I'm in this game for the story and the roleplaying. Not the combat.

I play on Easy Mode for that reason.

Maybe next time I'll give it a shot on Nightmare with just me and my dog....who knows?

LOL

Now I understand why there is such a massive difference between playing experiences.  1.0 version Normal Difficult on PC is more like Hard.  Those of you who managed to get 1.1 patch to work and playing on Normal is playing a watered down Normal, and you're having a much easier time of it than people like myself (playing 1.0 on Normal).

Then we have the Console players and who knows how the difficulty plays out with each setting.  Right now there is no standardization between each person's experience.  So I'm seeing people say "Yeah, I beat the game on Normal" when their 'Normal' is my 'Hard' lol.

All I know is you shouldn't have to keep switching difficulty levels in the middle of the game to get past certain spots.  There is definitely a difficulty balancing issue that needs to be resolved.

Then there are those saying "Yeah, this game is easy, I just beat it with an Arcane Warrior"...more LOL

drcloak...there's something else that I've noticed when reading player experiences.

Those that seem to enjoy the combat and like playing on Hard or Nightmare...."beat the game".
Those that seem to enjoy the story and rolepelay prefer to play on Easy or Normal...and "finish the game".

Both are great as long as one enjoys the game :)

Like everyone said, play the game in a way that you get enjoyment out of it.

I have the game for 360 and I'm an experience RPG player but I did my first playthrough on Normal and switched to easy on some fights just because I wanted to experience the overall story. Now that I know the game a bit, I personally also enjoy challenging myself in games, so I've cranked the difficulty to Nightmare. I know that this run through is gonna be a lot more brutal than the last, and I'm prepared for that. And if some battles are WAY too difficult I might go down on hard. But, the enjoyment of this particular run through is really fighting with the game system and figuring out strategies and tactics to defeat each encounter.

To each his own. Like someone else said, YOU paid for the game, YOU play how you want to.

In general, I play games on the easiest setting. I'm not very good at playing games, and my reactions are quite poor, so easy mode is normally quite challenging for me the first time through. If I finish a game on easy, then I might just play through it again on a harder setting as I know what to expect and how things work.
I started DA on Normal, got into the 2nd boss battle, kept dying, so turned it down to easy and got past it first time. I was glad of the option to turn down the difficulty during the game, or I might have given up altogether, as I'm not a fan of having to replay sections.. I'm gonna keep going on easy and see how things progress.

I'm owner of PC version, and I played my first walkthrough on normal difficulty, 100% of the time. I had some very hard moments, with several times party dying completely, but I got past it. And I learned. Now I'm playing 2nd time and on hard difficulty. I'm finding that I have easier time now than back when I played on normal difficulty. It's pretty satisfying!

But I've played every Bioware RPG since Baldurs Gate 1, so I'm no stranger to the game mechanics. If you want to change to easy difficulty, then do so! Games are supposed to be fun! I find it fun to finally get over that hard part I've died so many times to, but my fun is not always your fun.

So I don't see you as any lesser being for switching to easy :)

I play on easy always. Mostly because I don't want to deal with friendly fire - but also because I'm more interested in the story than in the fighting.

Same here, I also play mostly for the story and the experience, not so much for hard gameplay. I don't so much mind friendly fire (I already go out of my way to avoid hitting any party members with the AoE dmg-only spells), but I'm not a particular fan of replaying tough battles or pausing every 2 seconds to micromanage the rest of my party, which is why I prefer to play on easy.

So far a lot of encounters do seem a little too easy, but some of the random encounters and bossfights can be quite tough. The fight with the dragon especially was just on that edge of difficult enough to be exciting, but not difficult enough to become frustrating after the 3rd load game.

So no, there's no shame in playing on easy. It's a game after all, so you're the one deciding what you enjoy. :)

I feel all sorts of shame, personally, when I play any game below Normal. The developers designed the game around Hard difficulty, i.e. thats how it was intended to be played, so I set that as my standard. I finished the game on hard without ever having to switch the difficulty down, and there were a few encounters where I had to reload quite a few times.

Anyway, through some trial and error using a well balanced party (Mine was Wynne, my PC Tank, Leliana, and Oghren) you can overcome any encounter on hard. When you finish that Archdemon on hard without using any ballistas and without summoning your army... well ive felt very few moments as glorious as that in my history of gaming.

I think some kind of sharpening will do the trick! *ponders if Dog would gnaw it into a spike*

I'm currently going through on Normal/Easy as well, switching between the two to get through real difficult bottle-neck battles. Once I've played it through a few times and grasped the leveling, stats, gear combos etc more thoroughly I'll see if moving to a Nightmare/Normal playthrough is just as fun!

I flip between easy and normal, Most often on normal, but when I run out of pots and injury kits, I go down to easy.

Nightmare on pc version. Yes it is. It makes you a baby to play on easy.

Though why you care what others think puzzles me. :D

If you wish to have a no hands on approach to combat, in which you wish to have more action orientated battles with no pause, than I would say go with easy. If you wish to create a more tactical challenge for yourself in a later play through, then up the difficulty to your tolerance level. All in which should be to your enjoyment, as not playing on (or playing on) a certain difficulty is a moot point to others.

Wow, so many people switch? Theres nothing shameful, you have to play it how you want. Though I don't think I could bring myself to do that. For me it would be too much like admiting defeat so I'll die a few times, then try something else and sometimes even backtrack out to camp, heal up, make more grenades and whatnot then give it another shot.

But its just what ever suits you =)

I think it's best to go with whatever difficulty allows you to get through the game while having the most amount of fun. For me that usually means normal. I may wipe occasionally, but for the most part, if I play my cards right, I'll be able to handle what the game throws at me most of the time. Occasionally though, an enemy will just be too much for me, so I'll switch it down to easy. It's good to be challenged, but being stuck on a battle for days is not my idea of fun.

No, there's absolutely no shame in playing the game through on the Casual challenge setting.

What's shameful is someone who finds an exploit or a cheat, and brags about how easy the game is on Nightmare, and rubbishes anyone who struggles on Normal. IMHO.

Aye, this whole idea that Nightmare is too easy because you can pull enemies one at a time from range is a little silly I think.

Play the game as you enjoy it the most, easy or nightmare, doesnt realy matter. Atleast we have the option to change it if we want/need to.

whatever floats ur boat right? :)

I started off on hard and thought the difficulty was perfect, but when I had my party appropriately outfitted and all of my tactical options were opened up I had to put it on Nightmare so that I didn't just walk through everything (of course I've had to reload on a couple of difficult battles but that's how it should be.)

If you're really having trouble with something then IMO you should first reevaluate your strategy and party makeup. Half of the fun is devising a winning strategy and seeing the payoff when you have your whole party alive instead of one man left standing. Honestly, switching to easy would feel like cheating to me. Not that there's anything wrong with that in a single player game, but I feel like it robs yourself of the experience.

No shame at all. You need strategy to beat the game, but there is a huge luck element and you can't really affect that.
