I'm wondering, is it okay for a 'good' character to do that? I always thought about it as a sort of crafting tutorial only, but what if someone steps on his poison traps in DA 2?

I'd hazard a guess that the Warden doesn't find out about it in DA2...

Truthfully, it would depend on what these 'beasties' Barlin refers to are. If DarkSpawn, then no problem. If vermin, not much problem either. If a sentient race (human, dwarf, etc.) then questionable at the very least.

I don't do it. The point is brought up that innocents could wander into the traps, and he just plain doesn't give a crap. That took it off the table for my character.

So what about the standard traps quest?

I do it. I figure the traps are for the darkspawn so no probs.

I don't do it, either, although the woman is less creepy. I figure they should be heading north even if they have to walk, and giving them a false sense of security isn't going to help with that. My PC has seen the horde first hand and knows that no amount of traps is going to stop the darkspawn.

I always give him the traps, although I do poke fun at him for his wacky idea.

As for whether it's "okay for a good character"... I don't feel that this has anything to do with your character's morality.

I did it as a good rogue. Yes, there is the danger of some refugee setting off his traps. But I desperately need cash at that point — which must take precedence, as I'm the only one capable of stopping the Blight — and I can reason out that one of his traps might actually kill some darkspawn.

The "Traps Are A Girl's Best Friend" quest is even less of a concern to me. I'm just giving that Allison a handful snares. At best, those will slow darkspawn down; perhaps that will mean the difference between her getting caught by the darkspawn or escaping the farm when they finally come there. And again, I need the cash.

Not everyone in Lothering died. Witch Hunt mentions that Elder Miriam — that snarky old lady who you give the poultices to — managed to survive.

Don't think much about it, always do it. I'm a laissez faire kind of person. I need coin to fight the darkspawn, you want to hire me to make you poison- deal.

Really? I missed that! Good to know. *Sigh* I imagine Bryant still died, though. He would have been in the thick of it.

Seeing how Bryant and the Templars were really the only line of defense (at least, a reliable one), I'd say that yes, they died in Lothering giving some refugees a chance to escape.

But yeah, reading that bit in Witch Hunt made me feel better about the fate of Lothering. It would've been great if some comment were made about the traps.. :P

I wish I knew who the Bann was that abandoned everyone for sure so I could hate him or her properly. It was almost surely Ceorlic, but I'd like confirmation of that.

In fact, the DLC mentions that Elder Miriam and the village council are beginning to rebuild Lothering and have erected a monument to the Warden and the others who died battling the Blight.

It helped cheer me up after reading that the Alienage was still lagging behind the rest of Denerim in its reconstruction efforts. (tired sigh)

Most likely, yes. He probably would have stayed as long as he could to give others the chance to escape.

Fear not, the templars left early.

Bethany: ...a templar. I thought they all abandoned Lothering?
Hawke to Aveline: A strange time to be hunting apostates. His fellows left with the Chantry priests.

I always do the poison quest for the experience and did the trap quest with my character that had the trap skill, never really thought much of the moral implications. I think most of my characters would think that if someone was dumb or unlucky enough to wander into a trap, bad on them. My next character who in all cases will do what I believe to be the right thing no matter the consequence might skip this quest. I'm leaning that way now.
