Hello, just thought I'd add another fix I've stumbled upon accidentally. Apparently this game does not like Soundblaster X-Fi cards. I've removed the card and am using onboard sound at the moment, and I haven't had a crash after 7 hours play. My drivers were up to date. My Soundblaster card was the Soundblaster X-Fi Titanium. Hope this helps some people.
I've had no problems with my X-Fi Extreme. Saying the game doesn't like X-Fi cards is just a poor assumption. There probably is some underlying problem you haven't found yet, but I wouldn't say it's X-Fi cards in general. I'm currently using version 5.10.0.209 and everything works great.
Well good for you. What is true for me, is that once I removed the X-Fi Titanium card, the game has not crashed in about 12 hours play. Doubt if there is any other problem as I have not encountered any kind of problem with other games or applications. Just putting it out there for people to try out.
I've also got an X-Fi Xtreme Gamer with no trouble. Perhaps you could provide us more information (such as which model Titanium it is- PCI or PCIe and which drivers you have) to help us determine if it's a problem with that card model or something more specific... Also if you had both the X-Fi and the on-board sound enabled at the same time it can cause all sorts of issues.

Any update on the issues that ATi 3870 users are having with crashes to the monitor shutting off saying the signal is out of band or the wrong resoltuion?
I'm having the exact same problem... I am at my wits end trying to figure out what the problem is. ATI released a new set of drivers yesterday (11/17) which got my hopes up, but they didn't fix anything.
The funny thing is, I can play the game perfectly fine for as long as I want, looks great and everthing. But as soon as I load my first saved game... bam, complete computer locks up with my screen acting as if i had just turned off my comp. The computer itself will still looks as if it's running, but I have to force the power off via the switch and reboot it completely. This has happened too many times to count now. I've started 3 different new games, eventually get to Ostogar, save and exit the game, and then can't play them anymore.
Any word on this?
ATI 3870
Intel E8400
ASUS P5Q-E (mobo)
Windows 7 64bit
4Gb Ram
I can play all other games fine by the way, Fallout 3, Bioshock, ect.

At first, the game was running great, but after I got Morrigan, I experienced something like lagging. The game run OK, freezes for a half of a second, then it run OK for a minute or two. Then, when I got to a first village, it became worse - the game is unplayable now.
Here is a video (sorry for quality and aspect) of how the game runs on maximum and minimum configuration: Basically the same unplayable condition...
It happens everywhere. Open or closed spaces, doesn't matter if it's only my character on the screen or full party and 20 villagers.
My configuration:
Intel Duo 4400 2.0 overclocked to 2.7 (the processor temperature is 44-50 Celsius, when the game runs)
4 Gb ram
Abit A9 pro
GTS 8800 640 mb
Win 7x64
The game uses both processors. The game is installed on the same drive with OS. The game is updated to 1.01b. I don't have any DLC (Let me finish the main story, please!!!) I tried to reinstall the game. When I open th Task Manager with the game running, I see that it takes up to 800 mb of RAM and 99% of CPU. At the moments, when there is a movement on the screen CPU usage goes to 40-50%
Any help with this or should I buy this game for a second time, this time PS3 version? O_o

I've been following your help on the game for a few weeks now and I figured I'd
see if your not to busy to bounce some ideas off you or anyone else:)
I am having similar problems to a problem that isn't related to your FAQ help
sticky forum and I thought I'd see if it can be added to your faq as it's very
complete about the fixes. The forum where my problem or at least similar
problem as follows:
http://social.biowar...h-199213-1.html
The Black screen o Death is something similar to what has been happening to
me. In regards to having to hard boot it/cold booting it I've had to do
that.. however it hasn't happened instantly like that fellow has had.
It'll happen when I’m playing in game after 2-3+ hours of playing time.
In occurrence to that problem I've had simply game freeze with sound playing in
the background or sound locking up and repeating and there's nothing I can do
but again force it to do a complete hard boot/cold boot. The 100% usage
of both cores for the game has happened to meas well.
You mentioned using core
affinity and I've crashed faster then normal when used. And I used 1
instead of 0 as you mentioned.
Jam442 suggested a method which apparently worked for him as did it work for
one other person who claimed it worked on the forum. It involves under
clocking the card to make it work with no issues of the black screen o death.
However that's all that I've heard about the black screen of death. I'm sure
it has something to do with the game OR it could be I just need to up my
computer. I don't know. I've been reading extensively trying to
avoid being one of the people who run around screaming for help as lord knows
we have enough of those who can't seem to stop and read posts:lol:
On the flip side every time this has happened I've somewhat jury rigged it to
make my own fix.. to my knowledge it's still working. I'm constantly
having to exit the game to clear.... (the memory?) game and once I get a
black screen or screen lockup with sound repeating I simply uninstall it completely
(save my games) and re install it. Now granted people probably would hate
doing that but it has seemed to work for me.
As always I know you like specs of computers here they are.

