So I just recently upgraded to a gtx 460 when my old 280 died.

I've noticed, however, that DA seems to have problems with it. I'll be playing just fine then all of a sudden the frame rate will drop to 0 (verified with both fraps and gpu-z). It'll last for 5ish seconds and go back to normal. It might not happen again for a little while or it might happen again a minute later, I can't find a decirnable pattern to it. The odd thing is that when the fps freezes, the music/sound continues on just fine. No stutter, skip, or anything at all.

Drivers are all up to date. I'm running mods but they are the same mods that I had when I was using the 280, which I never experienced this problem with. I put the graphics and resolution on the lowest possible settings and the same problem will still occur. I've recently played through both Fallout: NV and The Witcher and didn't experience the same kind of sudden freezing (both ran fine). It just seems to be DA.

Any ideas? Its an annoying problem.

Could be a few things:

1) You need to update to the latest Nvidia driver, if you haven't already. I think it's 266.58 for your card. If you already had it installed when you swapped cards, consider doing a full uninstall (including using a program like DriverSweeper in safe mode to make sure it's completely cleaned out) and then reinstall 266.58 with the "clean installation" option selected.

2) When your 280 died, something else was mortally wounded hardware-wise. Let's set that possibility aside for the moment, since it's both unpleasant and potentially expensive.

3) Your new card is "factory overclocked" and you have an older CPU. I discovered when I upgraded to a GTS450 that I would get occasional freezes and even some weird polygon issues. DA:O is a very CPU intensive game, and so with a fast card like yours, the CPU becomes a bottleneck in the system. This can be helped by manually turning down the memory clock of your Nvidia card.

Could you post your complete hardware specs and OS information? That also might help.

Finally... mods are mods, which means you've made the decision to alter the game's software in possibly unknown ways. It's really hard to tell, but we can deal with that later, too.

Regards,

RI

Yep, that's the version that I'm using. I probably should have mentioned that after I received the card, I formatted the whole system. So the drivers were installed on a fresh install of Win 7

Well not completly dead, it still worked most of the time. It was randomly getting the "pink screen of death". I got sick of it.

1 Prune background processes and services. Your Pagefile needs the Jenny Craig treatment.

Well, just a small update. Its not the mods. Did a clean install of DA. No mods, no dlc, just the base game. Problem still persists. :pinched: Still can't quite figure out why I can still hear everything thats going on (like a door being kicked in and an arrow being fired) but the picture freezes. Next thing to try is the pagefile thing as per Angband21.

Well the sounds/music from a cutscene will continue when it freezes. During normal gameplay (ie battles) just the music keeps going, everything else stops.

www.blackviper.com

Try that link for a great tutorial and listing of services etc that can be cut out safely from a Win7 installation.

Yep, that's the site I used. Got the page file to more than half the size it was. Still periodically locks up. Not sure what else to do. I'm just hoping I don't have any problems with DA2 since it uses a large majority of the same engine (at least from what I've read).

was there any reduction in lock ups?

If so, then try reducing resolution a bit.

Nope, didn't help. I've been running through the human noble origin when I'm testing stuff out. I'm averaging about 3 freezes per run, regardless of what I do. Like I said earlier, I can't seem to reliably reproduce them either. They seem to happen more often in combat but have happened a few times out of combat.

Question... are you using a mage in your party, and does the mage have a lot of sustainables in use?

Not during my test runs of the human noble origin. There is only the warden (either a rogue or a warrior), the dog, and your mother. No mages at all. No sustainables in any form in use from anyone at all actually.

Puzzling why it's freezing, right? I've tried everything I could think of.

My thought at the moment would be that the card is bad except for the fact other games work fine (The Witcher, Fallout: New Vegas, WoW, LotRO).

You've got me stumped. The card is more than enough for the game, and if it works for the others you mention, I would doubt it is the card. I have noticed that the posters who complain about freezes and CTDs tend to be running Win 7 64bit. I am beginning to believe that there is a problem with DA and the 64 bit OS.

I ran into some problems this week while tinkering with my video setup. Found the solution was to do a full clean uninstall and reinstall of the Nvidia driver. I suggested it in another post:

i have the same problem now too. it's odd i just bought the same video card as well gtx 460 SE and i have the exact same lag issue, i guess it's the card or something, it just don't like the game is all lol. becuase DA2 runs perfect so does every other game.
