I'm actually surprised [Garrus] outdid Thane, TBO.

Usually polls like that have a 3% margin of error; we cannot conclude that Garrus is more popular than Thane.

Anyone who was dumb at the game and did paragon everything would obviously get Miranda but default soooo ya...Tali all the way!

How late in the game you pick Thane up probably counts against him.

on a personal level - Thane was overdone. I love it that people hate Kaidan because he's "Carth" when in reality, Thane is Carth without Carth's morality or sense of humor, and Kaidan just has Carth's voice. Dead wife? check. Feeling responsible for her death? check. Lost Son? check. must help find aforementioned son and turn him away from the self-destructive path he's on? check. and as an added bonus?  he has a terminal desease, that he refuses available treatment for (does he feel that he doesn't deserve the transplant?  or is it something else?  we're not sure)

Carth unlike Thane, had a lot of funny comments and his moral compass was not as fluid (my soul is not responsible for what my body is ordered to do - really? really?)

now, don't get me wrong, I don't hate Thane. he's an interesting character, He's visually well designed, his voice acting is top notch and its fun to find out more about his species and Hanar. but as a romantic interest? only for women who like men with some heavy baggage. And possibly women who think - oooh, hot alien with hot voice who has a pet name for my character, and ignore everything else.

/hides away from Thane's fans.

I don't deny that sex sells and it's not necessarily a bad thing. It's just so blatant with Miranda.

Okay she can keep the jumpsuit but can we get back to (stylized) armor during missions?

I mean Samara could get futuristic blood dragon styled samurai armor.

Miranda was pretty much advertised as the main romance in the game. Her clothing, the fact she is in all advertising, her ass shots when she talks.

I am not saying that this is the only reason people like her as I am sure a lot of the fans have many reasons, but she would naturally be the most common choice, especially for people new to the series.

It is also impossible to romance Samara as she rejects you? and Kelly as she doesn't "count"?

I'm quite surprised that Miranda came out on top actually, even in a poll conducted by one site. It was public after all. I've always thought she's a lot more popular than the forums here indicate, but I don't think she really outclasses Tali by that much.

Though if she does, I don't think that "sex sells" has as much to do with it as the fact that she's human. Tali has a lot of sex appeal as well, though it's not as blatant as with Miranda, and has a far more immediately likeable personality.

At least I do hope it's not the "sex sells" angle, for then we can hope to see Miranda in a less ridiculous outfit in ME3. At least we now have the armor....

I wish Bioware would release some relevant statistics, but only after ME3 is out or it will lead to another round of LI wars.

some people say that the results are due to mostly male players however on a poll on this forum i saw that about 40% of ME players are actually female which is nice to see the old sterotype of gamers fading.

As I recall, the official maleShep to femShep ration is about 4:1 (80%/20%). That's also very close to the ratio of male to female players which came out of XX55XX's character poll a year ago or so, based on about 850 entries.

That would mean that women are overrepresented in the forums but underrepresented in the quoted poll as suspected, if you take the given LI results as roughly representative of male and female players.

Not necessarily. I'm a female gamer but I only played one female Shepard compared to my 8+ male Sheps. I'm sure there are cases of the reverse as well.

That statistic has never been clarified. It simply says that 80% of players have played as a male shepard. That doesn't preclude playing as a femshep as well, so we can't conclude the maleshep:femshep ratio.

Just goes to show you that a very small percentage of players actually post in these forums. ME2 sold over 2 million copies, I am guessing there are only about 1000 active posters in these forums...if that.

Man i'm glad someone finally said this. It's strange that just because Kaidan has the same VA as Carth and isn't acting like Zaeed. He instantly get's deemed an emo and a carth clone. While the character that's precisely like Carth, get's a pass because he's a "cool alien".

The Talimancers and Drell Lickers are loud sections of the population that post on the BSN.

