Keeping your case open doesn't only allow more air to enter but also a nice pile of dust. I wouldn't recommend it. If you buy yourself a case like an Antec P182, you get a nice quiet air cooled case with 3 120mm fans that run near silent on low settings.

I'm afraid I must disagree with this statement. I have 6 systems (3 are in my office in the same area) two are closed and my primary system has the open side.  I have to regularly open the others and dust them out but I see no dust accumulation in the open-sided one. You can get more dust inside but a higher airflow speed will prevent it from accumulating as rapidly.

Depends on the case. The Antec p182 has washable dust filters. It accumulates more dust with the side panel off. A decent enclosures works wonders.

I've got an Antec Sonata (v1) and it's noise level is neglibile, perhaps what you're saying about "a decent enclosure" is that yours isn't? Then again, perhaps where you are is particularly dusty (or like where my in-laws live: they have this black mold that grows inside computers because the air is very humid). My point still stands; an open-side case with a 10-12" box fan provides superior cooling, unless you have an ultra high-end cooling case. For the average user, the box fan will resolve most of the heat issues. Further, telling people that their only recourse is to buy a $180+ case is silly and unhelpful; if they're building from the ground up, then sure, but to correct an existing problem it's a waste of money.

The Antec Sonata is also a decent and very silent enclosure and you also have a dust filter. In this topic he was also presented a watercooling solution. Because of that very reason i presented a decent air cooled enclosure and just like your sonata they cost 100$ +, but this is just a fraction of what watercooling costs. And yes dust accumulation depends on the environment where the pc is placed. If you have pets/smokers running arround you are asking for trouble. A nice enclosure works in any household environment and can be used for your future setups. ATX isn't leaving any time soon.

There are many solutions to a problem. No doubt your open case and box fan works just as well.

Hehe, they added the dust filter in the v2 Sonatas. Water-cooling is usually overkill unless you overclock a lot or happen to live in a very hot place. I like the open-side/fan combo for the low-cost to an end-user plus it will work for all but a very few dekstop systems (Dell low-profile and that god-awful XPS One are both out of luck). For the same reason, since so few users actually build their own machines suggesting that they replace the case becomes a dangerous recommendation. They either end up paying someone to do the hardware transfer, or they try it themselves and risk damaging one or more of their other components.

Jiron, you seem very knowledgable, so i have another question.

i just installed windows 7 and reinstalled dragon age. didnt play much so far, but i noticed my gpu temps have changed from my previous stating. my gpu now idles at around 60c, and when i booted up dragon age and actually to the starting place in the house (city elf, rogue), my temp went to 82c max once. ive never seen it get that high. it stayed at 81c and went down to 80c occasionally. id this caused by win7 perhaps? im not liking my gpu being that high one bit =\\

EDIT: booted it up a second time and turned graphics from very hight o just high. also anti-aliasing is off. this time it would jump around between 75-77. and sometimes jump down to 74 and then back up. but i noticed if i stood still in a conversation or staring at one angle for a while, the temp began to slowly climb back up. it got to 78 and i stopped again. i upgraded in hopes that i could finally play dragon age. and now it appears i wont be able to still =(

A couple things my research has turned up:
The 8600 GTS you're running is the equivalent (clock-speed etc.) of the 7800GTX, the 7900GT, and the Radeon X1800 XT; and a you're running 256mb of GPU RAM (I wasn't able to find a listing for a 512mb unit anywhere, but you may want to check and confirm that for me).  What this means in practical terms is that you're certainly above the minimum requirements for the game, although with Windows 7, you're only barely above them with that GPU.  It's overheating because, simply put, you have the muscle to run it on high, but the video RAM shortage makes the card work harder and thus raises the temperature.

My recommended solution:
You have a couple options here.  You can lower the settings (I'd suggest medium graphics with high textures and AA 2x and see if it still causes artifacts and if so, drop AA and try again, if it still is artifacting then drop the textures to medium also). Or you can get an upgrade.  Another thing to consider though, is that Windows 7 (like Vista) requires more RAM to run reliably and with only 2 gigs of RAM you're pushing it.  So for an optimal experience I'd stick with Windows 7 (did you install the 64bit version?) add another couple gigs of RAM (check the board, you may have to get a pair of 2 gb sticks if you only have 2 slots) and upgrade the GPU to something a little bit beefier (I prefer Radeon myself and you can pick up a 48xx series card on newegg for nearly nothing.)

If you do decide to upgrade your RAM I strongly recommend the HyperX series from Kingston. They have heat spreaders (and I know lots of people think it's a waste) but personally, my overall system temps dropped 8c just by swapping my RAM out (and that's with the HyperX RAM manually clocked in the BIOS).

