For a bustling capital city overpopulated with desperate refugees... Kirkwall is surprisingly empty.

In the live demo, we can there's barely anyone walking around and those that are seem to be walking in short, jagged paths. You could look down an entire road and not see more than 4 people. These city enviroments look pretty expansive, with wide open streets and big plazas, but there's nothing filling these spaces...

Ugh... that's a shame. That's always bothered me. I was hoping the devs would take a note from the Witcher, where people walked around and even did cool things like take cover when it rained.

We saw an early snippet of the game and your judging the whole city of Kirkwall over a decade with that? Really?

Do you think it's likely to change? We've seen several screens backing this point up, as well.

You really expect the crowd population to change?

Yes, I suppose it should be packed with moving people and things, like Manhattan, or Hong Kong, But then our video cards would have to foot the bill for this "reality". I don't want to experience lag and choppiness and slowdowns in a place where we'll be spending 90% of our time in. Do you?

That said, I just watched the live stream again. it did kinda look empty. at least the streets did. I suspect most of the people will be indoors. Or on street corners. I prefer it that way, personally. I hate rush hour.

I dunno, I have my doubts. The cities in bioware games tend to be pretty darn lifeless.

It may or may not be a lively city. Too early to make this judgment in my opinion.

Really? Athkatla was one of the most living cities I've ever visited in a game.

Probably to cut back on lag IDK.

I'm sure there'll be mods to rectify this if you want it a bit more populated.

This is my concern too. If most of the adventure is taking place in Kirkwall then it's important that the city feels alive for immersion and so far it has looked pretty but like a neutron bomb has gone off. Let us hope that is not part of the story

I doubt it. Bioware has never been good at making cities or hubs look like natural living spaces in the way that most other RPG developers can. The areas are usually pretty barren, and the NPCs either stand around like statues or wobble around awkward paths. Not a surprise to see the same in DA2.

They're going to add a lot more NPCs in the day one patch. Have faith.

I don’t really want to spend 90% of my time in a lifeless city which completely takes me out of the story, do you?
Well I’ve had my turn, let’s keep it going people. Who’ll be next to pose a condescending rhetorical question? Posted Image

Bioware doesn't know how to do realistic cities. They are however very good at stagnant NPCs and jagged walking patterns. Also from what I've read we're going to spending a good chunk of the game in Kirkwall, you'd have thought they'd make life like.

This is supposed to be sarcasm, right? The "Have faith" part threw me off.

I quote myself from an earlier, similar topic:

Yeah, from what I could gather from the livechat, I'm not very impressed. My guess would be that what we saw was an earlier build were few NPCs, apart from the quest givers, had been put into the game. Hopefully when the streets are more crowded the awkward walking will be less noticeable.

Hopefully.

They can't exactly do that there are hardware and software restrictions to get the 30FPS. I honestly can't remember a game that had a city that was actually full of people. Hmmm

I'm surprized it did.  And here I thought you've already played the game,  and been through  enough of the city (both day and night) to form  the  educated conclusion that appears in your OP.

I realize the, but Kirkwall is so barren it's silly.

Who is the next person to leap to conclusions based on nothing and makes themselves look like an arse?

The OP and Sigar were 1 and 2 who wants the bronze?

Well this blows. One of the major criticisms I had of DAO was that Denerim was so lifeless.

A major city with a noticeable lack of inhabitants can really impact immersion. As someone noted earlier, this one was one of the strong points of the Witcher. The towns, cities and villages were realistically populated, which made the setting more believable.

I'm thinking the reason for Bioware doing this again, is because the engine isn't very efficient. As a PC gamer, I've played many games, and DAO was one of the most CPU and memory taxing games I've ever played.

With a texture mod, the game would routinely use up to 1.7gb of memory, and up to 45% of my Core i7 which is overclocked to 4.2ghz.

Now granted thats with a texture mod, but thats a LOT more than what Crysis uses, and DAO doesn't look anywhere near as good as Crysis texture mod or not...
