Okay, I am playing ToSC for the first time and I just wanted to say that Durlag's Tower is made of awesome. Every level is different and you never know what to expect. I am on the level with that gigantic dragon skeleton, feeling grateful that I only have to fight a few wyverns and not that big beastie.
I'm reloading a lot though. Being pretty clueless about party balance, I didn't do so hot at it and now I'm near the end of BG/ToSC with only half a thief (Coran) and half a mage (Quayle).
My party is heavy on archers and divine magic; this worked great for most of the game but here I am in the depths of Durlag's with hardly any arcane spells left. Thank goodness for wands.
Durlag's Tower is awesome

The supposedly cunning puzzles of the first level down aren't exactly intellectually rigorous, but even those lend the full adventure a character that is rare in games and reminds me of the intense feeling I had reading through some of the earlier DnD modules. Durlag's Tower is the definitely the best area of BG1. Hopefully you read the Durlag story well as you descended... Good luck! Coran can be very useful, by the way...jaime_sama wrote...

Didn't mean to disrespect Coran! He is coping great with all of these traps, chugging Potions of Perception, but that's fine.

Don't hesitate to post if you seemingly "hit the wall". Just went (again) through THE TOWER and should remember sthing about it.

Thank you, FreakyBigGuy, I had some trouble with the Demon Knight but eventually took him down through a combination of luck and lots of potions. I was almost out of magic arrows or else it might have been easier.
Next I'm off to Ulgoth's Beard with this dagger thing, and I understand more fun is awaiting my party there...

Did you go back to Ulgoth's Beard and face up to Aec Letec? Dang, I made it all the way through the tower and now this guy is making mincemeat out of my party. I can't memorize enough Dispel Magics to keep up with how often he Death Gazes my guys into ghasts. I can keep him busy for a while with a wall of summoned monsters and skeletons, but I can't actually finish him.
I read a recommendation to use Otiluke's Sphere to hold him, but it is too high a level for my mage to learn. *sigh* Anyway, as soon as I let him out to start beating on him, he'll be free to Death Gaze us again...

Hey,
There's This Thread about how to kill Aec'Letec on the mainpage - I think you will find a nice amount of tactics for him there
edit: My usual tactic is: Lots of buffs including potions of mirrored eyes and haste, ignoring Aec and killing all the Cultists as fast as possible and using Death Cloud.
Your level, however, seems to be a little bit low for this fight - still, with enough buff potions it might be possible - but you might want to level up a bit before you attack him.

My only mage is fricken' Quayle (multiclass) which probably doesn't help.
Thanks for pointing me towards that thread; how did I miss it? I was blinded by frustration...

I finally beat him with a fairly cheesy tactic. Ran upstairs to rest and heal, then decided, while we're up here... I took a walk over to Sorcerous Sundries and stocked up on fancy arrows. The Arrows of Biting seemed to work well on him.
Only problem was that I took so long before getting back to him that all the loot had disappeared, so I don't know what that wizard was carrying, or the cultists, and I also lost all the items dropped by Ajantis when he died. Dammit, there went that "bonus vs. shapeshifters" sword...
But I was so glad the fight was finally over that I didn't have the heart to start it over again just to rescue that sword from oblivion... Only one party member dead, and he was resurrectable, so I decided that was an acceptable outcome.

I had done everything else up to that point and used very cheese tactic.
Archers took 3 first cultists and three Cloudkills took the rest (Aec'Letec twice) while I sharpened my sword and sayeth couple prayers against boredom

I think that Aec'Letec is the toughest battle in the entire saga (although I've never played the modded game and in Watcher's Keep there's apparently a very tough fight that you could avoid). I did it in the end by massive use of wands of summoning, using Imoen and Khalid to take out the priests whilst my Paladin, Minsc, Jaheira and Dynaheir hit the demon from a distance. Still took about a dozen reloads. Dynaheir gets a couple of Cloudkills at best and Aec'Lectec seemed to have pretty high MR so I'm surprised that they were so successful.

I think the last part where u are attacked by a massive deuregar(cant spell it) party... gosh that was hard. Took 6 reloads to get it... using cloudkill and dispel magic helped a bit.

It's not something that's resolved in a patch. Reload to an earlier save and prevent resting in an area where the doppelgangers appeared. That's the usual cause for getting stuck.
Still, it's good to have your game patched, but be aware that you only need the patch for the old disc versions, such as the 4-in-1 box. The gog-com downloadable version comes already patched. Don't know about the D&D anthology and Gamersgate versions though.
Patches are found on Sorceror's Place. You only need the TOTSC patch, not the Direct X bug patch. Make sure you pick the right region.
