ha ha, well I was thinking it had something to do with the demon hand finisher Bethany seems to possess along with Hawke. We haven't seen any Merrill or Anders gameplay to see if they can do it too, I think.
I'm almost certain the giant hands of doom are what happens if you finish off an enemy with Crushing Prison.
Well, see, I don't see crushing prison being cast here, so I dunno. Of course that's a very early build, and I'm not even sure if she's causing it there. Though there don't seem to be any other mages around.
And if it were a Crushing Prison deathblow that wouldn't rule out it being exclusive to the Hawkes still, necessarily.

[*]Wesley attempts to apprehend Bethany
Oh no he didn't!
I hope Hawke gets the option to *facepalm* at that. You're in the Blightlands, surrounded by darkspawn, and you try to apprehend the first mage you see? Why ****** off the walking piece of artillery when you could befriend it?
There was even the time when Alistair wanted to apprehend Flemeth and Morrigan, even with the Darkspawn closing in.

And now I can't stop thinking about Flemeth's amulet. Since the state of fragility of the Vale on Sundermount she maybe wishes to devolve it further this way to increase her power even further .

Fun fact I'm surprised so many people miss. Those hands aren't demons. They're Hawke's made bigger.Filament wrote...
demon hand finisher
Well, except that Hawke only has such a glove on one hand, as opposed to both, and except that Bethany can apparently do it too, and she doesn't wear those gauntlets herself. I'm aware of the similarity people have pointed out, though it's easier to say "demon hands" when everyone knows what I'm talking about than it is to say "possibly Hawke's hands magnified through a fade portal."

He wasn't trying to apprehend them. He just didn't trust them because they were apostates.

Hm. My Warden already killed those nobles. I wonder if that quest will be skipped when I play.
I'm guessing that its different nobles that were involved in the conspiracy i.e foreign supporters of the guys killed in Awakening.

So, it's probably true then, too many sources now claim basically the same thing. Bethany is just boring. Glad I'll be playing a mage then.
Here I didn't read that Bethany is boring, only that Carver is antagonistic and Bethany is your sister.

Exactly, She has no defining characteristic mentioned any where. She's just 'your sister'. It's the same in every preview/review so far.

Carver is antagonistic because he starts with more rivarly points, he has remarks only because he disagree with you. We don't know if Bethany is antagonistic if you pursue the rivarly path, or if Carver is boring if I try to pursue the friendship path. Still, I prefer to judge myself. A preview stated that Sten was boring. I trust only myself.

That's not really the way it was phrased. I mentioned it because I thought someone might be curious whether they did.
"As the doomed village is overrun by the Blight, Hawke escapes with his antagonistic brother Carver, his sister Bethany, and their mother."
I think they were just adding flavor to the sentence. I don't think they even played as a mage, so his antagonism is probably the only thing that stuck out. They don't really describe Aveline, Varric, or Anders, either, despite spending time with them. They do describe Merrill a bit, despite only spending a little time with her.

What did they say about Merrill?

You're probably right. But at least this way I'll be positively suprised if she turns out to be interesting.
Though as mentioned in the PC gamer UK thread, they did claim the same thing, lack of a personality. We'll see.

I'm assuming they have access to the whole game and have played with both characters long enough to make a qualified assesment of them both though, regardless of how they start out.
At least, thats what I'd do.

That she's awkward, is supposed to be the Keeper's First, but for some reason she won't tell you, chooses to abandon her people and become and outcast, going with Hawke.

It could be. Surely if I have the possibility to play the game I'll try to try all the different paths. I don't know it they have.
But the fact that they didn't express judgement over other companions, with the exception of Merrill, lead me to think that they didn't explore all the game.

We also don't know if your class plays a part in his behavior to you, From Preview in the magazine, it sounds like the author played with a warrior for all we know if we're a mage we have a rivalry with bethany and carver is the boring one.