Wow. I love that we are actually known as Drellickers now Posted Image.
However, Garrus is my predominant romance, and given that obviously, the female players are substantially less that male players, 3% is a BIG difference.
I too, thought that Thane would have a lot more popularity than Garrus. In fact, when I did my first playthrough (before I joined BSN) I was like
'What the hell? I must be the only person to be going for Garrus over Thane and Jacob.'
But this and the forum proved me wrong Posted Image.
Also, I expected Miranda to have a big majority. In proportion to everyone who has played ME2, the 'hardcore' players who have multiple playthroughs will have likely gone for those in ME1 (Garrus and Tali) or had multiple playthroughs for different romances.
On the other hand, the 'casual' players will have made the bulk of these statistics, and it makes sense that they would go for the obvious choice, and the eye candy of course.
But still, Garrus over Thane? I didn't know he was such a popular LI. But I am pleasantly surprised, of course Posted Image.

@OP  My thoughts on the poll: the only fairly accurate results can come from Bioware

@jeweledleah Disclaimer: this is not an attack on either character or those who like them.  I think the only thing that keeps Carth = Thane (and thus not getting on my nerves) is Thane never goes on about how he cannot trust the pc or anyone ever again.  Thane has baggage, but it never affects the team or the mission.

I appreciate both as characters, but if I had to be stuck on a desert island with one, I'll take the one who quietly helps the group over the one who will eventually help after much convincing and attitude.

@LadyJaneGrey, oh I understand and to be honest - all three characters have their differences and their pluses and minuses. mostly I was just trying to say that Thane is a lot more similar to Carth then Kaidan, but people seem to latch on to one thing (in this case - voice over actor) and make up their mind about the character based on that alone.

amusingly enough - I actually like Carth. He's loudmouthed, argumentative, opinionated and sarcastic. he's not an easy person, but he's an interesting one IMO. He's not someone I would chose at a first glance, but I think he's the kind of character that you either grow to hate or love.

Thane, well - he definitely has a lot of positive features and I wouldn't be horrified to be stuck with him on a desert island, but I still wouldn't find him attractive as an LI material. his baggage doesn't affect the mission, but it sure casts shadows over personal relationship. especially his drell perfect memory recall thing. just personal opinion :)

@jeweledleah I'm with you on the Thane/Carth over Carth/Kaidan; I don't really understand how some people cannot differentiate between Carth and Kaidan.

Oh, and I was thinking desert island as in "cannot escape the person, let's work together" more than "who would I want to snog." ;^)

I'd take Miranda either way. I figure she'd be so buoyant I wouldn't even need to build a raft.

Carth and Kaidan are humans though, and by extension they're boring because of it.

I can't comment on Carth, but it also has to do with Kaidan being... well... boring.  Ashley has a great character and she's a human.  Kaidan is pretty much just there to get some backstory on human biotics and to have a neutral squadmate.

you know, you guys should really try to talk to Kaidan more often and bring him along to some missions. some of his quips rival Garrus's, he's just more subtle (and less snippy for the most part) then Ashley. Took me most of the game to learn to like Ashley, some of her comments can be downright vicious for no visible reason.

And while Ash's pure combat abilities are great, she's the most inflexible team mate in ME1. take Kaidan along and you can bring anyone else, the choice is yours. with Ash, unless your Shepard is Infiltrator/engineer, you cannot bring Liara or Wrex and keep Ash on your squad, not if you still want to open any lockers/boxes. she has no crowd control, giving her first aid is kinda waste of points - she just shoots things real good. I stopped taking her on ground missions as soon as I got "soldier ally" (and there were several moments in that playthrough where I almost reconsidered going for that achievement).

@jeweledleah: Yep. I have learned to appreciate both of them (my God, Kaidan is wonderfully useful). Even though I still like Garrus and Wrex better. I mean, seriously, you just can't compete with those two.

oh, Garrus and Wrex are full of win. pure unadulterated win. I have a feeling that if Wrex was available as LI, he'd beat out Thane too :P by a large margin. I think he'd be tied with Garrus, at least. I prefer to bring Wrex/Garrus when I'm playing either Vanguard or Adept. its..just... beautiful.
