst humans in real life, and that much more when that opinion pervades the entire forums and player base and even the dev team. No one loses anything by a handful of people liking a dwarf character while those who like dwarves and dwarf characters do when people say they find dwarves disgusting or refuse to play as them. Sometimes it's difficult to keep your mouth shut, and of course you're gonna look like you take yourself super seriously when you're trying to defend yourself and get a point across. But I don't blame people for having preferences, as preferences are often influenced by larger social issues and I don't want to get into that.
So yes, there's a bit of snark laced with defensiveness, but for the most part we don't really take ourselves seriously and geniunely like and want to talk about Varric as a character despite not being able to shtup him. I think our reaction as a group has been evidence enough of that. Anyone is welcome here, just saying why sometimes people respond the way they do when Varric in particular is insulted.
