I doubt there's any relation. It is just a last name afterall.

Lovely David Gaider has confirmed that there is a relation between the two. He has yet to specify what kind, however.

Hawke's "special" uncle?

It's going to be pretty interesting to see how Roxanne, my female mage, is related to Hawke. It's been said it's nothing earth shattering, so I'm expecting perhaps second cousin or something more distant. Still, it's nice to have more information about the Amell family, as about all we know is that they produce quite a few mages in their bloodline (DA Origins Manual).

I can't wait to find out exactly how they are related, it will make for some interesting role playing. Throw Anders in as a link between them and it's even more so.

I dont think it'll be anything too big, and if Hawkes uncle is the mage wardens father then it'll probably just be alittle line or two saying something (As most lines of dialogue do.)

But overall I think it'll just be one of the many ways the game will make the world seem connected and that our Warden(s) are still relevant to the story.

I hope BioWare does not down-play this cousin thing because this is kind of big but then again they also have to be fair to the other Origins in Dragon Age which is probably why David Gaider said it is nothing earth-shattering.

Yeah, when I first heard about that I decided to make a human mage to import. BUT oh god, mages are so boooooooooring to play. I'm trying so hard lol. So hopefully the few extra lines of dialogue we hear about it in DA2 is worth it! Lol.

It's likely that since the Warden Amell is a mage, and the Amell family are nobles in Kirkwall, that they didn't want a mage child in the Kirkwall Circle. Having a mage child seems like it would be a mark against a family, so the child is essentially exiled both from family and home to a great extent. Likewise, Mother Hawke likely fled because she fell in love with a mage. If I was going to marry an apostate, I wouldn't stay in Kirkwall. I'd run somewhere and stay quiet--to the country considered most backwater, perhaps? None of this is official, but it seems the most likely to me.

Mages can definitely feel slow to develop early on, but by mid to late game they're walking all over everything. My mage turned out to be my favorite Warden, although it had more to do with story and his RP than the actual gameplay...but I had lots of fun with that as well.

Having Flashbacks?

Though I gotta say him being an Uncle is more likely than him being the father...Like maybe his Mothers brother, or his Mother's cousin....

Yeah, I can see how it is fun. Shattering and grease fire are my favorite things to do. But I prefer to be up there swinging my big sword around!

Oh, wow that sounded so wrong.
Also, I'm wondering if our Warden was a dalish elf, if Merrill will talk about them a little in DA2 once we hear the blight was ended. pretty sure Isabella would say something also if we spent time with her at The Pearl.

I think that too.   i was so bored with watching them point their stick, but DA2 seems like your mage is really into the battle,   and why i made a human mage.:P

Dammit, my mage was a circle elf! Hopefully the changes from the import aren't too significant, because there were just way too many possibilities in DA:O. I think I'm going to be using my playthrough with my female human noble rogue who ended up Queen of Ferelden :D So much better than having the human male noble marry Anora, bleh!!

Revka Amell, Leandra's Aunt I believe, is the Mage Warden's mother.

Revka is Leandra's cousin. Seriously, where do people dig up these years-old threads to resurrect?

Amells were going to be viscounts but they had a mage child which was huge scandal in a city like Kirkwall, the mage was sent to Ferelden as a child as it could not stay in Kirkwa;; with such scandal, this caused Amells to not become Viscounts.

The Amell warden does not even know who his parents are and its as intended.