JironGhrad,
Just wanted to say legendary work on the quad core fix (number 3) I have been following your work since launch of this game and I have had all the issues that everyone else was reporting i.e slow down, crash to desktop, very very long load times. I tried all the usual stuff update drivers including BIOS for the mobo but still the game did not want to run correctly I had all but lost hope until the patch arrived, updated and yes you gussed it the game did not want to run until a visit to the microsoft site to update C++. After all this the game still did not want to work so I left alone and just kept visiting these forums, I saw this sticky and decided I would plunge in and take on the quad core head on and I'm happy to announce all my troubles have melted away and the game runs a dream.
Thanks to you and everyone else who has posted workarounds etc....
For interest I'm running the following
Vista 64 Business (6.0 Build 6002) Service pack 2

AMD Phenom 9500 Quad Core 2.2Ghz

But since the "official" tech forum is no help at all (I don't see anyone moderating it at all)
Here's my compy's related specs:
Windows Vista 32-Bit
2 Crossfired ATI Radeon HD370 512MB Video Cards
4GB RAM
Mostly free (now) hard drive
I'm using the sound system that runs off my ASUS motherboard
As far as I know, the drivers are all up to date (except the video card driver, I rolled that back to CCC 9.7) and I've made sure my registry was cleaned and hard drive defragged and optimized. Currently, it plays perfectly through the human noble origin story, but after that, once I go into the forest to get the stuff for the joining ritual it freezes with the sound looping. At first, it was consistantly right at the beginning of the forest. So I freed up much hard drive space, rolled my video card driver back and it ran past that point, but later in the forest I guess I walked to the wrong area because it froze again and I had to hard reboot my computer once again. All my other games have worked perfectly on high settings. Is this some kind of software problem?

At nearly 50 hours it's unplayable, even after just restarting the game, load times do decrease, but frame rate is horrible. Tried the processor affinity, no effect. Identical (and terrible) performance on both 800x600 minimum settings and 1280x1024 max settings. The core(s) is always at 100%, even at the main menu.
Got the 1.01b patch up and latest drivers for everything.

We recommend patching to 1.01!
Do this if the game won't start after updating to 1.01:
The patch was built with an updated version of the MS VC++ 2005 ATL runtime libraries.
http://www.microsoft...&displaylang=en
scroll down to:
vcredist_x86.exe --> DOWNLOAD ( regardless of whether you are running 32bit or 64bit you need THAT x86 file )
(To confirm you got the right file, you can check the file size; should be approx. 2.61 MB).
You will want to use the x86 version for ALL OS’s!

I am having the same problem with the same video card. I have a duel boot vista32 and xp64 pc and have installed it on both drives. I can play a new character, but right after I load an old save my monitor goes blank and goes to sleep. I try to turn the monitor on and off and it tells me there is no input signal.Bigdumbchimp wrote...

Trouble Shooting steps i've taken:
Changed game and monitor resolution.
Tried on 2 different OSs on 2 different hds.
Uplugged one hard drive to give the PSU more available power.
Updated drivers.
Tried multiple monitors.
I'm seriously considering buying a new video card at this point.

Not me, there is no reason this game shouldn't work on the 3870. EA / Bioware needs to get off their a** and fix this issue.
It's making me consider not ever buying anything from them again how long it's taking them to even ACKNOWLEDGE the issue.
