This is a strange question(the way i understand it).

Locust is an anti shield/barrier weapon, and not very effective vs armor.

Mattlock is best used vs armor, and less effective vs shields.

Since these weapons are not in the same class they cannot be compared like that.

So if you need to take out shields/barriers you grab locust and if you need to take out armor you take mattlock.

as an engineer +Locust+Armor piercing (tungsten)= what armor.

Well I think the idea is that its simply inefficient to use 1 weapon for ALL situations, than it would be to use the "better suited" weapons for each individual situation.

Truthfully, I think thats part of what brings up this topic itself (Mattock vs Locust), in that both guns are fantastic guns that can be used in almost all situations, and practically exclusively... hence the reason many who play classes with access to the Locust dont even bother with AR training anymore.

However, you will always end up with better results if you're using each weapon to its strengths rather than trying to mask its weaknesses, for weapon exclusivity.

In truth, I think the simple distiction between the Mattock and the Locust lies in that "If you have access to SMG's and the Locust, then the *need* for the AR is no longer present, and you may take Snipers or Shotguns instead." However, this does not mean that the Mattock isnt slightly superior, it simply means that some playstyles are better maximized by taking other weapon training due to the overlapping nature of the Locust and Mattock.

That'd be the only thing I'd tell people from this whole topic, *IF* you have the Locust available to your character, you do NOT need to get AR training, and can toy around with Shotguns and Snipers if you wish. The Mattock is a fantastic weapon, but you might have a more "complete" arsenal if you were to use the other weapon classes in companion to your Locust.

Don't forget: It's not all about raw damage output. I think it's pretty obvious that the Locust is a far more forgiving weapon than the Mattock. It has loads of ammo too and doesn't require AR training to use.

Thanks to everyone.

And very well said Ares Caesar.

I have been playing with the Mattock and testing guns all this time. The locust indeed allows for more options but the Mattock is stronger and has more range it seems. The locust is no replacement but does allow for you to have something that pretty good. Mattock has some stopping power, enemies react when they are hit (even if they have sheilds). With the locust they just keep moving when getting shot (unless inferno rounds). Mattock you can kill about two enemies before reloading cause each bullet does more damage, with the locust you kill one person, and will have to reload. The locust is a nice gun, I hate the noice it makes though. What were they thinking, sounds like a toy for infants.

I do think its a nice gun to allow other gun options. I wish you could make your own gun choices in this game, it seems to be a big issue in the game. I dont enjoy making different characters and play throughs just for a gun, would be cool to choose your own.

For Soldiers I like the Mattock. For every other class I wouldn't waste my weapon training for it as [IMHO] you have better options. Therefore I go with the Locust for non-soldiers.

I see a lot of people saying that the Locust is terrible against armor, which simply isn't the case. In fact, it's just as effective against armor as it is against shields and barriers. See this chart for specific numbers: www.gamefaqs.com/pc/944906-mass-effect-2/faqs/58941

The Mattock does slightly more damage to armor than it does to shields and barriers, but it's not a big enough difference that you could call it a weakness. The Mattock, properly used, will always do damage more quickly, due to its fast-as-you-can-click rate of fire and high base damage, but in situations with waves of enemies coming at you, it's easy to run yourself out of ammo, and in those situations, the massive ammo capacity of the Locust makes it shine.

Simply put, they are both fantastic weapons, and it's hard to go wrong with either of them.
