Skeptical? It's an odd choice of words.
I knew, for the most part, the kind of games that BioWare tends to make. I expected this to be, more or less, one of those. That was never in question for me.
While far from the ideal of what I'd ask for if a cRPG was being tailor made for me, DA:O was a game I thoroughly loved, warts and all (and yes I think it had a few.)
The marketing thrust for DA2 which hyped changes and often seemed to border on (sometimes crossed the line completely into) trash-talking Origins had a very negative effect on me and my views of the sequel. I'm never really a fan of marketing, but marketing that pushes all the wrong buttons sure does trigger a response in me.
When the devs and previews and such start listing the "problems to fix" from Origins, they weren't things I had problems with. A few things I thought could be changed got mentioned here and there, and were moments of "ok, I can get behind that" and some stuff changes or tweaks were things that I was ambivalent about. But always in the background was that horrible, horrible marketing.
Deep down I always knew that Dragon Age 2 would probably be a game I enjoyed playing. At the lowest point I had started to question that, looking at my experiences with NWN and Jade Empire (the former I ended up not liking at all, the latter being a game I only finished once and overall have mixed feelings about) and wondering if it would end up somewhere in the middle of those two games on my range of enjoyment.
I should know better about ads and marketing. I worked in marketing for a number of years, I really should know better. But my excitement for the game did take several very large hits.
Finally we started getting the devs talking more candidedly, with Mike Laidlaw hosting a few videos showing off combat for example, information began to be available that was not just buzz words and glossy spin. And finally I started getting excited again.
Was I skeptical? I still am skeptical, if we must use that word, on whether many of the changes will be for the better. Much of that is due to personal preference, so it'll be opinion not fact.
But am I more excited now that I have been since shortly after the sequel was announced. That is a resounding yes. I currently am in the process of upgrading my computer so it's above the recommended specs.