Hello, just thought I'd add another fix I've stumbled upon accidentally. Apparently this game does not like Soundblaster X-Fi cards. I've removed the card and am using onboard sound at the moment, and I haven't had a crash after 7 hours play. My drivers were up to date. My Soundblaster card was the Soundblaster X-Fi Titanium. Hope this helps some people.

I've had no problems with my X-Fi Extreme. Saying the game doesn't like X-Fi cards is just a poor assumption. There probably is some underlying problem you haven't found yet, but I wouldn't say it's X-Fi cards in general. I'm currently using version 5.10.0.209 and everything works great.

Well good for you. What is true for me, is that once I removed the X-Fi Titanium card, the game has not crashed in about 12 hours play. Doubt if there is any other problem as I have not encountered any kind of problem with other games or applications. Just putting it out there for people to try out.

This isn't all that surprising, really.  Creative had some serious issues with their cards when Vista came out (hence the reason for the Alchemy software).  I'm experiencing crashes and slow-downs at seemingly random intervals, and I've updated the drivers at every level (nVidia GTX 285, X-Fi Extreme, Windows 7 updates (I have the RC version), even an IE 8 update for giggles).

I hadn't read the stuff about setting the processor affinity before this morning, so tonight I'll try taking it down to one core (processor is an i5) and see if that helps.

Hi there.

Before I do anything stupid, is the amd quad core fix dangerous at all? I would love to get the performance boost but I'm rather uneducated when it comes to processors.

My specs:

AMD Phenom 9500 quad 2.2ghz

3 gigs of ram

Vista Service Pack 1

Geforce 8800 gt

Not sure if anyone else is running into this problem or not but figured I would give it an ask. I am having a problem with not being able to access the world map to travel. I though I might have been a corrupted save so I started a totally new game with a new character and have run into it gain. I was able to travel to Lothering from the Witches hut just fine but now after completing all the quests I am unable to leave the area. Before when I ran in to this it was after completing Soldier's Peak, {The Wardens Keep DLC} and returning to my camp.

I have the tool set installed and have messed with it a little but have tried to not screw anything up but from what I read ya never can be sure, any ideas would be very appreciated.

Use the fix for strange issues on page 1.  Also, download and install toolset v1.01 (it will overwrite the existing toolset with no problems). If only I had a quarter for every one of these; I could buy a $5000 gaming rig tomorrow.

I know this is a well-posted problem, but heres my experience:

both cpu cores maxed at 100% during the game

randomly crashes to desktop every 5 minutes on average

have even gotten the blue screen a few times

its not excessive temps because I have been monitoring them

and im not running anything in the background (except fan control)

im using the latest 1.02 patch

max graphics settings with 0x anti-aliasing

this is rediculous; i WANT to play this game now while i have the holidays!!!

please fix it bioware!

System:

Core2Duo 3.0 GHz

nvidia gtx 260 stock

I'm having a similar problem. The game just randomly crashes during cutscenes. I've tried many configurations with drivers, and none have worked so far. My PC is more than capable of running the game on max settings. The game displays no error other than windows saying "Dragon Age: Origins has stopped working" Do you think the processor fix could help at all?

Hopefully someone can help me because Ea Technical support could not on this issue.  When I get to the screen, that I assume is to load or start a new game, there is no writing or explanation for the page.  It is blank except for a box in the middle of the screen that somewhat looks like a shield.  This box has buttons that will take you to other screens and 2 white boxes that you can type info in.  When I click on the buttons it will take me to different screens, but again their is no writing , words or exlanation for what to do next.  These screens are just blank.  Thank you for your help.

So My copy wouldn't launch via the launcher but I can launch just fine straight from the .exe.

Maybe you should add that if you have trouble starting the game to try starting direct from the .exe instead of using the launcher as a workaround :)

Page fault in nonpaged area is a RAM issue.  First thing you should try is vacuuming out your case - I kid you not, I was getting a page fault BSOD every two days for a time, simply because my computer was overheating.

Set processor affinity
Open windows Task Manager. Right click on the Taskbar of your windows vista desktop and select Task Manager or press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Windows Task Manager
Click on the Processes tab
Click on the Show processes from all users button, at the bottom

Here I get lost:

Click the Continue button for UAC prompt
Right click the process (application) whose processor affinity you want to change
Click Set Affinity
Check the CPU(s) that you want the process (application) to run on and click OK

Continue button? UAC prompt?

My game is crashing every 10-15 minutes. But, i am using XP. Does this fix help XP users as well? I went into my task manager, and i do not understand the latter of this post. I don't get an option to continue. Can you point me in the right direction? Thanks.

XP doesn't have UAC... so that part doesn't apply to you :)
