Better sidequests: ME2

Side Stories: ME2, as admiral said ME1 was more like a move where as ME2 was more like episodes.
While the main plot on its own in all honesty was not bad but not brilliant, the collectors where pretty ho hum and while supposedly tens of thousands of colonist where being taken and its pretty horrific if you think about it I could never bring myself to care. I suppose that the “can’t personify galaxy” thing. The loyalty missions however were goddamn excellent and presented very well and that’s more where the focus seems to be rather than the main plot anyway.

Also if you've ever payed attention to the story in trilogies, you'll notice that most people will tell you that the 2nd installment of any trilogy usually has the weakest story of the three. This is usually due to the second part of a three part story will usually either a) be heavy with back story in an attempt to give the story a since of concreteness outside of the confines of the trilogy or

You dont really need the dlc as it is mostly just side-tracked story that either gives you a little background about characters or the universe. DLC is basically long side quests that are really fun and enjoyable, but aren't entirely necessary

Depends on which story structure you prefer. ME1 was like one big movie. ME2 was episodic. I think ME1 had a stronger central plot, but ME2 was more emotionally engaging. I like both.
Also, brace for flamewar.
Well said.
I think video games work better as episodic story telling - with dozens of missions, I like the smaller story arcs to keep things engaging. However, ME1 did have a much more epic main story.

ME2: It was more "Mass Appeal" than "Mass Effect". The human race has now taken the center stage in the overall importance category for this installment (Shepard working for Cerberus, Humans having more presence on the Citadel, Humans having the most complicated genes of any species) but it also tries to cram in the most ridiculous plot device to further emphasize the human element by including the Human Reaper for some dumb reason that's never brought up.
ME3: Just when I thought ME2 was going too far with it's broader appeal, the story of ME3 brings us to Earth. Congratulations. You've successfully turned Mass Effect into 70% of every scifi game known to man. Save Earth from aliens. Boring, unoriginal and down right anti-climatic to Shepard's story line. I wanted her/him to do something really epic, not go save a planet that has had no relevance to the Mass Effect universe.
Earth's destruction would be a benefit to Mass Effect, not a hazard.

ME1/ Great opening - weak middle - epic finale.
ME2/ Opened well in that it was a shocker- middle was weak - ending was awful.

ME1: I actually LOVED the fact that humans aren't an important race. Shepard was a great character and leader who just happened to be human. And everything that was going on was all inclusive. There was a bigger picture that involved everyone, not just the human race.

1) the emphasis on humans is BECAUSE of shepard and actions taken in teh first game
2) Shepards actions lead to the death of a reaper BEFORE the rest were there (the derlict reaper died after the invasion started, if thats somehow a spoiler sorry but its not like its a big plot twist or something)
3) (and this is the General Discussion forum so talking about what Im about to talk about is a spoiler so don't yell at me I didn't mention it first he did) (oh and spoiler warning if it wasn't obvious enough already) the Reapers take on the look of whomever they are being made from, this is said pretty blantantly in game (end spoiler warning)
4) ME3 is gonig to include earth thanks to Shepards action in ME1 and ME2 causing him to grab the attention of the Reapers by the balls and showing them what the human race is made of.
now maybe if you could stop spoiling the game in a (NO SPOILERS ALLOWED) forum and listen/read the story we could avoid having to write such posts.
oh and Mass Effect 2 wasn't made for "Mass Appeal". Mass Effect 2 only sold around 500k units on 360 on day one according VGChartz. this in comparison to say any other mass market game which sells several million. to put this in perspective, Black Ops sold about 7 million copies day one with 56% of those being on the 360 (also according to VGChartz). Mass Effect 1 sold 400k in the first week (again using VGChartz for consistancy). still wodering where this "Mass Appeal" is at.

But I still prefer ME2 over it because it has superior storytelling and better fleshed out characters.
*When you say story, I assume you're talking about the central plot.

HOWEVER... side quests and gameplay were TERRIBLE.
While ME2's story is lacking, mainly b/c it's focused on recruiting new people and their stories, the side quests and gameplay were far superior.
For me, they sort of equal out. I've played both multiple times... and by multiple I mean 5+ lol
