Is it shameful to switch to easy?

I love this game, but I'm having a very difficult time with it--especially the random encounters when travelling. Recently, I was travelling from the deserted battlefield back to Denerim (s/p), and encountered a pretty nasty band of darkspawn with a few shrieks and a TON of archers. There must have been 30 of them. How do I get around something like that?

I sat back and had Morrigan cast blizzard and Wynn cast earthquake. The only problem is that they gained so much threat that the archers shot them to death in 5 seconds. When I rush straight in, the same thing happens.

I'm not really having that much fun playing this game for how hard it is to be perfectly honest. I'm currently playing with Allistair, Wynn, Morrigan, and my main which is a dwarf warrior. So, should I switch this to easy mode? Is there shame in that?

Regards,

No, there isn't. I don't find the game especially enjoyable on Normal either... too much like work.

It's nobody's business how you play or how you want to play.YOU bought the game. YOU used real money to pay for it. Soooo if you want to play on easy, play on easy.

As long as you enjoy the game, that's all that really matters. I started on normal and switch to easy if I get bored of wiping several times.

^This.

There are some battles where I've been very overwhealmed & started getting to the point of just getting down right frustrated with the game - switched to easy, got through them, moved on & continued enjoying the game. I've found that switching back & forth keeps the game interesting. By that, I mean switching back to normal after using easy to get past a frustrating battle. That way the little encounters are not too much of a breeze. In the end, it's your game. Only you can see the difficulty. Above all else - you should HAVE FUN.
Playing on any given difficulty should never be more important that enjoying the game.

No shame. I had to do that in a few encounters with my rogue.. now with a more powerful character there's been no need.

No shame at all. I played on normal difficulty up to level 16 before I made the switch to easy. I just came from Demon's Souls on the PS3 before starting Dragon Age: Origins on the PC, needed a break from the hell that game provided.

It's your game of course, play how you feel is best for your enjoyment.

I play on easy, too. It's not because I'm an inexperienced gamer (I've been playing games since Pong was the coolest thing on the block), but because I'm more interested in advancing the story than I am re-trying fights over and over. Maybe once I've finished the story I'll go back and roll again on a harder setting. Until then, I'm very much enjoying what the game has to offer, and especially the story that is unfolding. Happy hunting!

I had to take the easy setting for one particular battle. I tried to get through it load after load after load. I finally gave up for the night and the next morning I took the easy setting to put that specific battle behind me. I went back to normal right afterward.

I had one rouge character that I put close to 20 hours in before I decided to let him fall in battle never to be revived again. I made a different origin and build for a second play through and blew right through the stuff I though was hard on the first guy.

That is two examples of how I dealt with the same issue you are having. Do whatever it takes to have fun. It's your dime after all.

I would try using Wynn for healing only. Morrigan for crowd control. find a choke point and put Alister there with Theaten and shield defense. use your character as DPS on the same enemy as Alister. If that doesn't work do not worry about switching to easy. some battles are harder with different party configurations. I have switched to easy for some battles as well. Play the whole game on easy if you want, Do want makes it most enjoyable for you. FYI this is a difficult game, It took me an hour and a half to win the battle at Redcliff.

No shame at all, just play the game how you want to play it. If anything, it might be best to start on a low difficulty and slowly move your way up as you get a better grasp on how things work.

I wish there wasn't such a drastic difference between Easy and Normal. I find Normal quite difficult at times, but Easy is just... too easy. A LOT easier. It takes the fun out of the game because enemies drop so quickly, but then not being able to kill mobs on Normal isn't particularly fun either..

This is me too - the story is much more interesting than the mechanics for me.  I also don't like to micro-manage stuff.  I'm pretty laid back, and yet nothing goes undone.

I felt bad when I had to for a particular named ogre that would knock me down so consistantly that I could barely act.

When I switched to easy mode he didn't knock me down at all.

I dont want to complain as this is one of the greatest games ever made, however some of the battles with orange characters are not scaled well at all.Orange characters are often too powerfull and have far too many allies with them even though you get no help. Its all do-able on even the hardest difficulty but it is work though and loses a lot of fun. Switch to easy if you want a fun battle that last for about 5 minutes or stay on normal or harder if you want a 45 minute long loading and dying festival.

I started on Nightmare and made it thru the begining and then I did the DLC Warden's Keep and made it to the boss fight and had to turn it down to hard to finish that battle. Then I played on hard for part of the Dalish elf recruiting part. Now i'm on normal trying to finish the Dalish elf part. I dont think I will go down to easy. I actually wish it was something in between normal and hard.

On Nightmare practically every encounter had a good chance to wipe the party. And some of the hardest battles for me was the random traveling battles.

I dont think it's bad to lower the lvl so you can enjoy the game. It just adds more challenge if u decide to play it over again and decide to up the difficulty

no shame, simply a choice. I spend 3 hours on one battle yesterday because i just didn't see the easy solution but i'm very fixated on the tactics part of the game. if you rather concentrate on other part then there's no reason why every battle would have to be as difficult.

I believe difficulty settings shouldn't be switchable during the game, just chosen at the start. Other than that, no shame, really, some people don't like struggling while playing, and others precisely enjoy the thrill of meeting great challenges and even repeating them until they master it.

I do feel a bit of shame, but I tell myself I am still learning the game as I haven't completed it yet. I usually try different tactics and will give a difficult encounter several tries on Normal. Sometimes you don't even have to switch tactics, I had a plan totally explode in my face once but when I tried it again after reloading it worked just fine. However, sometimes I just want the next part of the story and some of the encounters get frustrating so I will switch to Easy so I can continue enjoying the game and not go to bed all pissed about taking out an entire army of werewolves almost singlehandedly and then getting flanked to death by bandits on my way back to camp.

Playing DAO with (any) mages in our team is an even easier game.

We all do it, so no need to feel ashamed playing on "Easy" mode :)

Eh, what's shameful about it? It's a game, not a real battle. The point of a game is to play and have fun, not to get to the point where you want to tear your hair out over a $50 purchase.

I think the game can be hard on easy if you play the game like it's an action game. And you should play, how you want to play. So if your not in the mood for a strategy game, I don't think it is shameful to switch to easy...

I play on easy always. Mostly because I don't want to deal with friendly fire - but also because I'm more interested in the story than in the fighting.
