I cannot get the main character to speak any dialogue lines selected. All the followers and others speak. There seems to be no other sound problems with the game.Posted Image

Main character isn't voiced and therefore cannot speak.

the downside (to some) of multiple character possibilities is that an insane amount of time and resources would be needed to provide full voice acting for all the possibilities. even if you just had one voice for each race/gender combination that's six different voice actors for the character who inevitably has much more dialogue than any other in the whole game

for Mass Effect and Dragon Age 2 it's not so bad, they only need two voice actors (Shep and Hawke having only a gender option) and for older RPGs where only a few select lines of dialogue would be voiced it wasn't too much hassle, but for Dragon Age: Origins? simply not viable

You don't have a sound problem so don't worry LoL.

The game simply has a silent protagonist.

This must be a bug. Does Bioware know about this? I demand a patch!

I played through 2 first, buddy of mine warned me to Skip DAO, but I got suckered in by that "Ultimate" sale and I see what he meant, Finding out this character has no voice does not speak well for the rest of the story I fear. Why have us pick a voice for the character in the first place ?
It's these kinds of decisions that can make a world of difference, oh well you got my money and thats all that obviously matters, nice job.

The selected voice is for battle cries and occasional remarks while exploration only. The warden is not voiced. The game itself is pretty fun. I'd say you should try to sink some time into the game, may be you'd start loving it. I do understand that going back from DA2, some people may miss a voiced protagonist. But as a whole, the game itself is a masterpiece in my opinion, and the ultimate edition is quite a bargain, like the Orange box.

You may find you're able to immerse yourself in the storyline even better: the only PC voice you hear is the one in your head.
But in the end it's what you as the player put into it... its a very fine game and can be a very rewarding experience.

Curious that he told you to skip DA:O and jump into DA2, when DA:O is widely considered to be the better game. By quite a bit. Yes the pace of combat is considerably less frenetic and the warden is voiceless (a state I personally prefer, btw, but the fans seemed a bit 50/50 on that), but the game is wonderfully immersive to a degree the sequel painfully lacked.

Bottom line, give DA:O a chance. Voiced or not, There's a lot in it to enjoy.

Sometimes I just read the lines out loud.. minor issue considering how good the game is.

As do I.

I actually prefer the silent protagonist in Origins case. It lets me create a unique voice fr each character
It's a bit weird, yeah, But whatever.

As was pointed out before in this thread, the available choises of race and gender make voicing the main character pretty difficult. You'd have to have six different voice actors, one for each race, and one for each gender within a race.

Having just one voice actor per gender, like in DA2, would make for some very ill-fitting voices for many of the character options.

The amount of dialogue the protagonist has in this game would have meant a huge amount of work to get the 6 sets of voice acting into the game.

For me, I'd rather take the beautifully done origin stories, and the ability to play any one of the three races, over fewer options and a single origin story, with a voiced main character. I've been playing cRPGs since the late 80's, and voiced characters (any characters) haven't even been around for that long. They certainly are not necessary for the enjoyment of a game, or a story.

It may take a little getting used to if you are used to a voiced pc, but don't let it detract from the joy of the story, and a game that is ultimately much better than DA2, even without a voiced PC.
