this recent blog entry makes me ill, AND THE ONLY CURE IS DA2!!!!!!!!!!!!

man the game looks so cool... it looks like a mix between DAO and DA: Journeys... so what does "offline global illumination renderer" mean? is that basically what there was in DAO? like a pre rendered shadow system that made it look "live"? i always thought that bioware did a great job making a PC game that still had the look of having all the usual PC bells and whistles without putting a hit on lower end systems. and if this will make it look even better im all for it.

so i read the whole blog and i'm not very tech savvy, will there be more interactive lighting? i noticed some emulated god rays in DAO (if thats the right terminology), and in the new DA2 screens i saw what looked like the sun in the background of a cave opening, and it looked very "lively"...

if anyone can explain the tech a little more, i would love to hear/understand more.

cheers.

Yes. Supposedly the quality of renders is improved in DA2.

The lighting does look nicer than Origins.

But some of those textures and just how barren everything looks is rather "meh." Some of the screens look nice and then others look astoundingly bland.

Those screenshots look really nice, so yay for that. On the not so yay side, why the giant, ungainly swords again? I'd much rather they be elegant and well, not clunky and ridiculous looking.

The N64 quality skeletons in the water shot is pretty awful, and the texture work in a lot of places is simply bland and low resolution. I like what some of the art is attempting to do for the style of the game overall, but I feel that way, way too much has been cut back for almost no reason.

Why is everyone calling these screens amazing? *sigh* How our standards have fallen...

They look okay, but there's much better out there. The lighting is nice, but quite a few textures are weak and the environments look so empty.

Isn't Kirkwall supposed to be a bustling city overpopulated with refugees?

I don't really have high standards as far as graphics are concerned. I'm happy with a game looking good, not necessarily great, which, I thought those screens were quite nice. Though as someone above said, those skeletons are hilariously bad.

Yeah, the ribcages are just one big clump.

Not a huge deal in the grand scheme of things, but it just seems like there is a massive discrepancy between the detail on Hawke and the companions and everything else. I like the larger scope of the areas in Kirkwall and all, but they in most of ths screens it just seems eerily deserted. Or conversely, when it was populated like in the livestream, you had the NPCs wandering around like they were lost, just going around like ping pong balls walking into things and bouncing off aimlessly.

Y'know something I have noticed.. where are the specular maps? maybe the shots don't get across the highlights as much as in game but...there seems to be a distinct lack of specularity going on.

Other than that it's alright bit suprised that global illumination is a new addition, nice god rays / crepuscular though I am partial to that myself. Height fog is always a good addition does it have layers to it I wonder?

I liked the skull design from DAO, the new ones look like you can tell there is an image attached to the model.

It's better than origins but mass effect 2 still looks better.

From those screenshots it looks like the environments are more varied than DA:O. Something that was a big problem was they recycled the same levels over and over in DA:O. Hopefully this time around they did a better job with their level building.

I'm worried about thatKirkwall is a city bustling with life. After battling all the oponents in the game the city will be a ghost town :/

Where the hell are the citizens? Its all Denerim again.

I HOPE I'm wrong.

To be frank, the surfaces in general are awful. Is the engine not capable of doing better? I wonder. Was it some kind of compromise...or what?

Edit: Nevermind. I see that's already been answered. Sure looks like him though.

For the most part it looks good, not great, but good.. minus some the sore thumb objects such as the skeletons and some poor textures.

But comparing pics of this to the The Witcher 2 makes me really see the dated nature of this engine and the decision to be multiplatform.. That is speaking from a purely graphical perspective..

Very nice. As long as it actually does look the same on 360. :?

I can live without the jingly keys DX11 nonsense, but there's a limit. One that DAO 360 was far beyond.

Kudos to the devs, though. Looks like you guys have gone the extra mile. It does look very pretty.
