Better main story: ME1
Better storytelling: ME2
Better sidequests: ME2

This.
No denying ME1's plot is superior, but I find the way it's told, in ME2 to be better. ME2's plot is still quite good and acceptable to me, but it naturally wasn't going to be as good as it's the middle of the trilogy.

ME1 had better story, it felt almost like a movie (more at the end)

It's a little OT, but I find myself in a curious position. In each and every Bioware game so far I strived to be as mean as possible and always choose chaotic evil in the Neverwinter series.

With ME its completely different. A scant few decisions aside, I always walk the Paragon path. And maybe that's the reason I don't like the story of ME2 as much as I liked ME1. In ME2 you're more or less forced into helping a human suprematist society, which, in itself goes against every fibre of my body.

ME1 by a long shot. ME2 is a great game by itself but as a follow up to ME1 it just seems like an attempt to reboot the series while removing a great deal of the science that made ME1 as great science fiction game.

Mass Effect 2 wasn't meant to have a huge story. ME1 was a self contained and wonderful story that introduced you to the Universe and its its main characters. ME2, like most second acts, was about character development and getting the crew into an impossible situation. ME3 will be getting out of the situation. The verdict on ME2's story can't be made until we see the rest of it. People even hated Empire until RotJ came. Criticizing a second act's plot is like criticizing a motorcycle for having two wheels.

Mass Effect was a really good game with a great story.

Mass Effect 2 was a good game without much of a story.

Mass Effect 3 - Combination of both 1 & 2

do i need the DLC to fully appriciate the ME story? as i completed ME1 and im halfway through ME2, but im not on xbox live to get the DLC.

Some stores sell Lair of the Shadow Broker, so if you can pick that up, then you really don't need it.  Other than LOTSB you are missing two characters, a really sweet SMG, some outfits, and a car that somehow is the complete opposite of the Mako and still as crappy.

You are still in a better boat than a PS3 user that has all of the DLC, but no ME1.

ME1, no doubt. If we're considering only storyline.

They're tied for characters, and as for gameplay, that's another win for ME1.

Well which has the better story?

ME1 had surprise, intrigue, mystery.  The game and the story didn't hold your hand as if you're some kind of idiot.

ME2 had a story but every single second the interface, journal would be loaded with spoilers. I never felt surprised in ME2, although I haven't finished it yet.

Mass Effect 1 by far. ME2 was just a bunch of recruitment/loyalty quests that had little impact on the overall narrative.

How is the crew in an "impossible situation"? Despite dying, Shepard's predicament hasn't changed since the ending of Mass Effect.

The Reapers have woken up and began their entrance to the Milky Way. Before, they were all dormant save for Harbinger and Sovereign. Beating thousands of Reapers instead of one seems pretty impossible to me.

I recently started playing ME 1 after playing ME 2 non-stop for almost a year, and I was surprised just how well it still holds up. I'm screwing up quite a bit because I sometimes forget the differences in play mechanics, but it's still good fun. The only real complaint I have about the first is that some of the paragon/renegade conversation options are impossible early on in the Citadel unless you're replaying with a character who's already beaten the game. I must admit that I find myself making an Alien and Aliens comparison to the series in terms of mood and action. So long as ME 3 isn't like Alien 3, I'm sure I'll be enjoying myself at the end of the year. Also, I was more aware of the music setting the mood in the first game, though I have to admit the soundtrack kept me pumped after going through the Omega IV relay in the second game.

ME1 was a great game with an epic story.

ME2 was a sub-par game with a story that was completely unnecessary in the larger scheme of things and full of retcons and plot holes. Also ME2's combat as a whole was worse. A lot worse.

Did Shepard need to run space errands for his space friends for 25 hours in order to find out that the Reapers would be visiting the galaxy as soon as they could? Sure, we didn't see a 5 second video of the Reapers headed toward the galaxy in the first game, but it wasn't necessary. I thought it was pretty clear at the end of Mass Effect that the Reapers would still find a way back.
